Resident Evil 4 (2023)

In 2004, Ashley Graham, the U.S. president’s daughter, is abducted and located in Valdelobos, a remote mountainous village in Spain. Leon Kennedy is assigned the rescue operation and encounters Luis that day upon searching the village for Ashley. Luis is scheduled to be killed by the villagers, though Leon saves him not before becoming infected with the Las Plagas parasite by Bitores Méndez, the chief of the village.

Sometime later, Leon and Luis wake up chained together. They work together to free themselves and make small talk. Luis askes Leon if he’s looking for someone, a “missing senorita”. Luis reveals the “senorita” was last seen being taken to an old church. Both men manage to free themselves, with Luis getting away first, leaving Leon alone. Leon radios Ingrid Hunnigan, his agency’s support operative, and asks her to run a background check on Luis. Hunnigan gets back to him, revealing Luis used to be a researcher for Umbrella.

As evening falls, Leon finally enters the church Luis had told him about. Inside, he locates Ashley and the two make a plan of escape, however they are cornered as they watch a horde of infected villagers come up the path to the church after they have a vision of Osmund Saddler, the cult leader of Los Iluminados, commanding the villagers to “deliver them to salvation”. With the threat approaching, Leon and Ashley escape the church by jumping out a window. As Leon is fending off their pursuers, they’re spotted by Luis, who calls them over to a building he’s taking refuge in. Once inside, Luis turns to Ashley, exclaiming how Leon “found his missing senorita”. Ashley reveals her name and so does Luis, the two officially meeting. Leon begins to question who Luis is, however with the threat of the villagers, he and Luis become allies for their and Ashley’s survival.

The battle seems never ending, until Ashley yells for Leon to follow her. As she runs away, Luis follows, with Leon behind him. Together all three cross a drawbridge and are able to catch their breath. Ashley begins to cough up blood, and that’s when Luis explains what’s happening. He informs them they’re infected with the Las Plagas parasite, however “lucky” for them, they’re still in the early stages. Luis opens his shirt, revealing a long scar across his chest, with Leon and Ashley learning he was once infected himself. They’ll need the right surgical equipment when Luis proclaims he has a plan, though they’ll need to trust him. Leon and Ashley exchange a look and Leon nods. Luis is delighted they’re officially partners. As Luis begins to walk way, Leon questions why he’s helping them, with Luis responding “it makes him feel better”.

Sometime later, Leon and Ashley enter Salazar Castle, where Luis makes contact with Leon via radio. He tells Leon to meet him in the courtyard to offer he and Ashley suppressants that can help slow down the progression of Las Plagas. Eventually, Leon reaches the mines beneath the castle, having gotten separated from Ashley either in the night. He sees Luis standing by with the suppressants, having witnessed Leon’s symptoms worsen. Leon injects the suppressants and begins to feel better. Luis informs him the feeling will wear off soon, asking him if he’s “ready to go,” presumably to go get the operation to remove the parasite. Leon declines and claims how Ashley is the priority. They partner up and Leon again questions why Luis is helping them, letting Luis know he knows he used to work for Umbrella. Luis is mildly disheartened Leon knows of his past, though tells him he wants to feel good about himself and make amends.

Leon and Luis arrive closer to the surface, where they exit a lift when Luis is suddenly knifed in the back by Jack Krauser, Leon’s former Major. Luis falls to the ground and Leon and Krauser engage in a knife battle. Leon is losing the fight when Luis manages to shoot Krauser’s knife away, saving him. Krauser leaves the area and Leon rushes to Luis’s side, slumped against some crates. Blood runs down Luis’s mouth as he tells Leon to take the key to his laboratory where he and Ashley can get the operation to remove the parasite from their bodies. Luis dies shortly after.

Following Leon killing Ramón Salazar, the castellan of Salazar Castle, he spots Krauser driving a boat to a nearby island with Ashley in the back. With help from Ada Wong, he arrives to the island as well. Navigating through the island, Leon finds Ashley unconscious in a secured room. Upon obtaining a key card, he unlocks the room and then cuts through the binds holding Ashley. He notices her worsening symptoms and injects her with the suppressants given to him by Luis. Immediately her symptoms clear for the time being. As he waits for her to wake up, he begins to feel his own symptoms resurface, the suppressant he took earlier wearing off.

Ashley wakes up and she thanks Leon for getting her the suppressants in time. Ashley questions where Luis is, with Leon telling her “he was worried about her until the end”. As Leon helps Ashley stand up, they hold hands for a moment as Ashley says, “For Luis.”

With more help from Ada, Leon and Ashley are able to locate Luis’s laboratory at the summit of the island. Ashley gets the parasite removed first, followed by Leon. Both operations are successful and they’re no longer under the control of Saddler. Feeling better, they acknowledge they owe Luis for saving their lives and together they make their way to the exit, killing Saddler and returning Ashley safely home.

Luis – “Not looking good, eh, my friend. And such a loss to the ladies of the world.”

Leon – “Don’t talk.”

Luis – “Take this. The key to my laboratory. Go there… and remove those damn… parasites. Help… Ashley. You know, I lead a pretty shitty life. But now, eh… what do you think, Leon? People can change, right?”

Ashley – “For Luis.”

Fanon

Luishley is a small ship within the Resident Evil fandom. During Resident Evil 4 (2005), the ship had an incredibly small following, which lasted until 2023, the release of the Resident Evil 4 remake. With the remake, Luishley has regained interest from both new and older members of the fandom.

Luis and Ashley are primarily shipped along with Leon Kennedy, as you’ll always find him featured in Luishley works. Fan works most often take place during the main game or feature the everybody lives and fix-it au tropes and take place following the game due to Luis’ death.
