Season 2[]

MADMAX

While at the arcade, Dustin is frustrated that he lost his high score. Will is surprised that the new high score was 751,300, and Mike says it impossible for anyone to reach that. Dustin asks Keith who is 'MADMAX', and Keith responds that they are better than Dustin, resulting in him pulling a middle finger in response to what Keith had said. The next day, at school, Mr. Clarke introduces a new student, Maxine, but she corrects him and says to call her Max. After she makes her introduction, Dustin, Lucas, Mike and Will stare at her as she goes to sit in the back of the class. A while after that, Mike says that there is no possible way she is MADMAX. Will agrees to this, and says girls don't play video games, and Mike responds that even if they did they can't get 750,000 points on Dig Dug. Lucas disagrees on what Mike and Will previously said, saying in spite of that, her name is Max. Lucas then asks Mike how much Maxes he knows, and Mike responds with I don't know, and Lucas believes he knows zero. Dustin agrees, stating she showed up at school the day after someone broke his high score, and Lucas responds that she has got to be MADMAX. Dustin comments on how she skateboards, claiming she's pretty awesome because of that fact. Max walks out of their sight, and throws a paper ball in the trash. The boys start running to the trash can, and Dustin digs in deep to the trash, while the other three wave casually to a group of girls staring at them. Dustin straightens the paper, only for the group to find out Max knew the boys were spying on her. In the arcade parking lot, Dustin and Lucas hide behind a vehicle, and Lucas looks into the pair of binoculars and tries looking for Max. Dustin tells Lucas his mom is going to murder him, and Lucas tells him to go home and he will radio him if anything happens. Dustin replies that he just wants him out so Lucas can make his 'move'. While he shows Lucas his brand new front teeth, he notices Max, and signals Lucas. Lucas flips his binoculars, and sees Billy's car heading toward the entrance of the arcade, and Max comes out of the car, indistinctly arguing with her brother. Inside, Max plays Dig Dug, and Lucas and Dustin watch her from a distance, and Lucas says she is incredible. They sit down with smiling faces and find out she is actually MADMAX.

TRICK OR TREAT, FREAK

As Dustin and Lucas open their lockers, they see Max riding past the hallway on her skateboard. Dustin asks if they should do this, and Lucas disagrees, telling him they both look like morons. Dustin says she could possibly be interested in Ghostbusters, and Lucas agrees with this, but responds saying that was not his point, and the point he's talking about was that they were wearing costumes, and she was not. A few moments after Max walked off, Dustin suggested that they'd talk to her after class. After class ended, Max opens her locker, but suddenly Dustin and Lucas appear by her, and introduce themselves. She says she knows, and refers to both of them as 'the stalkers'. Dustin and Lucas look at eachother briefly before Lucas says no and tries to clear up the situation and the both of them make excuses, while stuttering and hesitating. Max asks if that is the reason why they are wearing proton packs, and Dustin replies they don't function, while simultaneously trying to show her he has a 'handy dandy' trap.

Lucas“Hey. You're nothing like your brother, okay? You're cool and different. And you're super smart. And you're, like, totally tubular.”

Max“I disappeared.”
Lucas“No, no, you didn't. I just didn't look hard enough. Okay? But I see you now. I see you.”
— The Dive
Max“But it's my mind. Not his, right? So I should be able to control where I am. I just need to... push him away. Find a happy memory and hide there. Hide in the light.”
Lucas“You got a memory in mind?”
Max“Yeah. It was a time when I was the happiest.”
Lucas“Was I there?”
Max“That's presumptuous of you. But yeah. You might've been there.”

Behind the Scenes[]

“Lucas beams. And so does Max. They are as happy as they have been in a long, long time, and for a moment, they forget about the impending battle...”
— The Piggyback (official script)[1]

Fanon[]

While Lumax did begin in the second season, it did not have the strongest fanbase. The fanbase stayed pretty stagnant during the third season due to the couple not having much focus. However, they gained a larger following after the release of the fourth season where they were not only a major focus but also displayed a more mature side of their relationship. Despite having broken up between the third and fourth seasons, it was clear through their heartfelt interactions that they separated because they were dealing with their personal trauma and not because they did not love each other anymore. Following the fourth season, Lumax went on to become a beloved and fan-favorite couple.

The poly ship "Elumax" is a popular poly ship for fans of both Elmax and Lumax fans and even some Hopclair fans. The poly ship for Elumax mainly is portrayed as just both Eleven/Jane Hopper and Lucas dating Max, but it is also popular for fans to portray Elumax as Lucas, Max and Eleven/Jane Hopper all dating each other.

On AO3, Lumax is the most written ship for both Lucas and Max. It is also the seventh most written ship in the Stranger Things (TV 2016) tag.
