MaeGregg is the friendship between Mae Borowski and Gregg Lee from the Night In The Woods fandom.
Canon[]
Mae and Gregg have been best friends since high school, being partners in crime with Casey. After Mae had to move out of Possum Springs to go to college, Gregg had straightened out and got a real job at the Snack Falcon, giving up his love for Crimes.
Part One: Home Again[]
After Mae dropped out of college and was forced to return to Possum Springs, she was looking forward to seeing her friends again. After getting a good night’s sleep returning home late, her mother told her that Gregg now works at the Snack Falcon, Mae immediately makes her way there. Gregg is excited at seeing Mae again and even more so as Mae confirms that she’s back to stay. After exchanging humorous insults, Gregg begs Mae to come to band practice. After playing a song in a band with Angus and Bea, Gregg praises Mae’s bass playing, regardless of how good she is. They then go out to eat bad pizza at the Clik Clak Diner, but find a severed arm at their way out.
The next day, Mae is looking for Angus to fix her computer, but couldn’t find him, so she asks Gregg. He tells her that he’s working at the Video Outpost “Too”, but Mae couldn’t find him there. After a conversation about the severed arm, Gregg offhandedly mentions that he and Angus only live two doors away from it, giving Mae a clue on where she could find him. He also reminds her how happy he is that she’s back, but declines the offer of a hangout since his parents have invited him over for dinner. After her computer is fixed, Gregg jokes about Mae having broken it with too much “porn” and tells her about a party in the woods.
On the day of the party, Gregg tells her how excited he is that he’s going on a party with Mae and flails his arms so much that they actually tire.
At the party, Gregg and Angus stand together and talk things out with Mae, who is close to freaking out over seeing her ex, Cole, at the party. Gregg and Mae joke about another guy playing guitar, calling him a douchebag playing douchebag songs, but Angus doesn’t get it, saying he likes that song.
After Mae gets a little drunk, Angus promises that they’ll watch over her and Gregg agrees. But after Mae goes fully drunk, they just advise her to sit by the fire, saying that they failed her. But when she does so and her ex tries to talk to her, Mae has a drunken rant about “effing” everything and Gregg is the only witness to cheer her on.
Part Two: Weird Autumn[]
As Mae checks her chats the next day, she sees a message from Gregg, telling her that he hopes that she’s doing okay and to come by at the Snack Falcon later. He also tells her that he’s happy about the band practice that day. If Mae visits Gregg at the Snack Falcon, he asks her how she’s been feeling. Mae tells that she felt bad before, but hiking across town helped. Mae then decides to go to band practice with Gregg.
After band practice, Mae asks Gregg what he had planned for the night with Angus going to visit family, he tells her that he was planning to do “Crimes” and offers her to join him. Should she do so, she and Gregg go to the abandoned Food Donkey to break in, but Mae is not thrilled that they are joined by Steve Scriggins. After a session of trying to transport their booty from the Food Donkey, if they fail to transport it up the stairs, Gregg nonchalantly reveals that they could’ve just taken the elevator. As an apology, Gregg takes Mae out to the diner. They then play a game of Mae trying to throw pierogi into Gregg’s mouth. They talk about how they finally get to hang out again and Gregg reveals that he’s planning to move into a more expensive city and that he got a tattoo. He couldn’t afford doing crimes out of fear that he would lose his job and disappoint Angus. Mae tells Gregg that she missed him and he responds by saying that he missed her as well.
The next day, Gregg tells may via chat that he’s still sore from yesterday and that he’s lonely since Angus is still out of town. Should Mae visit Gregg in the Snack Falcon, he asks her to hang out. Should she accept, he takes her to his apartment building. He tells a story of how his grandfather survived a bullet that went through his head, wearing the helmet as proof. He then takes her to an old an abandoned car, so old that it has a tree growing through it and tells her to smash it with a baseball bat. When she asks why, he tells her that “they need the battery”. He laughs when Mae gets electrocuted, but asks her if she’s okay after he sees that she got knocked out for five seconds.
Back in Gregg’s apartment, they assemble a “robot son” using abandoned animatronic parts from the Food Donkey, using the car battery as fuel. When Mae asks Gregg why they did something like this, he says that he missed the “old Gregg” who hung out with Mae and did crimes and dumb shit for fun. Mae seems flattered by it and Gregg allows her to push the button and turn their “son” on. Once Mae gets back home, Gregg asks her if she’s still electric and she touches metal to prove that she isn’t.
Should Mae choose to hang out with Gregg the following day, he will take her on a bike trip to the woods, then they’ll have knife fight, break a tree and goof around with a crossbow. Gregg then takes Mae deeper into the forest to discuss his own insecurities about his relationship with Angus.
At Harfest, Gregg tells Mae that he’s been busy with the rush and Mae says that she can relate, which surprises Gregg as Mae has never mentioned having a job before. He then invites her to smash some light bulbs as an informal hangout. He was also roped into the Harfest play by Bea, but unlike Mae, he wound up having a part with far fewer lines, leaving Mae standing all by herself on stage. Afterwards, Gregg declines Mae joining him and Angus watching horror movies, saying it’s more of a date. (Un)fortunately, leaving her standing has Mae witness a kid being kidnapped by a masked person, which kickstarts the rest of the plot.
Part Three: The Long Fall[]
If Mae checks her messages that day, Gregg apologizes that they couldn’t hang yesterday and says that Angus is sorry too. He also tells her that they have band practice that evening. Should she come to visit Gregg at the Snack Falcon, she’s visibly distressed about what she saw, Gregg asks her about it and she says that she’ll tell him at band practice.
After band practice, Mae tells Gregg and the rest of her friends about what she saw after Harfest. Gregg asks her if she’s okay. Regardless of what she tells them, they all agree to help her track her “ghost” down.
When Mae and Bea come back from the library, they present three options for clues to Gregg and Angus. Gregg offers to take Mae to the Historical Society.
The next day, Mae can run into Gregg’s cousin Jen in the woods behind the church. Jen tells her that Gregg should leave Possum Springs and come to Bright Harbor, Mae disagrees, despite knowing that he’s planning on moving to Bright Harbor anyway.
Should Mae choose to go with Gregg to the Historical Society, Gregg and Mae would crash Gregg’s bike on the way there. When they arrive at the Historical Society, they both compare the building to something from a piece of horror fiction. They end up on a wild goose chase as they accidently locked themselves into the building, trying to find a way to unlock the elevators and escape as they realized that someone followed them. At Mae’s escape, a flash of light confirms that their stalker is Mae’s “ghost”, but they manage to escape in the nick of time. Mae apologizes for having Gregg’s bike crashed, Gregg mauled by an owl and having to escape via fire escape and calls Gregg a good friend. Gregg treats this as no big deal. But Gregg continues to deny that it was a ghost when he and Mae message each other that evening.
If Mae visits Gregg the day after that, she will tell Gregg about the weird nightmare she had where she talked to (a) God. Gregg offers her a free slushie and some chips to cheer her up, but Mae declines. She then has the option to hang out with Gregg again, should she take it, she and Gregg decide to go to Donut Wolf, inviting Angus along. In the car, Mae and Gregg have a contest about how many people they have kissed, with Angus silently driving. But then they get a flat tire. Gregg and Angus fight over it, which causes Angus to snap at Mae while trying to get a word in, only for Gregg to snap at him for yelling at her. When Mae finds a spare tire, Angus openly tells her that he doesn’t trust her with it, which causes both Gregg and Mae to judge him for it. They fix the tire off-screen and go to Donut Wolf. After ordering, Mae lies about having to go the bathroom, where she realizes that she isn’t feeling good and decides to destroy it to blow off steam. Gregg then walks in on her doing so and snaps her out of it. He asks her why she did that, but Mae couldn’t give a straight answer. After they sat down to eat their donuts, Gregg and Angus have an argument while Mae was getting woozy from eating too many. After she puked, all three of them sit it out on the parking lot outside and Gregg asks Mae if she’s okay. When Mae asks if she’s making things weird, Gregg tells her that she doesn’t. He tells her a story about how he let the sheep go at his uncle’s farm, only one survived while the other ones where all run over by trucks. He is saying that he’s trying to mature for Angus’s sake, but Mae is trying to keep him the way he is and pleads her to allow him to change. Mae reminds him of the time they almost burned down the school, Gregg laughs and they find a compromise in that Gregg will come clean, but both will cherish the crime memories forever. She then invites both Gregg and Angus to one last crime: They leave their animatronic son in the woods to scare the kids.
A day further, Mae tells Gregg that she has a splitting headache despite sleeping well. Gregg asks her what he could do about it, regardless of what Mae says, Gregg manages to make her feel a bit better by telling a joke. Should Mae hang out with Germ that day, Mae would ask him why he took her up to his house, where not even Gregg is invited to go. Germ would tell her that Gregg seems like the kind of guy who has it figured out, to which Mae replies “Gregg’s the best!”.
When Mae experiences a bout that she pins on the “ghost” following her, she suggests going into the woods at night after being brought to Gregg and Angus’s place to recover. Angus surprises everyone by saying he’ll go with her and Gregg quickly agrees with him, with Bea saying that she thought the same thing.
All four of them decide to walk into the forest where they discover a cult of cowled figures who are all dressed like Mae’s “ghost”, witnessing one of their members getting punished for leaving the arm in front of the diner, the punishment leaving his bone sticking out. This causes Mae to gasp, which reveals them to the cult, forcing them to run. A gunshot is heard and Mae drops unconscious.
Part Four: The End of Everything[]
If Mae hung out with Gregg more, he will take over as the playable character for a brief time, hoping that she recovers at the hospital. Gregg is overjoyed at seeing her show up at their place against all odds and suggests a pizza party to cheer her up. He also offers her to sleep in his bed, but settles on the couch after she calls that weird. After Mae falls asleep on the couch, Gregg says that he hopes she’s alright. Once Mae wakes up, he asks her if she died. Mae says no, she just took a long nap, which Gregg thinks is nice. Mae is trying to tell them about a dream/vision, Gregg asks her if she can’t eat the pizza she was holding, which she confirms, feeling sick. When Mae goes to talk with Gregg after having a phone call with her mom, Gregg asks her if she’s really ok and admits that he was worried sick. Mae tells him that he was right to worry and she has to promise him to never get seriously injured again. Mae then asks him if they could all go to sleep and Gregg agrees. Finishing the Gregg Route has Mae tell Gregg a story of how she couldn’t enjoy a game she liked anymore since suddenly it looked like “just pixels”, relating this to the incident that gave her the “Killer” nickname. He admits that he was so scared for her and tries to reassure her that she didn’t mean to hurt anyone. Mae still decides to go back to the cultists on her own while all of her friends are asleep.
When Mae confronts the “ghost” that’s been stalking her, she’s suddenly interrupted by a crossbow; Gregg and her other friends came to rescue her. Gregg snaps at her for endangering herself and tells her not to die on her. All of them suggest going after her “ghost”, but Mae tells them that she has to go alone, they all ignore her. When they infiltrate their hideout, Gregg asks Mae if she really wants to do this, Mae tells him that she can’t function if that guy continues to mess with her head. So they go deeper. Once they pass a tunnel, Mae tells her friends that whatever has been messing with her is down there. When they finally catch up with the cult, Gregg tries to intimidate them. When they’re allowed to leave, one of them came back to abduct Mae only for Gregg to hold onto her, with the others using the elevator to mortally wound the cultist. Gregg then tries to calm Mae down while she is laughing about it in a panic. In her speech in messenger, Mae says that she loves Gregg the most, that they’re like “old shoes”. And while she does give Gregg up for Angus, she points out that he was “hers first”.
Should Mae open her messages the next day, Gregg sincerely tells her that her speech was great and calls her in for band practice, feeling that they need to do something “normal” after what happened last night. He also tells her that he hopes she’s doing better.
Epilogue: Stars[]
When Mae visits the Snack Falcon, Gregg tells her that her being alive and well is relevant, which Mae returns. He then asks her if she wants to do band practice. At the end of the Gregg Route, Mae and Gregg are the first ones to show up at band practice and they talk about how cold the weather has gotten. Gregg once again asks her if she’s doing okay and she tells him that she’s still not quite sure. They then talks things out about what happened last night, with Mae lightening the mood about the many good things she did the past two weeks.
Fanon[]
It is out of the question that Mae and Gregg have the best friendship out of all the characters in the game. However, since Gregg is one of the characters Mae interacts with the most, it hasn't stopped people from shipping him with Mae... even though Gregg is gay. Generally speaking, many fans respect Gregg's relationship with Angus, so they wouldn't even think of shipping him with anyone else, even if he liked girls.
Support for the romantic ship does exist, but it is a rarepair at best, many fans of the game can get hostile when they see Gregg or Angus being shipped with anyone but each other, especially when they're being shipped with women.
Regardless, the ship gets tons of platonic support, people just love to imagine what kind of "crimes" they did in high school or what their future is going to look like now that Gregg has turned his back on crime.
