Maesey is the het ship between Mae Borowski and Casey Hartley from the Night In The Woods fandom.

Canon[]

Mae and Casey had been friends since childhood. They formed some kind of delinquent trio with their mutual friend Gregg back in middle school. Before Gregg got a steady job and willingly dropped the habit for his boyfriend Angus, he used to meet up with Mae and Casey to do "crimes" together.

Eventually, Mae had to move away due to her parents pressuring her to go to college, with her still being given the option to communicate with Casey and her other friends through online chats. However, Mae eventually stopped receiving messages from Casey in spring of that year and dropped out of college to return home to Possum Springs in autumn.

On her first day back home, Mae can find a missing poster showing Casey's face in the local news box, printed by his parents. She can even interact with it, but doesn't react to it at all. When they have a jam session for their garage band, Mae finds out that her former best friend Bea replaced Casey as the drummer.

Having a proper dinner with friends in the local pizzeria, the first time in two years, Mae asks them if any of them had seen Casey. Angus tells her that he suspects that he "hopped a train", with him and Gregg remembering how Casey always told them how much he hated it in Possum Springs. None of them expected him to ghost them, but they wish them the best wherever he is. The matter of Casey's disappearance is settled with her friends, but Mae is still somewhat unsatisfied with the lack of answers they gave her. Though Casey's last message to Mae does match with what her friends told them.

Mae will only bring Casey up to people she isn't particularly close to. Should Mae choose to hang out with a girl named Lori M, they would go to the tracks nearby and Mae would remark that Casey used to smoke here. Should Mae regularly talk to Germ, she will meet a hitchhiker named Angel Germ is friends with. Mae can then ask if Angel had seen Casey, giving a fairly detailed description. However, if Mae chooses to do a regular hangout with Gregg to do crimes at the abandoned supermarket, Mae will be furious at Gregg for replacing Casey with Steve Scriggins, especially since she can't stand Steve.

Eventually, by progressing through the story, Mae and friends find that the mysterious disappearances across town are planned attacks by a cult. Said cult turns out to be motivated by the belief that their town is dying because of "the youth", so they kidnap "troublemakers" nobody would miss as sacrifices for "the Black Goat". Horrified, Mae whispers Casey's name and the cult confirms that they took him. When Mae and friends call them out, telling them that they and his parents miss him dearly, the cult tells them that Casey was rotten to the core. They cite him brewing unlawful substances with his cousin, getting said cousin killed in the process as just one of his crimes, but neither Mae nor her friends want to believe them. Mae does not stop Angus or Gregg when they yell at the cultists. Though the cultists allow them to leave out of respect for their parents and the community, Eide, the only named one attacks Mae with the intent of pulling her back down again to join Casey and the others. Mae's friends manage to save her at the last second, but the elevator of the mineshaft breaks, trapping the cultists in a hell of their own making.

The next day, things start looking brighter for Mae and her friends, having not only stopped more kidnappings but also received closure for the fate of their friend. Mae then has the option to choose whether they should tell Casey's parents what happened to their son, though regardless, they all agree to spare some of the details.

The very last thing Mae writes into her journal is the message "RIP Casey", just like she did for her grandfather at the beginning of the game.

Fanon[]

Maesey is a popular ship in the fandom, though most of it is based on speculation, since the game only gives scattershot bits of trivia on what Casey was really like. Many like to think that Mae and Casey were more than just friends.

Some complain that Casey really should've been fleshed out better as a character, considering how much of the game's conflict revolves around his disappearance.

Darker theories suggest that Eide and the cultists didn't kill Casey, but rather converted him into their ranks. Some even think that Eide is Casey.
