“Don’t worry about it! In the name of love, a man will soil himself silly!”
— Gumshoe to Maggey, end credits of Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations.

Magshoe is the het ship between Maggey Byrde and Dick Gumshoe from the Ace Attorney fandom.

Magshoe-4

Gumshoe’s locker.

Gumshoe had a major crush on Maggey since she joined the force, going so far to the point that he had kept a photo of her inside his locker in the evidence room. During the trial of which Maggey was first accused of murder, Gumshoe eventually developed his crush towards her and was reluctant to testify against her. Whilst cross-examinated by Phoenix Wright, he happily agreed with the attorney whenever a point was done because it could help clear Maggey of the crime, although being penalized for it by the prosecutor from that time, Winston Payne. Even the judge pointed out about the obvious crush Gumshoe had on her, but he quickly denies it. Eventually, the true murderer would be uncovered soon. Maggey, in turn, was very grateful for his teaching during her training, but remained unaware of Gumshoe’s feelings for her. Maggey was next fired after the murder incident which she was the accused of, and then soon became a waitress at Trés Bien, but still kept contact with Gumshoe. Both are considered on having their own bad luck (Gumshoe at times, and Maggey already living with it all her life since she was born).

When Maggey was accused for the second time of a different murder at Trés Bien, Gumshoe stood by her side even though Maggey had believed that he had betrayed her. Wright tried to tell her that Gumshoe did not mean to do that, but he had to as it was his job as a detective. However, she did not listen, and states that she had gotten used to betrayal and lies, but that this time it really struck her. Maggey then claims that she hated Gumshoe and didn't want to see him again. Gumshoe tried on delivering a box of sausage weenies to Maggey via Wright, as he told him he was worried about Maggey, but she lied saying she did not like them. Eventually, through Gumshoe’s efforts, he managed to help to turn the case around and even if Wright said that it was thanks to Gumshoe, Maggey was still mad about him testifying against her.

However, this time Phoenix gave her a bigger box of weenies from Gumshoe (which was initially his lunch) to show that he really cared about her, which she happily accepted on the spot, admitting that she loved weenies, meaning that she soon forgave him and then later bought him a new trenchcoat. This is revealed at the end credits of Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, in which both are seen at Trés Bien, when Gumshoe himself had revealed the fact that Maggey had indeed bought a new trenchcoat for him in a way for thanking and forgiving him. Still, Maggey adds that she still prefers the look of the old, and dirty trenchcoat, to which he assures her that "In the name of love, a main will soil himself silly!".

Both meet again during the investigation of the murder of Buddy Faith. In this case, Maggey and Gumshoe’s relationship was brought up again as Gumshoe fiercely attempted to prove Byrde’s innocence (since she was for the third time framed for murder). At that point, Byrde would occasionally end her sentences with "pal" in a similar way to Gumshoe’s speeching habits, hinting on the effect Gumshoe has had on her. Edgeworth also remarked on the undeniable similarities between Gumshoe and Maggey. In a flashback at the end credits of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, Gumshoe and Maggey are seen thanking Miles for saving her from suspicion and catching the real murder of the case. However, it still seemed that Gumshoe had still not confessed his feelings for Maggey, and remains like it nowadays.

Anime[]

In the anime, following Maggey's first murder accusation, Phoenix asks the woman if Gumshoe is her boss, which she answers positively, and Gumshoe says that she is a trustworthy subordinate (while blushing), and in return, Maggey remarks about Gumshoe being a wonderful detective. Once Maggey is declared non-guilty of murder, Gumshoe arrives and offers Maggey a bouquet of roses, which she doesn't accept at first because he had to testify against her, but he denies saying that he was always against arresting her.

Memorial photo.

A moment later, though, Maggey accepts the present verdict, and, along with Wright and Maya, they take a memorial photo for Byrde’s not-guilty verdict, as she is happily smiling while holding the roses Gumshoe gave her, and he is next to her doing a double peace sign.

Months later, it is announced that Byrde has been arrested and pronounced the culprit owing to a poor defense by "Phoenix Wright." Gumshoe visits Wright's office and complains about the defense's setback. Phoenix responds that he was unaware of it and had never handled a case like that before, and he, along with Maya, agree that the attorney at the time was an impostor. Though Gumshoe appeared to have changed his mind about the defendant, and Wright questioned him about it, Gumshoe just left quickly, asking Wright to take the case again while blushing.

During the trial, Gumshoe is hesitant to testify against Maggey, even agreeing with the defense to establish that he was wrong, only to be corrected later by Godot. Gumshoe proposes interrogating the witness from a month ago in order to keep the trial going. He looked and nodded at Maggey. The trial is then extended for one more day, which relieves Gumshoe.

At Trés Bien, after Gumshoe explains to Wright and Maya about the lottery program he had been listening to, he asks if Maggey had mentioned anything about him, to which both lie, denying it, and Gumshoe notices it immediately as he blushes since he realized she had indeed said something. Phoenix says that because he testified against her, she hates him, and Gumshoe slams his head against the table, wondering what he had done. Phoenix and Maya attempt to console him, but it fails (as Gumshoe himself said so). The three proceeded to the kitchen to see Armstrong, but he wasn't there. They all notice a box with a bottle that is different from the rest, and Gumshoe chooses to inspect it because it lacks a scent (which makes it suspect), and he promised to do it for Maggey.

After analyzing the victim's actions prior to his death in the case, Gumshoe requests that Maya and Wright deliver a box of weenies (as a favor) to Maggey, claiming that he noticed Maggey was losing weight, to which both skeptically agree. As they send the box to Maggey in the detention center, Wright claims they were prepared by Gumshoe because he was concerned about her, but Byrde gives them to Maya, who declares she didn't like them after hearing Gumshoe's name. She briefly looks at Maya, who is eating the weenies, and appears to be hesitant.

As Gumshoe kept Furio under his own control so he wouldn't assault Wright and Maya, he told them to leave the matter to him, asking who else would defend Maggey if they weren't present.

The next day, Maggey expresses her desperation to Maya and Wright, and Gumshoe arrives to the defendant lobby, where the three are. Maggey and Gumshoe exchange a quick stare before Byrde announces her departure, and Gumshoe attempts to call her but is rebuffed with a sad expression. After presenting Maya and Wright the results of the bottle taken before, he inquires about Maggey's opinion of the food with concern. Maya and Wright are unsure what to say until the girl reveals how tasty it was. Gumshoe expresses his delight, and before Maya can remind him that it was her who ate the weenies, Gumshoe presents both an even larger box of weenies as he gleefully exits, assuring that Maggey would be declared innocent.

During the second trial, Gumshoe arrives with "decisive evidence," which he claims he had brought them for love (referring to Maggey).

After receiving a non-guilty verdict for the second time, Maggey thanks both Wright and Maya, and the latter lends Byrde the box of weenies that Gumshoe had previously handed over. Maggey tells her that she disliked weenies, but Wright reminds her that Gumshoe was the one who saved her in the end, since he investigated and presented the final evidence that closed the case. Maggey smiles and suggests Maya eat the weenie box together.

Maggey then admits that she actually liked weenies, and while not noticing, Wright thumbs up a hidden Gumshoe, as the latter cries in joy describing that it was fine like that, and congratulated Maggey for the verdict while still hiding.

At the end of the case, the now-empty box of weenies is seen on the table, left by Maggy.

Moments[]

  • When Gumshoe nervously denies his obvious crush on Maggey, Phoenix internally monologues "(...Ah, so that’s it! Our big ol’ Gumshoe has a little ol’ crush on Maggey!)".
  • When Gumshoe hesitates on showing a piece of evidence that would incriminate Maggey on committing murder, Godot tells him on saving the romantics for his own time.
  • Gumshoe trying to frame himself for murdering Buddy Faith to protect Maggey.
  • Gumshoe gifting Maggey a bouquet of roses in the anime. However this does not happen in the game.
  • Gumshoe cries in joy when he saw Maggey eating the box of weenies he had gaven to her via Wright in the anime.

Fanon[]

This ship loved by fans, though it has a small following compared to Gumworth, which is Gumshoe’s most popular ship. Although, there are people who enjoy their dynamic with it being the classical Dumbass×Dumbass (or also Girlboss×Malewife), and it is shipped also because of Gumshoe’s canonical crush on her, and because it was very obvious to the fans. Since their interactions are kinda limited, it was enough for him to develop feelings for Maggey, which as mentioned earlier, is loved by fans.

In fan fictions (usually ones focusing in major ships like Narumitsu) they are usually together either in a romantic relationship or married with or without children. However the pairing it's mentioned as minor (or background) ship, but it hasn't stopped fans from writing a relationship between them.

Although this pairing a bit controversial due to their 9-year age gap, it does not seem to annoy fans at all, as it is still shipped and do not seem to mind at all about it since both were already adults. On AO3, it has a decent amount of fan fictions, with it being 190+ works in total added. The ship itself can support others ships (being slash or het) like Narumitsu or NaruMayo.
