MakoAmi is the femslash ship between Makoto Kino and Ami Mizuno from the Sailor Moon fandom.
Canon[]
Before becoming friends with Usagi and the other Sailor Senshi, Ami was a shy girl who did not make friends easily, and preferred to spend time alone studying and reading books instead of making friends. In return, many of her classmates believed her to be snobby and arrogant because of her intelligence as she always finished at the top of national exams and never talked to anyone. However, once Ami and Usagi became friends her opinions began to change and she started to become more social.
Makoto is an independent teenager who lives in Azabu-Juuban after her parents died in an airpane accident. After she got a sense that there was a place she had to be, she transferred to Juuban Municipal Junior High School, the same school Usagi and Ami go to, the two started to form their friendship.
Originally Ami admired Makoto's strength and thought that she was very pretty and in return Makoto thought that Ami was so smart and loved her intelligence.
Like most of the Sailor Senshi the two are very close friends however the pairing gained more popularity after episode 147 of the 90's anime. Makoto states that being so tall meant not many people wanted to dance with her, to which Ami replies if she'd dance with her prompting the ship more.
It should also be worth noting that the two are often paired along with ReiNako and MamoUsa. Two very popular ships in the fandom.
In the 90’s anime Ami is often seen being the only one ‘comforting’ Makoto on the boy she used to love while everyone else simply sighs. Although sometimes even she seems in shock.

The ship became popular due to the dance scene in the original anime. Many thought that by Ami asking Makoto to dance with her was her way of flirting.
Another reason it got lots of attention was because of the opposites attract trope. Makoto is strong, extroverted, and lovesick meanwhile Ami is introverted, quiet, and doesn't go out of her way to search for romance. Some fans like to think that the reason she doesn't talk to many men is because she has a secret crush on Makoto however this was never confirmed.
A lot of fans also ship this as a way to pair up the main Sailor Senshi. It is sometimes seen side by side in official art along with Reinako and MamoUsa. To go even further some ship it as a way to pair off almost all of the sailor senshi and it may be seen in fanworks along with HaruMichi, ChibiTaru, or Dreamshipping. Although it isn't seen too often.
It is one of the most popular Sailor Moon ships and is the 10th most written work on Ao3. It is the 3rd most written ship for Ami and the 2nd most written ship for Makoto since AmiZoisite and Sailor Senshis x The Four Heavenly Kings is more popular. It is sometimes rivaled by AmiRyo and UsaMako.
