MakoShinji is the slash ship between Makoto Yuki and Shinjiro Aragaki from the Persona fandom.

Canon

Makoto meets Shinjiro on May 1st when he, Yukari, and Junpei visit Akihiko at the hospital. He reencounters Shinjiro at the back alley of Tatsumi Port Island on 6/6. He joins Akihiko to see Shinjiro and convinces him to rejoin SEES on 9/2. After Shinjiro decides to rejoin SEES because of Ken, he asks him what he is fighting for, and regardless of his choices, he respects his reasons. On October 4th, Makoto witnessed Shinjiro dying from his fatal injuries along with the other members of SEES. The following day, he attended Shinjiro’s funeral at Gekkoukan High School. Makoto can talk back at the two unnamed students speaking ill about him. During the final battle, the last person Makoto heard was Shinjiro, which gave him enough strength to perform the Great Seal.

In the manga adaption, Makoto briefly sees Shinjiro’s spirit during the final battle as he encourages him to defeat Nyx.

Like Makoto's counterpart, Shinjiro's Link Episodes must be completed in September before October 4th, and Shinjiro's final Link episode after October 5th. Throughout Shinjiro's Link Episodes, Shinjiro starts to grow closer to Makoto after school or on weekends. Makoto becomes the first person Shinjiro tells him that he doesn't have much time to live before he dies. Something Shinjiro never told Makoto's counterpart in the Portable version. In his final episode, Makoto's encouragement for Shinjiro to return to school manages to change his mind before his death.

Film

In the film adaptation, some interaction is compared to the game. Makoto encounters Shinjiro during the August full moon operation after he saves him and the others’ lives. A few weeks later, Makoto and Ken were impressed that Shinjiro could cook, thanks to Aigis translating Koromaru’s words. At the Summer Festival, Makoto hangs out with Shinjiro, Ken, and Aigis and later watches the fireworks together. During the September full moon operation on September 5th, their friendship was heavily restrained when Shinjiro mistakenly thought Makoto didn’t want to end the Dark Hour. Shinjiro violently grabs Makoto by the collar shirt and angrily demands him what his words mean. Makoto stresses Shinjiro, not take his suppressants for some time, resulting in his Persona losing control. On Oct 4th, the same day Arcana Fortune and Arcana Strength appeared, Makoto’s hesitation to defeat the two Arcana Shadows resulted in Shinjiro’s death. Unlike in the anime cutscenes seen in the original game, Makoto does not come to Shinjiro’s side right away like the others; he keeps his distance as he stares helplessly as Shinjiro dies from his fatal injuries. Shinjiro’s death significantly affected Makoto deeply as he felt depressed, which was seen a few days later at Shinjiro’s funeral. He doesn’t talk back at the students, badmouthing Shinjiro as he stares at Shinjiro’s portrait, still in shock. Despite their friendship being restrained from September, Shinjiro is one of the voices Makoto heard encouraging him to defeat Nyx.

The Weird Masquerade

Unlike Sakuya’s counterpart, he and Shinjiro rarely interacted alone. In Act 2, Sakuya first meets him after Shinjiro saved Ken from Arcana Hierophant by using Akihiko’s Evoker to summon Castor. After Ken joins SEES, Sakuya informs Shinjiro that Dark Hour might disappear once all the remaining shadows that appeared in every full moon are defeated. During the typhoon, Sakuya unintentionally overheard Shinjiro in pain due to losing control of his Persona. He hesitates asking Shinjiro if he's alright, but he chose not to. He witnesses Shinjiro's death on October 4th.

Persona Q

• If Shinjiro is chosen as Makoto’s designated partner, He will not be happy. He will try to confirm in the mechanical voice that they aren’t partners.
  • If the option chooses “My heart’s pounding.” when Shinjiro tells him to stay by his side, Shinjiro is the only person who makes Makoto blush. Shinjiro is unaware of it; he thinks Makoto caught a cold and believes it is just exhaustion piling up from one strange thing after another. Shinjiro tells him that if the burden of command gets too much, he should just let him know.

Fanon

When the game came out, MakoShinji was one of the well-known fanships in the Persona 3 fandom. MakoShinji is less prevalent in fanship than ShinjiHam. There is rarely any interaction between them in the game and manga. However, there is a slight increase in the movie adaptation. Unlike in the game, shows Makoto was greatly affected by Shinjiro's death. There have been some Yaoi fan art and fanfiction portraying them together to somehow escape death. MakoShinji increased in Persona Q, Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night, and the upcoming second remake, Persona 3 Reload.
