MarRose is the het ship between Martin the Warrior and Laterose of Noonvale from the Redwall fandom.
Canon[]
The two appear together in the book Martin the Warrior and in an animated TV series on PBS of the same name about Martin’s backstory before he came to Mossflower. They first meet when Rose finds Martin bound to two poles, being left out in the open to die. Rose is moved by Martin’s courage and saves him by using her voice to trick the seabirds away, so they don’t eat him. With Martin’s help, she is then able to save her brother, the real reason she’d come to the slavery stronghold. Upon emerging from the tunnel used to escape the stronghold, Martin is struck silent by Rose’s beauty, having come face-to-face with her for the first time.
Martin, Rose, and Rose’s friend Grumm then get separated by Rose’s brother Brome and another slave Felldoh in the chaos that happens while fleeing. Martin’s group gets captured by pygmy shrews, but they get released after Martin saves the queen shrew’s son and they head towards Rose and Brome’s home village, Noonvale. They then, however, also get captured by cannibal lizards, and Martin attacks one of them to save Rose from being eaten. After being rescued by a heron, they continue their journey but then get attacked by savage squirrels who want to play a dangerous game with them. Martin tricks them and an owl friend of theirs saves them. Throughout this arduous journey, Martin and Rose gradually grow closer in admiration and affection. They finally arrive at Noonvale, where Martin plans to rally up a small army to attack the slavery stronghold with.
Despite the concerns of Rose’s parents, Rose chooses to go with Martin back to the slavery stronghold to launch an attack and free the remaining prisoners. They are successful, but Rose is killed in the battle, and Martin is greatly grieved by this. Because he had failed to protect Rose, Martin chooses not to go back to Noonvale and instead heads south to Mossflower. He never speaks about her to anyone, silently mourning her for many seasons. Many seasons later, one of Rose’s descendants (through Rose’s brother) arrives in Redwall to share the two’s tragic story, bringing with her a cutting of a Laterose bush (named after Rose) that the abbey members plant nearby.
When a piece of Redwall’s tapestry depicting Martin was stolen, the buds of the bush wilted, and they only bloomed again after the missing piece was returned. The owl friend who had saved the two before also painted a mini portrait of the two, which she then gave to Rose’s brother’s family. Rose’s descendant wears it in a locket around her neck.
In the animated series, before the final battle, Martin fixes a rose onto Rose’s clothing and Rose openly confesses her love to Martin.
Fanon[]
Fans find them to be a very lovely but abruptly tragic couple. Both characters clearly care deeply for one another, but due to Martin’s backstory with Rose being written after Martin had shown up alone in another book that takes place later, Rose’s death was seen as inevitable from the start. Some fans think this makes Rose’s death feel cheap, but other fans think it helps make Martin’s character later in life more understanding. Many fans like imagining what would happen in an alternate timeline if Rose had survived, as shown in discussions and fanworks. Regardless, fans understand that Rose was very important to Martin and is essential to his backstory.
