Those Old Scientists[]

Upon finding out that Uhura is working on the translation, Mariner immediately volunteers to help her. Boimler whispers to call her out, but Mariner tells him not to ruin the experience for her. She joins Uhura in her quarters, and excitedly tells her that she's always admired her. Uhura is taken aback and Mariner says that she loves that she's carefree and a grade A space adventurer translator. She asks if that was too much and Uhura says that it's kinda weird that she even knows who she is. Mariner says that everyone in the future knows her, and Uhura asks what they know. She then says not to tell her, but Mariner describes how amazing Uhura is and how she still knows how to have fun. Uhura says that's not terrible, but it is a lot of pressure, especially given that she's twenty-two and hasn't done anything worth admiring. She asks how she's supposed to have fun, like Ortegas says, when she needs to translate everything. Mariner says that it's time for a break, but Uhura says that she doesn't do breaks. Mariner is starting to get that, and Uhura points out that if they don't figure out the translation Mariner is stuck. Mariner says that Starfleet codes state that they need meal breaks at regular intervals and Uhura is surprised that she knows Starfleet codes. Mariner says that of course she does, given how many let her slack off.

Mariner pours drinks for herself, Uhura and Ortegas, but Uhura sneaks her datapad in. Ortegas takes it and explains that she knows the symbols. Uhura realizes that she didn't recognize them because they were ancient Nausican and Mariner says it had to be that. But also says it was probably her needing a little break.

Fanon[]

This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.

Marhura was initially never thought of as a pairing, but many fans jumped on it once the Lower Deck and Strange New Worlds crossover came out. Many fans loved it when Mariner was revealed to be an Uhura fan. Like Boimler being a Spock fan, many interpreted that admiration as Mariner having a crush on her.
