In-game, Katarina and Maria are rivals. And since Katarina is a duke's daughter in the game, she's very arrogant and mistreats Maria because she deems her as inferior to her. In the present story, however, Maria and Katarina quickly form a close bond. Since Katarina in the present story has past memories as a Japanese school girl with humble origins, she's able to empathize instantly with Maria. Besides, although Maria is unaware of this, Katarina used to play as Maria in the game version of the story she's now in, back in Japan, so she knows of Maria's future to some extent.
Katarina's whole impression of Maria is that she's a beautiful, sweet and nice person. So her impressions are confirmed when she meets Maria for the first time. Katarina almost slips the fact that she already knows of Maria from the video game when she knows that she bakes sweets when Maria never told her that. However, she's quick to find an excuse as to why she does. Maria blushes hearing Katarina talk about how excited she is about trying her sweets, so she promises to make her more. This is extremely significant for Maria because she was bullied all her life for her sweets and was often sad no one liked them. But Katarina was the first person to appreciate her work.
Later, as Katarina was walking around the palace, already dreaming about Maria's sweets, she starts smelling some delicious pastry smell, and decides to follow the scent. There, she catches some girls bullying Maria, and about to stomp on her sweets. So Katarina rushes to defend her and to protect her from the girls, by putting herself in front of Maria. She thinks it's unforgivable to treat Maria like that and scares the girls away. Then, Katarina lets herself go and eats all the muffins that were on Maria's basket, quickly apologizing when she realizes what she's done, but Maria just tells her she was worried they fell on the floor and could be dangerous for Katarina to eat.
Katarina gently holds Maria's hands and tells her that her sweets are like a professional's, which makes Maria blush. She thanks Katarina and she starts looking at Maria with roses around her, in a very sweet way, as she thinks to herself that Maria is incredibly beautiful, and that she can make anyone's heart race. At that moment, Gerarld appears and calls for Katarina, but she's so focused on Maria's eyes that she doesn't react. Later, Katarina realizes that in the game, the one who saved Maria was Gerald, which made Maria fall in love with him, but now it's her saving Maria.
The two of them start spending a lot of time together and Katarina seems to be the one who spends the most time with Maria, as noted by her game stats. And also due to the fact that the rest of the people in the palace still bully Maria due to her powers. So in another instance where Katarina sees this, she once again gets in front of Maria and protects her, scaring the other bullies away. Except this time, Maria reacts by breaking down crying from how emotional Katarina made her feel.
Later on, Maria ends up confessing her feelings to Katarina, only because Katarina is the one to interrogate her about them. During a party, Katarina got close to Maria and asked her if there was anyone she liked. Maria sincerely reiterates what she really feels, saying she really likes Katarina. But oblivious, Katarina asks her to tell her who really likes, "likes," as romantically speaking. So Maria says there's no not a boy she's interested in. That the person she loves, admires and wants to spend the rest of her time with is Katarina. This love confession leaves Katarina speechless.
When Maria ends up disappearing in this timeline, Katarina is completely heartbroken and even goes to the first place they met to reminisce on how she met Maria, thinking about her and her sweet smile. So as soon as she wakes up from a coma, Katarina is determined to save Maria, and she does so.
Katarina regularly thinks about wanting to marry Maria, or stopping herself from impulsively proposing to her, and has even gotten jealous of a teddy bear for getting the opportunity to sleep next to her. Despite this, however, Katarina seems to be oblivious to the possibility of an actual relationship, sometimes prefacing her musings with stuff like "if I was a man".
