Maryan is the femslash ship between Ryan Wilder and Mary Hamilton from the Batwoman fandom.
Canon[]
Mary and Ryan meet after Kate Kane's plane crashes and Ryan happens to be near the site, finding the Batsuit. As Luke has the suit tracked, they find Ryan wearing it in the Gotham sewers where she states her case for using the suit. Mary's very understanding, but also exasperated as she and Luke are still looking for Kate and make no headway with Ryan who wireshoots out before they can reach her. As Mary learns that Ryan's goal is to avenge the murder of her mother by Alice's Wonderland Gang, she quickly finds understanding for Ryan's situation and motives. Simultaneously, Ryan helps them out of a bind when a fake Bruce Wayne has the Batteam hoodwinked and steals the Batmobile. Ryan manages to fight him, but is shot with kryptonite through her suit armor. Mary tries to convince Ryan to give being a hero a chance, but Ryan feels like she's not fit to step into those shoes.[1]
Alice decides to get Safiyah's attention by spreading an incurable poison to Gotham's citizens via infested Bats, only curable by the Desert Rose serum. In this chaos and to prevent Gotham's descent into even greater decay than when Kate was patrolling the streets, Mary convinces Luke that they need someone to inspire hope. Ryan agrees to don the mask once again, with Mary encouraging her and trying to instruct her on how to 'portray' the Bat as an icon. Ryan ends up saving everyone from the attack of the poisonous bats, with a quick-thinking plan to trap and annihilate them, despite Luke's initial protests. Ryan learns that Mary has an underground illegal medical centre where Alice drops by with a pint of Mary's blood from her transfusion months prior, containing the serum that can save all the infected citizens' lives.[2]
This time, Ryan stays with the team and suit, but still has to contend with an inhumane parole social worker who doesn't really see Ryan. To get the social worker off her back, she affirms that she has a job as a bartender at The Hold Up, much to Mary's surprise when she gets a call from Ryan's parole officer to confirm. Despite the roundabout way it happens, Mary is glad to have Ryan on board and Ryan's relieved to have a job, following her difficulty finding work as an ex-con.[3]
Fanon[]
Maryan has quickly become a popular ship in the fandom following Ryan's introduction in Season 2. Most cited the chemistry between the actresses as the reason, as well as Mary's support of Ryan as the reason they started shipping them. As well as many seeing Mary as Ryan's biggest fan as more fuel for the ship. Many were disappointed when the two started to spend less time together as the series went on though.
On AO3, Maryan is the most written ship for Mary and the second most written for Ryan. It is also the fifth most written in the Batwoman (TV 2019) tag.
