Masataro is the slash ship between Masaru Daimon and Jataro Kemuri from the Danganronpa fandom.
Canon[]
Masaru and Jataro attended Hope's Peak Elementary together prior to the Tragedy. They were in the "troublemakers" class, and came together with the rest of the Warriors of Hope by bonding over their terrible home lives. Monaca Towa convinced the group to commit a mass-suicide by jumping off the roof of the school, and Masaru and Jataro agreed. They joined Monaca and the others on the roof, but were interrupted in their attempt by Junko Enoshima. She abducted all five students, and gave them the idea to create a "children's paradise".
Masaru and Jataro form the Warriors of Hope with their fellow classmates, and each take on a "role" in the group. Masaru is the leader and Hero, and Jataro is the Priest. When Towa City falls to the Warriors of Hope, Jataro and Masaru are seen playing with the corpse of a news reporter on live TV. As Masaru "dies" early in the game, there is little chance for the duo to interact. Before going to fight Toko Fukawa and Komaru Naegi, Masaru locked Jataro inside a bathroom. After Masaru's defeat, the remaining Warriors hold a memorial for him. Jataro says that he wishes he had been the one to die in Masaru's place.
It is revealed in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School that all five members of the Warriors of Hope survived the events of Ultra Despair Girls. They are all still in Towa City, hiding out in a hotel and working with Toko Fukawa and Komaru Naegi.
In the non-canonical Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, Masaru and Jataro share a number of scenes. In one scene, Jataro, Masaru, and Nagisa Shingetsu are in the baths together. Jataro tells Masaru to stop splashing because it will get his mask wet. Nagisa is annoyed by Jataro and Masaru's splashing, but Jataro admits that he's having fun despite Masaru's attacks. Jataro starts to get upset, thinking that fun times pass by quickly, and Masaru tells him to stop thinking sad thoughts. In another event, the boys interact with K1-B0. Masaru and Jataro are both unimpressed with K1-B0, as they'd been expecting something "cooler" of the Ultimate Robot. When K1-B0 admits that he can shoot laser beams if he really tries, Jataro and Masaru begin to get excited. They encourage him to do it, but K1-B0 replies that it would be irresponsible so he needs to hide his powers. This convinces Jataro and Masaru that he is like a super hero, and they begin to argue over who gets to "pilot" him. K1-B0 responds that he doesn't need a pilot, but Masaru and Jataro decide to hold a race to see who gets the honour.
Jataro and Masaru are both invited to see Himiko Yumeno's final magic show on the beach. They are also both present for Kotoko Utsugi's "My Future" event. The trio are playing a game, where Masaru and Jataro are the villains and Kotoko is the helpless princess. Gonta Gokuhara hears Kotoko's screams and interrupts, thinking she's actually in trouble. Masaru, Jataro, and Kotoko chide him for misunderstanding, but when Gonta offers to play the part of their horse they get excited. All three climb onto his back, and ride together.
Fanon[]
Masataro is a rarepair in the fandom, as with most ships involving the Warriors of Hope. This is likely due to the very young age of the characters, which makes it uncomfortable for some people to imagine them in romantic scenarios. Even with that in mind, Masataro is rarepair among the Warriors of Hope. As the two are the first characters to be defeated, they have the least amount of screentime out of all five characters. They also have very different personalities, starkly contrasting in a way that not many feel like would work well together.
Those who do ship Masataro tend to do so in a "Pair the Spares" way. There are fans who truly enjoy the dynamic between the two characters and wish that the games had given us more interactions between them, but they are few and far between. The biggest rival for Masataro is their respective ships with Nagisa, Daigetsu and Kemugisa.
This ship currently has 5 works on AO3.
