Matchbook is the femslash ship between Match and Book from the Battle for Dream Island fandom.
Canon[]
Book and Ice Cube are on their way to Match's dance party when approached by Pin. As Pin tries to prevent them from going, both Book and Ice Cube insist anyways. However, when they arrive at the Clubhouse of Awesomeness, Match kicks the two out for only being alternates of the alliance. Later as Pencil's alliance secludes themselves from Team No-Name to form their own team, they are trying to figure out a team name for themselves. Match agrees with Book that they formed up for the sake of their freedom. Book puts her arm around her and suggests simply naming it "Freedom". Later during the challenge, Book slaps Match because they passed a library. Stating it's because of rules, she allows Match to slap her if they pass a matchstick factory.
While venturing inside of Evil Leafy, Book eventually finds Match. The two are both happy to see each other as Book tries to get further understanding of their situation. Match recalls how Evil Leafy ate the FreeSmart Van and ended up getting trapped in a box afterwards. Book frees Match from the box and the two head out to find the rest of the team. They find the Hand-powered Recovery Center not long after, split in two however. Match doesn't think it will still work, but Book proves her wrong after looking up a manual for it. The two are later trapped in a dungeon by Lego Brick after Book needed to kill him to progress their journey. Book tells Match to be nice when she doesn't care for Waffle's introduction to them and Tune.
After the team escapes Evil Leafy, Book tries to point out that they left Golf Ball, Tennis Ball, and Rocky behind. Match laughs at her for looking after them and when asking her if they want her team to win, she shushes Book, saying she's answered her own question. Match is reunited with Book after what seemed to be an explosion that killed her and Ice Cube. This surprises Book as Match explains the explosion wasn't enough to kill her.
As the remaining alive contestants crank for a new Hand-powered Recovery Center, Match invites Book and Ruby to break time when her alarm goes off. After a few hours, Nickel complains that their break has lasted too long. Book thinks that Nickel is right when Match argues against him, leading Match to further enforce the break time meant for them. Shortly after they return to cranking, Book sighs as Match's break time alarm goes off again.
While the team drives through Yoyle City, Match returns the favor and slaps Book when they drive past a matchstick factory. Book later shares that abandoned cities creep her out. Match tells her not to worry as they're almost at Yoyle Mountain.
Book is happy that Match isn't there to kick her and Ice Cube out of the Clubhouse of Awesomeness again.
As Book and Pencil walk over to recover the rest of their team, Book wonders if they should focus on getting Match out of the Tiny Loser Chamber. She is surprised when Pencil isn't enthusiastic about it, noting how they've been best friends. She learns that Pencil thinks they're doing well without her and she's a little too needy for her anyways.
In Battle for BFDI, Match and Pencil are shocked to learn that Book and Ice Cube would rather be on a different team than stay with the alliance.
Book explains to Pin that Match's behavior caused her and Ice Cube to disassociate themselves with FreeSmart. While talking with her, she flashes back to when Match excluded herself from the others with her break time and when she kicked her and Ice Cube out of the Clubhouse of Awesomeness.
Claustrophobe's Nightmare[]
Book greets Match and wonders what she is up to. As Match explains she was looking at clouds, the two then begin spying on Cloudy. Book believes he has suspicious motives and the two head out to get an explanation. When Book asks him what he's hiding, Cloudy is unwilling to tell her. Match threatens to destroy his entire collection with Book, causing him to admit he and Donut were hiding a claw machine. Book later gets her arm trapped inside of the machine, pleading for help. She, Match, and Donut end up stuck in the claw machine right before Cloudy is off to find Yellow Face. Followed by numerous attempts to free the three from the machine, they and the Announcer have withstood the heat death of the universe trillions of years later. Match contemplates about dying her hair blue again to pass the time. Book yells at her that it's not the time, making Match point out how nothing else is happening.
Fanon[]
Matchbook is not as popular of a pairing as many others in the fandom. Usually, the two in fan-works are part of the larger FreeSmart group, including Pencil, Ruby, Bubble, and Ice Cube. With just Match and Book, some are divided about the support for their dynamic. Those who believe in the ship enjoy their moments such as in BFDIA 5b and in the short Claustrophobe's Nightmare. The pairing has supporters on platforms such as Reddit, Pinterest, and TikTok, as well as a DeviantArt user dedicated to the ship. Within the fandom, the ship is rivaled by other pairings in the alliance such as Matchcil (Match x Pencil), Matchble (Match x Bubble), and Icebook (Ice Cube x Book).
