Animated Series[]
In the Nelvana animated series, Corflower and Matthias’ first meeting is depicted differently. Matthias, having lost his family before arriving at Redwall, was for a time unwilling to speak to others, even to tell them his name. That changed the day Cornflower first introduced herself to him, distracting him from the anger he felt at being teased by others. When Matthias responded in kind, Cornflower noted that she liked his name.
In “The Visitor”, Matthias tries to avoid fulfilling his promise to help Cornflower with an inventory of the abbey stores. When she attempts to enlist his to lead a foraging expedition, he declines due to having other obligations. Matthias again brushes Cornflower off when she asks for his help dealing with a visiting merchant. Unfortunately, Cornflower is then taken hostage and delivered to Cluny, who intends to use her as bait for a trap.
Upon learning of Cornflower’s capture, Matthias becomes determined to rescue her. He eventually cuts her free from a mill wheel she’s been tied to, and Cornflower-despite having been annoyed with Matthias previously-expresses happiness at seeing him and even jokes. Matthias, meanwhile, apologizes for letting her be captured. When Cornflower sees her captor, Matthias explains that he and the other mouse are working together “To rescue our mousemaidens.”
Matthias, realizing the level of affection he’s just expressed for Cornflower, quickly corrects himself to say “friends.” However, Cornflower isn’t fooled, and gives him a warm look before the two proceed with their escape. Later, as Matthias explains how his ally was forced to kidnap Cornflower for the sake of his own wife, Matthias admits that he would have done the same if Cornflower were endangered. He becomes embarrassed at this, but the other mouse encourages Matthias to be open in his feelings for Cornflower.
After the two make it safely back to Redwall, Cornflower praises Matthias’ heroism. Though she does note that he’s not always prompt, she kisses him on the cheek by way of thanks. Cornflower then says that he has the opportunity to make amends, and Matthias eagerly accepts. He is rather less enthusiastic when Cornflower reminds him of the inventory he promised to help with, and drags him off to start on it over his yells of protest.
In a departure from the novel, “The Final Conflict” sees Cornflower be taken captive in the midst of Cluny and Matthias’ duel. However, Matthias is able to convince Cluny to release Cornflower before dropping the Great Joseph Bell on top of him. As in the book, Matthias and Cornflower then go to the side of Abbot Mortimer as he lays dying.
Children[]
Mattimeo[]
Mattimeo was Matthias and Cornflower's only child. His full name was actually "Matthias Methuselah Mortimer" in honor of his father, Redwall's former recorder, and the late Abbey Leader.
Mattimeo would eventually marry Tess Churchmouse and give Matthias and Cornflower their only grandchild, who was named Martin at the suggestion of Cornflower and Tess' mother Mrs. Churchmouse.
