McAngelo is the friendship between Nico di Angelo and Piper McLean from the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles fandom.

Canon

The Heroes of Olympus

Due to Piper being at Camp Half Blood and Nico visiting Camp Jupiter, the two do not meet until the prophecy of the Seven has been formally undertaken. During their journey upon the Argo II, the Seven learn that Nico has been kidnapped and is being held in a jar. Piper joins Percy and Jason in rescuing Nico in Rome, where the two officially meet each other. Piper works on the defense, keeping Nico safe from harm, while Percy and Jason fight on the offense against his giant captors.

Nico returns to the Argo II with the others, and becomes an unofficial member of the quest. Eventually the group heads to Greece, and Nico and Piper enter the Necromantium alongside Frank and Jason. Nico and his sister, Hazel, use their powers of shadow travel to eventually bring Piper and the others to safety from the collapsing Necromantium. Nico then decides to separate from the group, instead using his shadow travel ability to bring the Athena Parthenos back to Camp Half-Blood.

The Sun and the Star

A year has passed since Nico and Piper last saw each other. About six months have passed since Jason Grace's death. Following his quest into Tartarus, Nico decides to reach out to Piper for the first time. He sends her an Iris message, which she is surprised to receive. She tells Nico that she never thought the two of them were particularly close. Nico also meets Piper's girlfriend, Shel, and is himself surprised to learn that Piper is dating a girl. The two discuss their shared grief over Jason's death, and Nico apologizes for not reaching out to Piper sooner. He believes she is the only one that can really understand how upset he is, as they were the two closest people to Jason.

Piper tells Nico about her relationship with Shel, and the two discuss their queer identities. They share their struggles, but also how happy being authentic to themselves makes them. They promise to keep in touch with each other, and decide that they want to become closer friends.

Fanon

The relationship between Piper and Nico is somewhat of a rare pairing in the fandom. Prior to Piper being revealed as queer in The Tower of Nero, the two did not seem to have very much in common with each other. Despite both being particularly close to Jason, Nico and Piper did not share very many interactions with each other outside of large group settings. In fact, the majority of the fan works for these two has been released post-2020.

Upon learning that the two shared a common identity and struggle, fans were eager to see more of Piper and Nico together. Some fans lamented the fact that the characters were not seen grieving Jason's death together, a fact that was remedied in The Sun and the Star. Many readers were excited to see Piper and Nico finally confront their similarities and their shared grief. However, some other readers viewed this particular scene as "fan service" and felt the conversation about queer identities to be heavy handed and forced.

Fans often view the relationship between Nico and Piper as "mlm and wlw solidarity". They are most often paired together as a platonic friendship, but there are some fans who choose to ship the two as a romantic ship. Some fans loudly oppose this, as Nico has been stated to be gay and Piper's current sexuality is unlabeled but interested in women.
