McSombra is the het ship between Cole Cassidy and Sombra from the Overwatch fandom.

Canon

Cassidy was one of the founding members of the Deadlock games, before he was arrested by Overwatch. Reaper gave Cassidy the option of joining or being thrown in prison. Cassidy chose to join and became a member of the Blackwatch team. When Overwatch disbanded, Cassidy became a bounty hunter.

Olivia was an expert hacker who was eventually picked up by the Los Muertos gang, where she stumbled upon a "Global Conspiracy". She investigated this until she was discovered, and in a panic, erased any trace of her existence. She eventually resurfaced under the alias "Sombra". Talon took note of her skills and recruited her, while she continues to search for answers.

It appears that the two know of each other or have met before based on Sombra and Cassidy's pregame interaction and the Reflections comic, in which they're drinking at the same bar. Cassidy is one of the few people to get along with Sombra and, although most of their interactions involve teasing each other, there is no venom in them, unlike Sombra's interactions with most other heroes. Based on pregame interactions in Overwatch 2, the two sporadically hang out together.

Game-play

Both are damage heroes; however, Sombra's more support-oriented kit allows her to create opportunities for Cassidy to do more damage and take out enemies. Using her hack, Sombra can disable an enemy tank's shield or pin down a mobile enemy for Cassidy to finish off. Sombra and Cassidy are one of the top-rated ultimate combos, with Sombra's EMP leaving a team completely defenseless against Cassidy's Deadeye.

In Overwatch, Cassidy was a hard counter against Sombra, as his flashbang ability could temporarily stop Sombra in her tracks. Sombra, on the other hand, was not a good counter to Cassidy, as he is one of the few heroes who doesn't rely on abilities to be effective. This led to the fandom joke that Sombra "tied Cassidy's shoelaces together" since her hack disabled his roll. With the loss of Cassidy's crowd control ability in Overwatch 2, the two are on more equal footing as enemies.

Shipping is based on the two's similar pasts and personalities. With the New Blood comic slowly rolling out, fans are speculating that Sombra will make an appearance, possibly as an ally given Cassidy had successfully recruited her friend, Baptiste, and her and Cassidy's overall positive relationship.

On AO3, McSombra is the fourth most written ship for Sombra, and the sixth most written for Cassidy. It is the thirtieth most written ship in the Overwatch tag.
