Megatron is the leader of the Deceptacons, with Starscream is his second in command. However, Starscream is constantly finding ways to overthrow Megatron and take his place as the leader. Leading to a dynamic of Starscream trying to kill Megatron and Megatron retaliating by punishing Starscream. Although some will shift their dynamic around so that Starscream is not as treacherous. Or develops into being loyal to Megatron.

MegaStar is one of the most popular ships in the Transformers fandom. As it is one of the main dynamics of almost any Transformers adaptation. Most shipping comes from Transformers: Prime, as it is the most popular of the modern day adaptations, as well as being the one that came out at the big internet fandom boom of the early 2010s. Although there are also many who started shipping them due to the G1 cartoons, given how often Transformers would end up in rather compromising positions that led to shipping. Other started shipping them from the G1 IDW comics, which greatly expand on their dynamic from the original cartoon.
The ship is often called toxic by those who don't ship it, but Many MegaStar fans see that as the main appeal of the ship. That side of their relationship often being explore in fic and art. Most of these are split between fic writers letting the characters develop so that they're dynamic becomes less toxic, or so that the two make each other worse. Some will just ignore this aspect, and just have the two as a relatively healthy couple. While others let them stay more abrasive to each other and have the two end their relationship.
With rumors that MegaStar fan artist was now working on Transformers: EarthSpark, many shippers are hoping for EarthSpark to canonize the ship. Although there has been no source provided on if this is true, so many are still wary. That doesn't stop many shippers from wanting to see a confrontation between the two in a future episode, as Megatron has since become in an autobot in the series, while Starscream is locked away by GHOST. Many are looking forward to flashback episodes that may show what their past relationship was like.
On AO3, MegaStar is the most written ship for Starscream and the second most written for Megatron. It is also the seventh most written ship in The Transformers (IDW Generation One) tag, the fourth most written in the Transformers: Prime tag and the third most written in the Transformers - All Media Type and Transformers Generation One tags.
