Canon[]
3000 years ago[]
In the past, Meliodas was the leader of the Demon Clan's Ten Commandments and was considered the heir to the Demon King's throne due to his strength and cruelty. Meliodas' personality was once much more arrogant, dark, and ruthless, as he was known as the most vile, evil, and terrifying demon in all of existence. No one dared to challenge Meliodas when he was the leader of the Ten Commandments and heir to the Demon King's throne, and he was not intimidated by any clan, fighting them and killing them coldly without hesitation.
However, upon meeting and falling in love with the goddess Elizabeth, Meliodas chose her over his clan, abandoning his title as leader of the Ten Commandments as well as his Commandment, betraying the Demon Clan in the process. This eventually led to the Holy War, a war in which he decided to fight alongside Elizabeth, along with the Goddess, Giant, Fairies, and Human Clans.
During the final days of the war, the rulers of the Demon and Goddess Clan, the Demon King and the Supreme Deity, were fed up with their children's defiance and temporarily put aside their rivalry and worked together to punish Meliodas and Elizabeth. Although Meliodas and Elizabeth tried to fight them, they could do nothing against their divine parents and were easily overpowered and killed. However, their final punishment was far worse than death. The Supreme Deity cursed Meliodas with Immortality as his punishment, reviving him every time he died in exchange for his emotions being consumed more and more until he returned to being the bloodthirsty demon he once was. The Demon King cursed Elizabeth with Perpetual Reincarnation, forcing her to live short lives as a human, in which she would always be reunited with Meliodas and die before his eyes, over and over again. Since the war, Elizabeth has met Meliodas and died 106 times before him, and has been reincarnated 107 times until her current life, Elizabeth Liones.

This cycle continued for 3,000 years until Meliodas was placed in the service of the Holy Knights of the kingdom of Danafor. It was in Danafor that Meliodas finally met a slave named Liz from an enemy kingdom of Danafor, later revealed to be a reincarnation of Elizabeth. Later sentenced to death, Meliodas freed her and personally offered to fight on her behalf if anyone opposed her. He later took Liz to his home where they lived together, often groping her chest, to which she reacted violently. Liz later fell in love with Meliodas and became his lover, with him calling her "the most important person to him". However, Fraudrin managed to escape his sealing after the people of Danafor broke the seal and he eventually attacked Danafor, nearly destroying it in his attempt to open the Coffin of Eternal Darkness. Fraudrin murdered Liz right in front of Meliodas, leaving him enraged. Meliodas later apologized to Liz for not saving her, but Liz told him that they would meet again. After seeing Liz die, Meliodas's rage caused his immense power to spiral out of control. This explosion of power wiped Danafor off the face of the world and severely injured Fraudrin, leaving him on the brink of death.
Afterwards, Meliodas found the Dragon Fist and a baby who was the reincarnated Liz. The couple is discovered by the Great Holy Knight Zaratras who tries to help them, but Meliodas warns him not to touch his wife. When the baby Elizabeth is adopted by King Bartra Liones, Meliodas asks to become a Holy Knight of Liones to be close to her.
During her time as a child, Elizabeth became very close to Meliodas, who would act as her bodyguard and miss her whenever he went on a mission. As she worried that he would not return, Meliodas promised her that he would always return to her alive, no matter what. Ten years before the beginning of the story, six-year-old Elizabeth was injured while trying to help the Seven Deadly Sins escape the castle after they were cornered by the Holy Knights of Liones, which nearly caused Meliodas to go mad, but he was immediately stopped by Merlin, who knocked him out to prevent a disaster like Danafor. This incident is the cause of her losing her memories of Meliodas and the Sins.

Ten years later, after the Holy Knights staged a coup d'état, Elizabeth followed her father's advice and escaped the castle to find the Seven Deadly Sins, the only individuals she believed could match the Holy Knights' strength, and after she met Meliodas, the two decided to set out on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins together.
Meliodas and Elizabeth have a loving and friendly relationship, with Meliodas taking advantage of her innocence and teasing her. He often "checks" her panties, and even stole them once. He also gropes her quite frequently and shamelessly. However, it is shown that he truly cares about her feelings and strengths and considers her to be someone extremely important to him, cheering her up whenever she feels helpless or doubts herself. Elizabeth also always believes in Meliodas, no matter what others say about him. So far, Elizabeth (along with her broken sword) is the only thing that triggers Meliodas's rage if either of them is taken or injured. Despite him becoming enraged and losing consciousness in Vaizel when his partial demonic state was activated, Elizabeth was the only one he did not harm. Meliodas's care for Elizabeth grew to the point where he was more furious about Elizabeth's kidnapping than his stolen sword and traveled to Liones at great speed just to save her. Meliodas has strong feelings for her, as he says that she is his light and that if she were to die, he would have no reason to live anymore.
However, after the Ten Commandments were released, Meliodas began to act distant and cold towards Elizabeth, hoping that she would stay away from him since the danger had increased, but this did not stop Elizabeth, as she still wanted to be with Meliodas due to her growing feelings for him and her desire to help him. This, however, changed when Meliodas began to accept Elizabeth again after she helped him with his test to regain his strength and soon resumed groping her. It was also revealed that the reason why Meliodas cares so much for Elizabeth is that she is the reincarnated spirit of Liz, Meliodas' dead lover.
Elizabeth was also devastated by Meliodas' death after his battle against the Ten Commandments, but continued to run the bar after his death. Elizabeth kept Meliodas' unconscious body in her bed to care for him, even healing his injuries and restoring his arm. After his return from the dead, Meliodas and Elizabeth's relationship finally became more serious, with her embracing him after defeating two of the Ten Commandments and confessing her love for him. However, he seems to still not be ready to tell her about their past together. However, when Elizabeth later meets Zeldris, it is revealed that Meliodas and Elizabeth's relationship spanned the 3,000 years that the demons were sealed away, with Elizabeth being reincarnated 107 times and Meliodas always finding and caring for her.
However, when Diane revealed the existence of a goddess who looked like her, Elizabeth began to question Meliodas about it. Elizabeth felt uncomfortable asking him about it and Meliodas himself was unable to tell her the truth, much to her disappointment. However, Zeldris reveals the truth to her when they meet and Elizabeth discovers that despite Meliodas loving her, she is causing him to suffer as well. Elizabeth desperately tries to remember, and when Zeldris restores her previous memories, her curse is once again activated as a result, which leads Meliodas to become more determined than ever to break his curses, even going so far as to unleash his full demonic powers to achieve his goal and leading to the loss of his emotions towards her and his friends. This, coupled with his resolve to become the next Demon King to break his curses, put a serious strain on their relationship. Even though Meliodas is in Assault Mode and has lost his emotions, he still maintains affection and attachment to Elizabeth, as he confronted Estarossa saying that Elizabeth belongs to him alone and later patiently tried to make her understand that becoming the Demon King was the only way to save her, but he became cynical about why Elizabeth only loves him, saying that it was the curse of the Supreme Deity. This made Elizabeth extremely upset, stating that if he really thought that way then he should have taken a different path and fallen in love with someone else. Upon hearing this, Meliodas temporarily returns to normal and states that this is inevitable, because whoever she is, be it a Goddess or the princess of Liones, he loves her the same way. Upon hearing this, Elizabeth hugged him and assured him that all 106 Elizabeths including her fell in love with him of their own free will. He then tells her that he was so in love with her that he couldn't bear it, and that just touching her made his heart race. However, Meliodas reverts to his demon form and coldly tells her that he no longer felt anything when she hugged him and that the only thing left for him to do is to fulfill his promise to her. However, despite all of this, Elizabeth still loves Meliodas deeply, and is very determined to do whatever it takes to stop him from becoming the Demon King, even if it means falling victim to her own curse in the process. After Elizabeth, along with the Seven Deadly Sins, manages to bring Meliodas back to his senses, he manages to break his curses, in addition to defeating the Demon King and Cath.
At the end of the series, Meliodas and Elizabeth marry, becoming king and queen of Liones, and have their son Tristan.
Fanon[]
Melizabeth is one of the most popular ships, if not the most popular, in the Seven Deadly Sins fandom. Shippers often praise their story and tragic past, as well as their unconditional and lasting love and care for each other.
Though the ship is still highly controversial both in and outside of the fandom, many don't like the couple's dynamic very much because of the constant harassment that Elizabeth suffers from Meliodas (even though she sometimes doesn't mind it) and the specific line Meliodas says to Elizabeth when she was a baby and much more that fans outright drop the story as a whole, while others like this dynamic because Meliodas only does this with Elizabeth, who is the only one he loves, instead of doing it with any other girl.
Their relationship is used by fans as an another factor to the "Seven Deadly Pedos" joke that fans & unfans make towards the series.
