While the relationship between both characters is never really highlighted, they appear to be on friendly terms. Many of their interactions seem to come from how Akane's recklessness often leads to her having to receive medical attention from Mikan. In Chapter 2, Akane shows up to the diner with a severe head wound. Mikan expresses concern for her well-being, and quickly rushes her into the bathroom to be treated. Later, in Chapter 3, Akane, along with Ibuki Mioda and Nagito Komaeda, falls victim to the Despair Disease, and is once again taken into Mikan's care.
In Chapter 3, during the Class Trial, Mikan is accused of killing Hiyoko Saionji and Ibuki, and Akane becomes her most vocal and persistent defender. While she is initially calm at first and simply states that Mikan isn't even capable of committing murder in the first place, she becomes increasingly more angry as the trial progresses, and Mikan is continuously cornered by Hajime Hinata and Nagito. Akane's refusal to doubt Mikan is due to the nurse taking care of her until she recovered from the Despair Disease, which implies that she holds a great amount of trust in her. She is ultimately the last one to stop defending Mikan, after being calmed down by Chiaki Nanami. When the truth is revealed, Akane is shocked and angered to learn that Mikan had killed their friends, and lied to all of them.
Although the two don't have any interactions in Despair Arc, Akane is shown to be fiercely loyal and protective of all her classmates, including Mikan. In episode 8, Nagito is told that Mikan has gone missing, and only responds with "okay." This prompts an angry reaction from Akane, who threatens to punch him in the mouth if he's forgotten about her. Akane helps aid in the search for their missing classmate. Although, her appetite causes her to get distracted, so her group resumes their search in the cafeteria.

The ship mainly sailed from Akane defending Mikan in Chapter 3. Some fans also enjoy the tough girl/gentle girl dynamic, and like the idea of a bold person like Akane protecting a timid individual like Mikan. Both characters are also heavily implied to be victims of sexual harassment, which is revealed during their Free Time Events. The severity of which was so bad, that both of them had gotten used to it and no longer viewed it as morally wrong. Because of this, fans believe that Akane and Mikan would be able to relate to and console each other.
The ship is fairly obscure in the fandom, and it loses in popularity to some of the characters' more popular shipping choices. Particularly on Mikan's side, where the ship is overshadowed by Band Aid, Hinamiki, and Komamiki. The ship is slightly more popular on Akane's side, although it is significantly less popular than Akanidai and Soniakane. Nonetheless, the ship does have a generally positive reputation among those who are aware of it.
