MikuNeru is the femslash ship between Hatsune Miku and Akita Neru from the Vocaloid fandom.
Canon[]
Akita Neru is a Miku-derived character and she was created because of a controversy about her. Basically, a Japanese TV station broadcasted a program that stereotyped Miku users as "anime freaks without stable work experience". After that Miku became unsearchable in pages search engines like Google and Yahoo and her Wikipedia article got deleted. These news became viral,to the point that on 2ch bulletin boards started a rumor about an advertising agency which had a strong influence in the Japanese music industry was behind the series of "anti-Miku negative campaign" in an attempt to purge Miku and indie musicians from the music trend. A lot of people denied the rumor for how stupid it sounded, with phrases like “飽きた、寝る。” (Got bored, going to bed.) or “寝る、お前らも寝ろよ。” (Gonna go to bed, you should too.), which generated even more negative responses. The user Smith Hioka created Akita Neru as a parody character for these posts.
Neru's impact in the Vocaloid community was to big to the point that she was officially recognized by Crypton Future Media. She has also appeared in official material such as Project DIVA, coinciding with Miku. However, Miku and Neru's relationship can variate depending on the song.
According to the semi-canon of the Akita Neru character made by Smith Hioka that was written on his blog, Akita Neru is thought of as a girl who has an unfinished cosplay of Hatsune Miku. Hioka on his blog he mentions, "Neru makes her living despising Miku (including the people who use her), but deep down she has great admiration for her. " This fact and Akita Neru's entire backstory led to Neru's most popular personality headcanon of her being a Tsundere, especially for Miku.
Songs[]
Despite Neru not having a official voice, there are many songs dedicated to her, and some of them that use different voice configurations for some Vocaloid in order to represent her.
The song Triple Baka feature the two alongside Kasane Teto, thought Neru doesn't sing. During most of the song, Miku complains about her homework and Neru passes her. Neru also hits Miku with a leek and plays with her head.
Their most popular song is Supersonic Loneliness/ Gamen no Mukou no Anata created by DeadballP. The lyrics can be interpreted as the story of a person who is in love with someone they only know through a screen. It could be Neru being in love with the idol Miku or Miku being in love with an anonymous agent from an image board.
Fanon[]
MikuNeru is not a very popular ship, mostly due to Neru not being a Vocaloid and Miku having much more popular ships. However, it has a little recognition among Akita Neru fans community. Fans of the ships are generally dedicated and passionate for the pairing.
One of the most influential MikuNeru shippers is the user ToriTeru, who created most of the VOCALOID covers of the ship, and made many fanart and covers of them as well. The username "ToriTeru" comes from the word "Toripurutēru" (とりぷるテール) translated as "Triple Tail" a tag used on Nico Nico Douga for the MikuNeru ship videos and images uploaded on the site.
On AO3, the ship has 10+ works.
Due to Triple Baka's popularity, the two are often drawn alongside Teto.
