Alma was shown to be close with Mirabel when she was a child and was excited to see what her gift might be, just as Mirabel couldn't wait to have a magic power of her own and use it to help the community like the rest of their. On the night of the gift ceremony Alma shows Mirabel the candle that is the vessel of the miracle that has blessed their family years ago and then tells her youngest granddaughter how they received it. When it was time for the ceremony Alma tells Mirabel that she is a marvel and that she'll make their family proud. Only to see the door of what could have been Mirabel's room disappear after she touched the doorknob, while the candle flickered like it was about to go out. This shocked Alma while Mirabel was looking up at her grandmother, who also didn't know why she wasn't didn't a gift or a room of her own. Resulting Mirabel to remain in the nursery, while Alma began to distance herself away from Mirabel. As she started to be very hard on her and Bruno leaving after Mirabel's gift ceremony didn't help.

While Alma focuses all of her attraction on the grandchildren that do have gifts, Mirabel tries her best to make their family proud of her and to feel that she still has a place with them. As she longs for Alma's approval, while having no idea that the approval she seeks has the rest of the family feel pressured by Alma. Making Mirabel more lucky than she thinks. Even though Alma kept telling Mirabel to stay out of the way and to not do anything that would end up harming the Madrigal's perfect image. Mirabel's parents have noticed how hard Alma is on her and ask Alma to be nice or at least go easy on Mirabel. Knowing that Antonio's gift ceremony was bound to bring up some unresolved feelings for her. Alma, however, didn't seem to care from how she failed to notice that Mirabel wasn't part of their new family photo, to mark an occasion and Mirabel never got to celebrate.

When the discord between Mirabel, Alma and the rest of their family started to cause their home to crack from the dying, Mirabel tried to inform Alma of what she saw. Only to find the cracks gone and the candle burning bright when she tried to show the coming danger to Alma. With everyone watching them and there being nothing to prove Mirabel's clam of the miracle dying, Alma refused to hear her out and then made everyone think that Mirabel was humiliating from having too much to drink. Hurting Mirabel even more as Alma restarts the party while looking angrily back at Mirabel for creating a scene. Refusing to believe that what she saw was only in her head, Mirabel deciding to check on the candle allowed her to over hear Alma pray to Pedro. Turns out that Alma did believe Mirabel's words on the cracks and the candle nearly going out, and she was afraid to lose them. Seeing her grandmother being vulnerable and scared inspires Mirabel to calm her fears by saving the miracle.

Because Alma didn't know that Mirabel was trying to save the miracle, however, she continues to be hard on her. Seeing Mirabel as nothing but trouble when Luisa informs Alma that she started to feel weak after talking to Mirabel, making Alma believe that Mirabel was somehow the cause of Luisa's fading strength, and doesn't give Mirabel the chance to explain what was really said between the sisters. Things only got worse after Mirabel saw Bruno's final vision and failed to keep it from Alma. As the green glass frame shows an image of Mirabel standing before their damaged home. Because Bruno's visions bring nothing but trouble and knew that Mirabel was in it for a reason, Alma has the family search for her. By the time Alma Mirabel, however, her youngest granddaughter had already "damaged" Isabela's golden child image.

Mirabel tries to tell Alma that the miracle was saved and that Isa wasn't happy from the life Alma had forced her to live, but Alma wouldn't hear any of it. As she begins to blame Mirabel for the cracks, Luisa losing her gift, Isabela becoming out of control, Bruno leaving and then wraps it up by telling Mirabel that she while she doesn't know why she wasn't given a gift, she wanted Mirabel to stop hurting the family. Those final words felt like a knife as Mirabel begins to realize that she'll never be good enough for Alma, and neither would anyone else in the family, from seeing the pain and pressure Alma had placed on her older sisters and their Uncle Bruno. Their fight causes the cracks to return far worse than they were before as Mirabel furiously blames Alma for being the true cause of the dying miracle. Despite trying to stand her ground, once the weight of her granddaughter's harsh words sinks in for her, Alma's expression shifts from that of absolute fury to one of horrified shock (indicating that she realizes Mirabel is in fact right).

Later on, after Mirabel has run away and nobody knows where she is, Alma's surveying the destruction of not only Casita but of the entire Encanto -- Mirabel's words really seem to be sinking in for her now, and Alma finally seems to be realizing how her actions have ultimately done the people around her more harm than good (particularly in regard to her children and grandchildren). Now just as (if not more) fearful as the rest of the family at the (now very real) possibility of never seeing Mirabel again, Alma goes out to look for her youngest granddaughter and eventually finds her by the river, pretty much in the exact same spot that Pedro had died and where the miracle was born.

Ultimately safe and sound, but still upset about what happened, Mirabel (figuring that her grandmother's going to scold and berate her like usual) starts apologizing for failing to make her family proud. But Alma finally assures her that none of what happened was Mirabel's fault -- while finally (but openly) acknowledges that pretty much everything that's happened over the years was ultimately [Alma's] own fault, Alma also ends up telling her youngest granddaughter the real story of how the miracle was born, along with what really happened to Abuelo Pedro. Afterwards, Alma (along with apologizing to Mirabel for treating her so poorly for so long) realizes that she had become so terrified of losing the miracle that she ended up losing sight of what it was for in the first place (which, subconsciously/ironically, led to Alma taking the miracle for granted).

After finally hearing the full unabridged of how the miracle was born (as well as what really happened to Pedro), Mirabel has a much better understanding of why Alma ultimately became the way she was for so long. Rather than be angry with Alma, Mirabel assures her grandmother that it's because of her that everybody was saved and they were able to stand together as a family. Alma smiles as she tells Mirabel that Pedro had sent her to save by helping to open her eyes to make she still has.

Because of the way Alma treated Mirabel for most of the 2021 film, people prefer to focus on their mended bond rather than the nature of their previous relationship. Of Alma treating Mirabel as an outcast for lacking a gift and how it keeps her youngest granddaughter from reaching her perfect standards.

One of the theories as to why Mirabel wasn't given a gift is connected to the theory of Mirabel being the next head of the Madrigal family. Since Alma (presumably) doesn't have any magical powers and is shown to have a strong connection with Casita just like Mirabel does, it would make sense that the living house could be secretly grooming Mirabel to take over as the next head of the family, either after Alma passes away or at least until Alma decides that she's too old to keep leading the leading the family. Allowing Mirabel to inherit Alma's room and duties to the family and town.

There has been an AU that has Mirabel as the female incarnation of Alma's late husband, Pedro.
