Chapter 16
Gin demands Akemi hand over the money from the bank heist. Akemi says that she kept it under custody elsewhere. She says before she tells them where it is, she wants them to let her younger sister go. They had promised her that when she was done with the bank heist, they'd let her and her sister leave the organization. Gin says he can't do that because Sherry is one of the few brains in the organization. Unlike Akemi, she is necessary for the organization. Akemi realizes that they never intended to let her and her sister be free.

Chapters 179-181
Haibara tells Conan that the biggest reason she dislikes the organization is because of her big sister. She reveals that she was murdered by the organization. When she asked them why they killed her over and over again, they refused to tell her. She refused to continue working on APTX4869 and was chained up in the lab. She took APTX4869, thinking she'd die.

When Professor Agasa asks about her parents' safety, Haibara reveals that they died in an accident right after she was born. She mentions that she was sent to study in the US while her sister lived a normal life in Japan under surveillance. She mentions that before Akemi was killed, she sent 2-3 floppy disks with trip photos on them. She would check them out with the lab's monitor and then send them right back afterwards. Haibara calls that she lost a floppy with drug data on it and was unable to find it, so one of them might have been mixed up with the trip photos.

Professor Agasa suggests going to where her sister lived, but Haibara says that the mansion where she lived was vacated when she died so her belongings must've been disposed of. She recalls Akemi saying that the one who recorded the photos' data in the floppies was the college professor that was part of the group during the trip. They call the professor to schedule a meeting to pick up the trip floppies.

While Haibara observes Conan trying to solve Professor Hirota's murder, she recalls meeting up with her sister the last time before her death. Akemi had told her about how Conan is a calm and adult-like type despite his age. When Shiho asks if Akemi will be alright because she heard things are pretty bad, Akemi tells her that she doesn't need to worry and that it'll work out smoothly. She says that she's more worried about Shiho and to stop making drugs and get a boyfriend. She remembers the news article of Akemi's death and Conan standing solemnly next to her corpse as Ran hugs him.

After Conan reveals who murdered Professor Hirota, Haibara starts crying and asks him why she didn't help her sister. She reveals that the one billion yen robber Masami Hirota was her sister. Haibara shouts that if Conan has such great deductive abilities, he should've been able to see through her sister very easily. She falls to her knees and sobs.

Chapters 423-425
Professor Agasa, Conan, and Haibara find out from Atsushi Miyano's friends that Akemi dropped by not too long ago and said to keep her coming to use the bathroom a secret. She had also mentioned that she planned to bring her sister to visit within a week’s time. After exposing the murderer, Conan finds the cassette tapes that Akemi had hidden. It's revealed that the tapes Akemi had hidden were messages from their mother to Shiho.

Chapter 1072
Conan retrieves the item Akemi left in her class' time capsule: a photo of her and Shiho when they were younger. With it is a letter mentioning how much she and her parents love Shiho even though they can't see each other. Akemi tells Shiho that she should be like a silver bullet of justice, fire straight and true and become unstoppable as she fights for all that she believes in.

Anime-Only[]

Movie 5: Countdown to Heaven
During a camping trip, Haibara uses a payphone to call her sister's apartment, which Genta overhears and tells to Conan. She tells her that she'll be going to the Twin Towers. A few nights later, she once again calls Akemi's phone number. This time Professor Agasa overhears and tells Conan that he's worried that the Organization has lured Haibara back in. Conan tells the professor to trust her. When Haibara secretly calls Akemi's apartment again, this time mentioning about the party she'll be attending at the Twin Towers. Conan has secretly followed her and pulls the plug just in time before, unbeknownst to them, Gin's program could trace the call. Conan scolds Haibara for being so reckless. Haibara runs back to her room in tears because calling Akemi's apartment and listening to the answering machine is the only way she can ever hear her voice again.

Fanon[]

Miyano Sisters is well-liked within the fandom as a family ship, as it is an important part for Shiho Miyano's character and their wholesome bond before Akemi got killed. Some of the reasons they like their sister bond are:

  • Despite not being able to meet with each other much, both sisters still loved each other very much.
  • Akemi was willing to commit crimes to try to free Shiho.
  • After Akemi is murdered, Shiho was willing to kill herself.
  • Shiho still misses Akemi greatly after her death, going as far as to risk calling her apartment just to hear her voice over the answering machine.
  • Ran Mouri often reminds Haibara of Akemi.

It has 58 works of the duo in AO3.
