Mizukana is the non-binary ship between Mizuki Akiyama and Kanade Yoisaki from the Project SEKAI fandom.
Canon[]
Mizuki and Kanade are members of the underground music circle 25-ji, Nightcord de. (Niigo) where Mizuki is the group's animator and Kanade is their composer. Within the group, Mizuki uses the name "Amia" and Kanade is simply known as "K."
Imprisoned Marionette[]
In Mizuki's "A Moment of Jest" first side story, Niigo is at the family restaurant again for their after-release celebration. When Mizuki points out that Kanade is looking at the menu intensely, she admits that she hasn't eaten anything since yesterday because she worked on the song so intensively. Kanade laughs as she watches Mizuki and Ena bicker, before Mizuki notices everyone else has almost eaten all of their [Mizuki]'s fries. Kanade agrees with Ena's assessment that one can't stop eating fries when they start doing it, and Mizuki almost retorts before remembering Kanade's current condition.
Carnation Recollection[]
After visiting her father in the hospital, Kanade walks in the rain while thinking she has no right to feel sad and she needs to create the ultimate song that will be able to save people. Mizuki, on their way home after their shift at their part-time job, spots her, remembering that she might have gone to the hospital but also thinking of not wanting to meddle around too much. Right after, Mizuki realizes Kanade might become sick from not using an umbrella. They call out to her, and Kanade admits she's deep in thought, and while Mizuki is torn whether to help her or not, Kanade proclaims she needs to go home to compose, leading to Mizuki dragging her along to a cafe.
At the cafe, Mizuki compliments it and Kanade agrees with them, before Mizuki asks if Kanade is unable to finish her next demo. Kanade admits that she hasn't made much progress with it and how it'll most likely elicit the same reaction out of Mafuyu, unable to resonate with her. She then mentions that Luka told her that if Kanade continues composing like she currently does, she won't be able clear up what's in Mafuyu's mind. Mizuki then thinks to themselves how they want to help Kanade out in any way they can, and then suggests the two go out and do something together in order for Kanade to clear out her head. Kanade is initially hesitant but upon thinking that it might give her more ideas and help her see something new, she agrees to the idea.
Mizuki first takes Kanade to a doll store and Kanade notices one of the dolls playing a music box. Mizuki then mentions that Kanade includes a lot of music box sounds in her songs, leading to Kanade saying that she has been used to listen to her father's music box, before freezing up. Mizuki notices the discomfort on Kanade's face and then drags her out to the next place, after which time skips. Mizuki says it's too bad that the art exhibit about landscapes didn't help Kanade, but while talking, Kanade notices a flower shop selling carnations and thinks to herself how her mother loved them. The two talk about flowers and Kanade remembers that her father took the whole Yoisaki family once to a field of carnations for a picnic when she was younger. Mizuki then suggests they go look for that field but despite going around all of the parks in the area, their search remains fruitless. Kanade insists they've searched enough and Mizuki is about to suggest they can do it again, but stops in their tracks after getting insecure and wondering if Kanade will even be friends with Mizuki in the future. Mizuki denies nothing being wrong when Kanade asks them, and Mizuki points out how the rain isn't letting up at all. Kanade says it was nice going around places and then tells Mizuki how she went to visit her father in the hospital prior to them meeting. Mizuki feels sad, thinking how Kanade feels that it's her responsibility to compose songs nonstop after her father's breakdown, and decides to tell Kanade how much their music has helped them.
Kanade and Mizuki find the flowerbed
Mizuki then notices the rain letting up and tells Kanade they'll show one more place to her. Before they can proceed forward, Kanade notices a flowerbed of carnations and has a flashback about the Yoisaki family's picnic, leading to her realizing that they've finally found it. Mizuki is surprised, blurting out how the flowerbed isn't big at all before realizing that to the young Kanade, it might have looked bigger than it actually is. Kanade mutters how it's so nostalgic before she starts crying. Mizuki points out that the place must be important to Kanade and then expresses their relief, before apologizing for "talking like I know everything about you." Kanade thanks Mizuki and points out that it's all thanks to Mizuki that she was able to regain her memories. Mizuki curiously asks about the memory and Kanade tells them, and how the song that plays from her father's music box is the same one he came up with during the picnic. Kanade then says she'll bring her father's music box with her the next time the group meets because she wants everyone to hear the melody. Kanade then thinks how she's happy to finally remember the memories of her past, and she agrees with Mizuki when the latter says they're glad that they came to check out the flowerbeds. This then leads to Kanade being able to produce a demo that makes Mafuyu smile.
In Mizuki's "Taking A Lost Hand" card's first side story, after the event story, Kanade thanks Mizuki for their help and bids them farewell. Mizuki is happy that Kanade is feeling better, but at the same time wonders if it's fine for them to get involved in others' matters so much. They return to the Central Street and think back on a time Niigo went to the family restaurant during one of their after parties. In the flashback, Kanade says that she isn't good with carbonated drinks and she only drinks it after the carbonation has disappeared, leading to Mizuki retorting that in the end she's just drinking sweetened water. Mizuki blurts out the memory feels almost nostalgic before feeling self-conscious and wandering around. Before long it starts raining again and Mizuki hopes Kanade managed to avoid the rain and get home in time.
Continuing in the second side story, Mizuki sneezes after they decided to walk home in the rain. They then ask if Kanade managed to get home, the latter confirming she avoided the rain and instantly took a bath while thinking about a melody. Kanade then asks why Mizuki didn't use their umbrella, and Mizuki claims they wanted to mimic "that one famous musical where they dance in the rain" and deliberately letting the rain do its work. When Mizuki sneezes again and says their temperature is still normal, Kanade suggests they take some cold medicine, but Mizuki declines and says all the medicine at their house is granule medicine and how they hate bitterness. Kanade then recommends ginger tea and mentions her mother used to make it often with honey for her when she was young. Mizuki remembers Kanade thanking them for helping her recall her memories, and Mizuki says they'll try it out. Kanade also tells them to take it easy, and Mizuki is trapped in their thoughts again, thinking how nice it feels to have everyone caring for them.

Mizuki asks how the video is going, stating they tried all of Kanade's suggestions to fix up the video. After a couple seconds, Kanade tells them it's much better then before, and Mizuki cheers after hearing that. Niigo gets some rest, and the next day, after Mizuki sees the song got a ton of views, Mizuki calls Kanade an incredible person.
And Now, I Wear This Ribbon[]
After Mizuki's favorite anime ended and the day for their sister to leave overseas approached, Mizuki was in their room and by coincidence found Kanade's music. The thumbnail of the video was black but it appeared to be a song. Although Mizuki found it scary, they decided to watch the video.
While Mizuki listened to that song, they felt a painful sensation, but at the same time felt a gentle vibe from the song. Mizuki felt a little better after listening to that song, and after it ended, Mizuki listens to it from the beginning again. Mizuki decides to browse through Kanade's account to see if she has more songs, leading to them listening to Kanade's other songs. After a while, Mizuki thinks they can still do something as Kanade's song felt like light was shining into their world.
Mizuki then finds Ena's art and asks for her permission to use it on a fan video of one of Kanade's songs. A week later, Mizuki receives a DM from Kanade, where Kanade mentions that she saw the music video Mizuki made and says she thought it was wonderful. Kanade then asked if Mizuki could make another music video for another song of hers.
Mizuki is surprised and finds this suspicious since the account had a default icon and also had no followers. So they asked for proof that she is really K. Kanade thanks them for the answer and sends them one of the demos of one of her previous songs. Even though Mizuki thought it might be some kind virus, they still opened the file to find out. Mizuki apologizes for doubting Kanade and asks if they could explain which song she wanted Mizuki to make a video for. Kanade asks if Mizuki had a Nightcord account so she could give them details about the music video.
After a while, when Mizuki and Ena were working together to make the music video for Kanade's new song, Kanade and Mafuyu watched the video. Mizuki asks if there was anything she wanted to adjust. Kanade replies that everything was fine, and that she could see that Mizuki and Ena expressed what they felt when listening to the song with all their might. Mizuki thanks and blushes for the compliment. Kanade asks if Mizuki and Ena want to work with her and Mafuyu. Mizuki replies that they needed some time to think. Kanade understands and says that wanted to see something Mizuki create again, because their creations are painful but kind. Kanade says she will be waiting for Mizuki's response.

Fanon[]
While not a rarepair, Mizukana is the least popular Niigo pair. It mostly rivaled by each others' more popular ships such as Mizuena, Kanamafu and Honakana. It has a bit more support in the Eastern fandom. The Carnation event, where the two go on a quest to find the flowerbed from Kanade's memories, gave some boost for the ship, as it is also the only event that particularly focuses on the two. As a result many fans are disappointed that Colorful Palette has not given their relationship much development and how their sections in their relationship charts have remained the same for 3 years.

The first Mizukana Week was held on November 13-19, 2022, under the kanamizuweek2022 hashtag on Twitter. Prompts for the first day were "flowers or fantasy", "reunion or memory" for the second day, "swap" for the third day, "crush or confession" for the fourth day, "affection" for the fifth day, "cafe or first date" for the sixth day, and seventh and last day was "rain or distance".
