The two first met when Momo intervened in the middle of Okarun being bullied. She sat in the chair adjacent to him, scaring and surprising the bullies. She left afterwards, with Okarun giving chase. He thought she was into aliens too, just like him, because of her willingness to talk to him. Momo, still reeling from an earlier break up, shut him down. Feeling terrible, she quickly apologized while mentioning her own fascination with spirits. Okarun ridiculed her fixation, to which Momo responded by bringing up the fact that her grandmother is a medium. This led to the two on a dare; Okarun would visit a haunted tunnel in exchange for Momo exploring an empty hospital, in order for each of them to prove that the other's respective belief was nothing but a sham.
Both arrived at their own destinations, while still arguing about whether spirits or UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena) were real, via phone call. Their conversation was interrupted when Okarun stumbled upon an old spirit who said something inappropriate to Okarun and then chased him. Meanwhile, Momo encountered three identical aliens named the Serpoians, who kidnapped her and planned to have sexual intercourse with her. Although the Serpoians could reproduce without women, they needed other races to evolve their species, and happened to prefer "woman persons."
Before any bodily harm could come to Momo, Okarun called her. His possession by the prior spirit - dubbed Turbo Granny - allowed him to come out of Momo's phone and get inside the alien ship, where the Turbo Granny immediately attacked the Serpoian aggressors. Okarun was able to take back some control of his body and use a bit of his newfound power to take down two of the aliens. However, the third one managed to pin him down using a form of telekinesis. Okarun pleaded with the aliens to release Momo, even if he had to sacrifice himself, citing that all his life, he had been bullied by his peers for wishing to meet one, and was very happy that someone like Momo was willing to converse with him.
Momo, remembering an old technique her grandmother taught, a form of psychokinesis by the sense of touch, practiced it to devastating effect. She blew the aliens away, and deterred the Turbo Granny, but not before she managed to snatch Okarun's family jewels.
In the aftermath, both acquiesced in their newfound belief in the existence of aliens and spirits. Okarun tried not to involve Momo any further, but she persisted, stating it would be dangerous if he dealt with it alone. She was caught off-guard when Okarun muttered a familiar line, "I am an awkward fellow, after all," once said by her celebrity crush, Ken Takakura. When she breathlessly asked his real name, Okarun revealed that his given name happened to be none other than Ken Takakura!

- From a very young age, Okarun's only wish was to meet aliens. He had also been a victim of bullying ever since he was little, mostly stemming from his interest in the occult. He'd defend it adamantly, which only fueled the bullying. Despite his strong feelings about his interests, he started insulting the first aliens he met because they hurt the first and only person (Momo) who had ever been nice to him or that he could call a friend.
- Ch 159, Okarun was not letting go of Momo's hand when she was telling him to let go. He kept holding her hand and told her that he loves her and doesn't want to be separated again from her.
Fanon[]

Momokarun is the most popular pairing for both characters, as well as the series. This could be attributed to the fact that their relationship served as one of the main sub-plot. Fans also liked that both characters had their own personalities and goals, and the healthy progression of their relationship. Despite challenges from the love rivals, such as Jiji for Okarun, and Aira for Momo, the two remained devoted to each other.
Fans like to draw a parallel of the two with WakaMarin[1] since both follow the dynamic/trope of a popular and pretty gyaru girl ending up with the quiet dorky guy where ironically just so happens that the popular girl is also a dork.
The ship has over 700 fics on AO3.
