Monkey D. Luffy is a pirate who captains the infamous crew, the Straw Hat Pirates. A happy-go-lucky pirate, he sails the seas to become the next Pirate King and to fulfil the promise he made to his hero, Shanks. Luffy's ever growing power and good nature has allowed him to become a hero to citizens all across the seas, a notorious, dangerous and powerful individual in the eyes of the World Government, and a great rival and inspiration to other pirates. Luffy's many exploits and success has propelled him to the forefront of piracy across the One Piece world.

Nami is one of Luffy's closest friends. She is one of the very first to join his crew and, after her brief betrayal, the two have stuck by each other's side. Whilst their personalities strongly differ, with the two frequently clashing, they hold each other in the highest regard. For Nami, Luffy has become the person she values most in the world, seeing him as the person she can rely on more than anybody else. This is a result of his actions of saving her from Arlong, the fish-man who had tormented her since she was a child.
More so than anybody else, Luffy trusts Nami implicitly. She has been the only member of his crew that he has repeatedly given his straw hat to, and has trusted her to be in charge of sailing their ship, even surrendering his own authority. Whilst they are very close to the other members of their crew, their relationship continues to be a dominant feature of their adventures, with Nami having a frequent and loud say in Luffy's decision making, be it who they ally with or where they can go on their adventures.

Hancock has a deep infatuation with Luffy after the two met on her island, Amazon Lily. Initially, she had a strong dislike for him, as she did for all men, but she felt particularly irritated by Luffy because of his blunt, rude and unfazed attitude which undermined her vanity. However, seeing Luffy's genuine kind heartedness, and discovering the news that he had assaulted a World Noble without hesitation, caused her to rapidly fall into a deep love for him. Whereas before she was cold, stoic and prideful, she becomes silly, goofy and nervous around him.
Whilst the two have not maintained any relationship, she proved to be an extremely helpful ally when Luffy sought to infiltrate Impel down and fight at Marineford. Luffy now sees her as a good friend and ally, being extremely grateful for how much she has helped him. Nonetheless, he has yet to take note of Hancock's feelings for him and has refused to marry her on two separate occasions.
