Montarl is the slash ship between Monty Monogram and Carl Karl from the Phineas and Ferb fandom.
Canon[]
Overview[]
Carl began on somewhat unfriendly terms with Monty, when they first met, being upset with how Monty was always getting more respect his boss, from Francis Monogram, given how he was his actual son. Carl would soon be able to earn more gratitude from Francis, using Monty as a pawn. Carl spotted Monty dating Vanessa, daughter of Francis' sworn enemy, Heinz Doofenshmirtz, and used this as leverage to blackmail him into prompting Francis to give him more respect. Although Monty was annoyed with Carl's intrusion and manipulation, he felt it reasonable to go along with it, seeing how rudely his dad treated him. Monty convinced Francis to be nicer to Carl, which he did. With that, Monty's debt to Carl was paid off and they had afterwards become good friends.
Season 3[]
MINOR MONOGRAM
Major Monogram told Carl that he was like the son he never had ... because he was completely inferior the actual son he does have, Monty Monogram. This made Carl grow instantly jealous of Monty for everything he was. Francis was appalled with Monty for not wanting to be an acrobat, like he always trained him to, instead hearing that he wants to fight evil with him at O.W.C.A. Carl offered to become an acrobat for Francis so that he could like him instead but Francis completely ignored him.
SIPPING WITH THE ENEMY
Monty briefly brought up Carl on his date with Vanessa, saying that despite Carl being able to program the most sophisticated tracking satellite in the world, Francis still can't seem to work a landline, when calling him on the phone.
Season 4[]
MY SWEET RIDE
Major Monogram spied on his son when at the drive-in movie theater to see who he's dating and took Carl with him to be his little lackey. Carl looked through his binoculars to see Monty dating Vanessa, the daughter of Monogram's archnemesis. Monty noticed that Carl was watching him and signaled that he'd better keep quiet. When asked who he sees, Carl just smirked and said "Someone who owed me a lot of money.", implying that he would be blackmailing him in the future.
THANKS BUT NO THANKS
Carl would prove to be a man of his word when he came down to Steam Noir after one of Monty's dates with Vanessa to pester him. Monty knew that the had this coming so he just gave in and asked Carl what he wanted from him. Carl told Monty that he wanted him to convince his dad, Francis Monogram, to disown him and adopt him as his son instead, which Monty pointed out was totally unreasonable. Carl explained that Monogram never gives him any thanks for the hard work he does and needs Monty to convince him to express just a little bit of gratitude toward him. Monty obliged and set up a situation, where they went on down to Alfonso's fancy restaurant for a little father-son-unpaid intern dinner together. The entire time, Monty tried to do many things to lead Francis into thanking Carl but none of them were working. Instead, Francis just ended up thanking a bunch of other people like Monty, Alfonso, and the bathroom attendant. Monty's final attempt at prompting gratitude from Francis was hooking up a grand piano to land on him, so that Carl could save him. This worked perfectly but Major Monogram still refused to thank Carl. Monty finally just broke the ice and demanded Monogram thank his son, which he finally did, making Carl faint with joy. As such, Monty's debt to Carl was paid and Carl left him alone.
PHINEAS AND FERB SAVE SUMMER
Monty was surprised to see that Carl has become the Major-in-Charge of O.W.C.A. but equally disappointed to hear that it was at the expense of his dad being fired. Carl received word that L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. was hosting a secret meeting and that the entire globe was being plagued with climate change. Carl freaked out, not knowing what to do so Monty helped him pull himself together and figure out a plan. Monty told Carl that he knew the agency just as well, if not, better than his dad. Monty's advice to Carl was to ask himself "What Would Major Monogram Do?". This motivated Carl to get his act together and order all of the animals to get busy on tracking down L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. and stopping them from whatever it is they were doing to the weather. Monty asked if he could do anything to help and although Carl initially discouraged him from participating, due to not being an animal, Monty let him know that with a situation this serious, he needed all the help he could get. Carl appointed Monty as an "unofficial agent" and sent him down to spy on L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. and also thanked him for helping him out. When Carl learned that L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. had kidnapped a bunch of animals from O.W.C.A. and were using Doofenshmirtz's inator to change the weather and help them control the world, he warned Carl straight away, prompting him and Perry the Platypus to come on down and fight them all in person. While they fought the evil scientists, Perry knocked one of them out and Monty said that now they should "get all his health", leading Monty to tell him that he plays way too many video games. Later on, Francis nearly fell off a building before Carl saved him and Monty complimented his catch.
Fanon[]
Montarl is a surprisingly common ship in the fandom, with many fans finding their friendship to be rather endearing. The way Monty helped Carl to earn the respect of Francis and also inspired him to take charge of O.W.C.A. as Major-in-Charge was very sweet. Fans consider their relationship to be exceptional, albeit mildly underdeveloped in the original series and hope to see more episodes with them in the upcoming reboot. Their biggest rival ship is Montessa, which's biggest rival ship is Ferbnessa. This makes plenty of Ferbnessa shippers support Montarl, as it's a romantic and fitting way to help get Monty out of the equation of their own OTP.
