Life is Strange: Before the Storm[]
In 2010, Nathan and Samantha are both students at Blackwell Academy. Depending on player choice the two of them can develop a friendship or become enemies.
Episode 1: Awake[]
As Chloe Price is about to make her way to Blackwell Academy’s front doors, Nathan comes up speed walking from behind her, running into her, knocking them both to the ground. From this, Drew North catches up to Nathan, taking Nathan’s photo portfolio, withholding it from him. Nathan and Drew go at it, exchanging heated words. Samantha, who was sitting not far away, runs up to Chloe’s side, yelling at Drew to leave Nathan alone. With her moment of bravery diminished, she looks to Chloe to help him. Player choice, Chloe can enter into a backtalk challenge against Drew.
Should Chloe win the challenge, Samantha is thrilled, laughing at Drew and telling him to “shut the fuck up.” When Drew leaves, she walks up to Nathan and gently touches his shoulder, asking if he’s okay. Nathan turns his attention to Chloe instead, fuming that she helped him. Nathan leaves the scene. Samantha turns to Chloe, thanking her for sticking up for him. She begins to say something about his family, but she’s scared off when the school’s campus security guard walks up to them.
Should Chloe fail the challenge, once Drew walks away, Samantha will be appreciative that Chloe tried to help Nathan. She thanks her and begins to say that Nathan is unfairly picked on just because of his family. She intends to say more, but she’s scared off when the school’s campus security guard walks up to them.
Episode 2: Brave New World[]
The following night at Blackwell is the premiere of the stage play The Tempest, where Nathan is preparing to perform. Chloe can walk up to Samantha who’s eavesdropping on Nathan being scolded by his father, Sean Prescott. After Sean leaves, Nathan looks disheartened, but his expression quickly switches to rage. Samantha says his name, but Nathan storms past her and Chloe, shouting “fuck” as he enters into the boy’s changing tent.
Not sure what to do, Samantha slowly paces back and forth. Chloe can walk up to her, confirming that Sean is “some asshole”. Samantha agrees, wishing that he’d just go away and leave Nathan alone. As the two talk, Samantha confides that she knows Nathan is hurt and that he needs help, but whenever she tries to help him, she always seems to make things worse. She asks for advice, that if Chloe were Nathan, what would she want her to do – give him space, give him help or give him up.
Give him space; Chloe can advise Samantha to wait for Nathan to come to her when he wants to. Give him up; Chloe can advise Samantha to leave Nathan alone. She tells her to stop trying to help because she’ll “just end up hurt”. Give him help; this advice is the best option for the best outcome for Nathan and Samantha’s relationship. Chloe can advise Samantha that even if Nathan doesn’t want help, he needs it. He needs someone to show him that there’s, in fact, someone that does care for him.
Following the performance, after most of the people have left for the night, Samantha sits alone in the audience seats. As Nathan emerges from behind the stage, Samantha stands and cheers for him, which he appreciates, smiling and approaching her.
Episode 3: Hell is Empty[]
The following day, Chloe goes to visit Rachel (and Mikey North) at the hospital. Depending on the player’s choices of the previous two episodes, will determine where Nathan and Samantha’s relationship stands.
If Chloe won the backtalk challenge against Drew and advised Samantha to help Nathan, Chloe can hear Nathan and Samantha talking behind a closed door. Since the two are have become friends with each other, Nathan, an ammeter photographer, took a photo of Samantha, however during she was hit by a biker. Nathan brings her ice scream and tells her he feels bad about it, as he should have seen the biker coming. Samantha tells him it wasn’t his fault and that she’s a klutz. At the end of the episode and out of the hospital, Samantha is reading beneath a tree when Nathan approaches her with a book in his hand. He sits down next to her, and she looks over at him and smiles. They read their books in a comfortable silence.
If Chloe lost the backtalk challenge against Drew and advised Samantha to help Nathan, Chloe can hear Samantha’s mother and Nathan’s father arguing in Samantha’s room. It’s revealed that Nathan broke two of Samantha’s ribs when “defending himself against unwanted and inappropriate physical contact”. At the end of the episode, Nathan is seen sitting beneath a tree alone, shaking his head in regret.
Regardless of the backtalk challenge against Drew, if Chloe advised Samantha to give up or give space to Nathan, at the end of the episode, Samantha is seen reading beneath a tree when Nathan approaches her with a book in hand. She shakes her head and walks away, leaving Nathan saddened.

Myerscott is a small, though enjoyed ship with the Life is Strange fandom. They’re often seen as a side-paring. Judging from Samantha’s behavior towards Nathan in the first two episodes of Before the Storm, fans were quick to pick up that it’s most likely true she has a crush on Nathan. However, any romantic establishment between the two is never strictly confirmed – only friendliness and supportiveness. What happens between Nathan and Samantha is player choice. As Chloe Price, players most often make decisions that help them become at least friends.
