MysteryOwl is the het ship between Eda Clawthrone and Stanley Pines from the Gravity Falls and The Owl House fandoms.
Canon[]
Being from two different show, Stan and Eda never met. However, Dana Terrace, the creator of The Owl House, worked on Gravity Falls before creating her own show, and Alex Hirch, the creator of Gravity Falls, voiced Hooty, King and Season 1 Steve on The Owl House. The two shows have numerous references to each others as well. This makes it likely that they belong to the same universe.
Stan and Eda are both con artists. Stan shows fabricated cryptids to tourists, and Eda sells human trash to witches. They both have estranged relationships with their siblings, which they spend the better portion of their series trying to mend. They both take parental roles for the young protagonists of their shows, with the difference being that Stan is actually Dipper and Mabel's uncle, while Eda is an honorary mother to Luz.
There are numerous references to Stan's ex-wife "Marilyn" in Gravity Falls' supplementary material, and she sounds like Eda based on description. In the Director's Commentary for "Land Before Swine", Alex Hirsch tells the audience about Marilyn in-character as Grunkle Stan: She looked about his age, had a sharp golden tooth and wore a shirt saying "Over 30 and very flirty". Eda's curse meant that she aged quickly, her golden tooth is a distinctive feature of hers and Eda owns a cup saying "30 and flirty". Stan also believes that "Marilyn" was a fake name and says that they were married for 6 hours in Vegas, with her only going through with it to steal his car. Furthermore, a silhouette of Eda and her staff appear in a wanted poster in the Gravity Falls graphic novel "Lost Legends".
In the Owl House episode "Yesterday's Lie", a cashier in Gravesfield recognizes Eda as "Marilyn". We are shown an image of Eda on a corkboard that says "Banned for Life". The photograph is signed "Marilyn". This confirms that she did indeed use that name while visiting the human realm. In a Reddit AMA, Dana Terrace confirmed that Eda had been to Las Vegas before.
Fanon[]
MysteryOwl is one of the first, as well as one of the most popular, crossover ships within the TOH fandom. It is also one of Eda's more notable ships, alongside Raeda and Camileda. It started due to their large amount of similarities, as well as the connection between both shows and their creators.
People are completely convinced that Eda is the same woman as Stan's ex-wife Marilyn, to the point where some even treat it as 100% canon, even though it was never confirmed. Since Alex Hirsch and Dana Terrace worked together on both shows and even dated at one point, most think that the many similarities between Eda and Marilyn can't be a coincidence, especially since both shows love cryptic background references. With the confirmation that Eda has used the name Marilyn in the human world before, the theory was all but confirmed by the show.
In AO3, the ship currently has 48 works.
