Nakia and Zoe don't start their relationship in the best way. Zoe used to be a bully, the most popular girl at her high school and used to date the star athlete of the school, Josh. While Nakia used to be very conservative and reserved. The first time the two of them are seen together, Zoe is disrespectful to Nakia. However, during the convergence, since Zoe thought the world was going to end, she had an entire existential crisis where she reevaluated a lot of things in her life. She realised she was a lesbian and broke up with Josh, and apologized to Kamala and Nakia for the way she treated them and started being their friend. Especially with Nakia. She and Zoe became inseparable.
When Josh gets unjustly arrested by Captain Marvel's preemptive justice cadets, Nakia accompanies Zoe to the detention center, to demand his freedom. Zoe gets to talk to Josh in private, about why he was arrested. Zoe opens about the fact she never liked boys, but thought that she had to follow the flow since boys always liked her. So Josh asks her who is the person Zoe likes. As Zoe stares at Nakia from afar, Josh realizes that the person Zoe has feelings for is Nakia.
For months, Zoe wrote romantic texts to Nakia, but was careful to always delete every message before sending them. Unfortunately, Zoe never cleared her deleted messages folder on her phone. And this was used against her by a sentient virus called Doc.X So Kamala decides to pay a visit to Zoe to warn her that Doc.X intended to expose her crush on Nakia unless Ms. Marvel could defeat him soon, which was looking unlikely.
The texts end up leaking because Zoe ends up choosing her friendship with Kamala over being forcefully outed. And the next day at school, she breaks down as soon as a boy shouts her love confessions to Nakia out loud. At that moment, Nakia suddenly comes behind Zoe and engulfs her in her arms, comforting her. After this touching moment, Kamala and more friends, kids from all around the school, join Nakia in her hug, showing their support to Zoe.
Zoe meets with Nakia at the park later on and finally confesses her feelings for her. Deeply worried about the fact that Nakia could hate her, Zoe apologizes in advance, but Nakia lets her know that she's in awe of her and that she will support her and be by her side no matter what.
- Zoe, listen to me. I don't hate you. I'm in awe of you. A year ago you were this awful mean girl who made people feel bad about themselves and thought it was cool to be dumb. And then you decided to change. You never even asked for help. You just turned your life around, step by step, on your own.

Nakia x Zoe is a rare pair in the Marvel fandom. However, it's one of the most popular ships in the Ms. Marvel fandom. As soon as the TV series for Ms. Marvel was announced, fans of the ship started having hope that maybe the TV series could make them canon, diverting from the comics were Nakia doesn't reciprocate Zoe's feelings for her.
