NanakOliver is the het ship between Nanako Hasegawa and Oliver Hasegawa from the SK8 the Infinity fandom.

Canon[]

In the first episode, Langa and Nanako are introduced for the first time. During this moment, Nanako expresses her concerns about relocating to Japan after spending over a decade in Canada with her late husband, Oliver, and their son, Langa. The latter, in a somber tone, attempts to reassure his mother that he is fine. The reasons behind their sadness and relocation to Japan are later revealed in subsequent episodes of the anime.

As Langa returns home with bandages on his face, Nanako worries about potential bullying at school and wishes Oliver could be there for their son. When Nanako questions Langa about the bandages, she perceives his response as unconvincing and mistakenly assumes he is indeed being bullied. She experiences a moment of panic and seeks guidance from Oliver by talking to their family photo, a habit she has always maintained. Upon learning the true cause of Langa's injuries, Nanako feels relieved and proud that her son has finally found a friend, especially after initially feeling down upon their arrival in Okinawa. The family photo is then shown, symbolizing their unity.

Before attempting an ollie, Reki inquires about Langa's move to Okinawa, to which Langa explains it was due to his father's passing, prompting the relocation to Nanako's homeland for employment opportunities and to support the family.

In a later episode, Nanako's workplace is revealed, and she discusses with a colleague how Langa had become emotionally withdrawn after Oliver's death. She debates whether relocating to Okinawa was the right decision, fearing that she was taking Langa away from snowboarding, which had been a passion for him before Oliver's passing. Ultimately, she acknowledges Langa's positive transformation and expresses hope that he does not feel too consumed by his emotions. Following a confrontation between Reki and Langa, Nanako notices her son's subdued demeanor and turns to Oliver for internal guidance once again. After providing Langa with advice and inadvertently misinterpreting his feelings for a girl (Langa was, in fact, attracted to Reki, another boy), Nanako is taken aback when Langa questions her assumption, and the scene concludes with a glimpse of Oliver in an inset. This scene leads fans to speculate whether Oliver may have been the other person, besides Nanako, to utter a perplexed 'Huh' due to the dissimilarity in voices.

Nanako still loves her husband, keeping the wedding ring with her and visiting his grave, which is shown at the end of the anime.

In SK8 Chill Out! - Line 12, both Nanako and Langa are seen visiting Oliver, and as Langa narrates on how he fell a cliff, and how could hear his dad asking him if he was having fun, Nanako, horrorized, asks Oliver internally if it was the first thing he had to say to [Langa] when he's fallen off a cliff.

Children[]

Langa Hasegawa

Hasegawa Langa

Langa is Nanako and Oliver's only child. As soon as he was born, he was taught on snowboarding when he was very young, and when he was already used to it, Oliver dies, making Langa lose interest on snowboarding, since his father used to teach him snowboarding in their natal country, Canada. As soon as Nanako and him moved to Japan after Oliver's death, she was worried that he could not get used to the new place, and was struggling whether if it was a good idea bringing him to Okinawa or not. However, after a time, she noticed that Langa was a bit more cheerful when they arrived, as he said to his mother that he had a new friend. She's happy about it. Even if Langa doesn't really look like either of his parents, he still have some things like his eyes that resemble to his father and his facial expressions to his mother. He's cold and not social as he isn't used to live abroad besides Canada, but after meeting Reki, he's getting used to it, even making another friends along with Reki like Miya, Hiromi, Cherry, and Joe.

He is a professional at snowboarding, and thanks to its similarity to skateboarding, he got used to skate with Reki's teachings, even surprising himself and Reki too even after everything Langa went through for managing getting used to it. This was revealed when he first managed to do an ollie, which excited both Langa and Reki. He's also an air-headed person, as he couldn't understand well what other people were feeling at all like when he fought with Reki after the latter told him that it was too dangerous to skate against Adam, with later splitting away from each other for a time. Langa felt really depressed about it, as he lost his fun at skateboarding, and it was revealed when he raced against Joe in "S". Reki eventually goes there for looking on Langa and when he noticed him looking down, he cheers up for Langa and Langa regains his energies (and his fun) when he saw Reki. After reconciling with Reki, both mutually cheer each other, even at hard times just like when Reki raced against Adam, and when people like Miya thought it was impossible to win against Adam, Langa had hope that it was on the contrary.

When Adam advances to the finals, he races against Langa, which latter was decided on doing so. The scenario where both were going to skate was really risky and dangerous, and when they started, Langa fell off a cliff which made him think that he would die, until he saw his skateboard and Oliver, and thanks to both, Langa managed on maneuvering so that he could not crash, thus taking a shortcut to reach Adam and end up winning. He felt very happy, not because of his victory, but because Reki was watching him. This is explained when Langa's expression is seen when he approached Reki on his skateboard; happiness and relief. At the end of the anime, he mentions about his happiness, with it being... (Langa's POV directly towards Reki).

Fanon[]

It's a common pairing, but not popular. Still, it's loved by the fandom. However, it takes a bittersweet turn with Oliver's introduction and mention of his death. Questions arose about Langa's resemblance to Nanako and Oliver, leading to theories like Langa actually dyeing his hair or his dad dyeing his'. Some fans speculated that Oliver was the mysterious person referenced by Nanako, based on the different voice heard by Langa. While unconfirmed, this theory has garnered attention among fans.

Nanako tends to be shipped also with women, like Kiriko Kamata, although both never met nor interacted in the anime but still it's a popular ship but not as much as Nanako and Oliver. On AO3, it has less than 50 works created. It's one out of the three minor het ships of the fandom, with the other ones being KazuMiki and HiroManager.
