NaoMasao is the slash ship between the Persona 1 protagonist and Masao Inaba from the Persona fandom.

Canon[]

Naoya is designed as a silent protagonist. This ambiguity invites players to project emotions and relationships onto him. His interactions in the game are minimal yet poignant—often delivered through context, body language, and the reactions of those around him. This absence of explicit dialogue leaves ample space for fan interpretations.

The relationship between Naoya and Masao is portrayed as a strong friendship, though it remains platonic. In the game, Masao is characterized as a rebellious troublemaker who is friends with Kei Nanjo and the protagonist. In the manga, Naoya is depicted as a calm and collected individual who tends to keep to himself. While their interactions are significant within the narrative, there is no canonical evidence to suggest a romantic relationship between the two characters.

Drama CD[]

In the first volume of the Megami Ibunroku Persona Drama CD, during the fight with Mark's friend Bernie (who was possessed by his persona), Masao attempts to provoke Bernie to prevent him from further attacking his allies. However, the protagonist (called Yuuya Narumi) interrupts by activating his persona Seimen Kongou knowing that Masao wouldn't harm Bernie because he is his friend. Masao becomes worried about Yuuya's safety, especially since they were the only two standing within their team. Before attempting to attack, he tells Masao that he believes in him, which he eventually does end up going down, causing Masao to finally make a move.

Fanon[]

The silent nature of Naoya combined with Masao’s understated expressiveness has led fans to re-imagine a deeper connection—a relationship where every glance, pause, and subtle action speaks volumes.

In many fanfictions, scenes are expanded where Masao is the one to break the silence, offering words of comfort and insight that draw Naoya out of his reserved shell.

Some fan works envision scenarios where the pressures of the supernatural elements in Persona force the two characters into a partnership that transcends friendship. These narratives explore themes such as trust, healing, and personal growth through the bond of romance.

Artwork and fan edits often highlight imagined moments—like a shared smile in a dimly lit corridor or a quiet conversation after a day of battles—that suggest an intimacy beyond what is shown in the official material.
