Nariel is the femslash ship between Nani Pelekai and Ariel from the Lilo & Stitch and The Little Mermaid fandoms.
Canon[]
Nani and Ariel have never met in canon, since both of them are from different Disney movies (universes).
Many fans have drawn connections between the two characters because they both have important relationships to the ocean. Ariel, as a mermaid, has spent the majority of her life in the ocean. Nani, as a native Hawaiian, has grown up surfing the waves of the Pacific Ocean. They both have suffered loss in their life, with Ariel losing her mother to a boating accident and Nani losing both of her parents to a car accident.
Although their personalities are vastly different, fans like imagining the interactions between them. Ariel is more naïve, whereas Nani has had to grow up quickly to care for herself and her younger sister. Ariel is the more optimistic compared to Nani's pessimistic. Their differences in personality would likely balance each other out in a perfect way.
Fanon[]
Nariel is not such a popular ship within each of the characters' respective fandoms. The ship is often overshadowed by the characters' most popular ships, such as Eriel and Nanvid. This is because crossover ships are usually less popular than the canon ships. However, this is one of Nani's most popular crossover ships. Testament to this are the many fan-made works for the ship online. Such an example of this is the fan-made video made for the ship, titled "Tell me if you feel it too." In it, Ariel meets Nani as a mermaid, as Nani is surfing. Ariel is fascinated by her. So Nani gets closer, and as they talk they get closer to one another. Ariel then goes to see Nani dance, and she falls harder for her. But Nani finds herself in trouble when having conflicting feelings between David having a crush on her and Ariel too. Nani ends up choosing Ariel, as she reciprocates her feelings for her. And although it seems like David is mad at this, it's later revealed that he's supportive of the two. And the video ends with Nani and Ariel dancing together happily.
This is a common theme in the fan works for the ship, Ariel usually being the one in Lilo & Stitch's universe. She usually meets Nani in her mermaid form first, and then it's shown in her human form. Some other fan arts, though, show Nani in mermaid form. Some wholesome fan art (which make up most fan works for the ship) include Lilo, and sometimes Stitch accompanying Nani and Ariel as they walk in the beach or spending an afternoon together there. Sometimes Ariel forms a friendly bond with Lilo too, which makes Nani even more fond of her. Fans of the ship love this aspect of their dynamic, as well as the fact that the ocean it's very prominent in both of their stories.
