— Case 3-5: Bridge to the Turnabout

Narumitsu is the slash ship between Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth from the Ace Attorney fandom.

Canon[]

Early years[]

Phoenix and Edgeworth met due to being in the same class in elementary school. Their friendship begun after Phoenix was accused of stealing Edgeworth's lunch money. The teacher at the time called for a class trial, during which most of his classmates called Phoenix guilty. Edgeworth, who dreamed of becoming an attorney like his father, defended Phoenix as there was no evidence he stole the money. After this trial Edgeworth, Phoenix, and Larry Butz (who, despite being the true culprit, also stood up for Phoenix) became close friends. Although Edgeworth does not remember this trial, it had a profound impact on Phoenix and is a core part of why he became a lawyer.

Unfortunately, this budding friendship was cut short due to the DL-6 incident, during which Edgeworth suffered the traumatic events of his father's murder. Edgeworth transferred schools with little to no warning (in the anime, which Shu Takumi consulted on, Edgeworth was explicitly taken in by Manfred von Karma).

Edgeworth later becomes a prosecutor at the young age of 20. Although he's touted as a prodigy, there are rumours about him potentially forging evidence and other similar unethical practices to secure a perfect win record. Phoenix, an arts student at the time, sees Edgeworth referred to in the media as a 'demon prosecutor'. Remembering the time Edgeworth defended him as a child, Phoenix attempts to get in contact, but is ultimately unsuccessful. He therefore decides to pursue a career in law himself in order to "help and save" Edgeworth by confronting him in court.

Case 1-2: Turnabout Sisters[]

Phoenix and Edgeworth first interact during Phoenix's second trial. Phoenix defends Maya Fey, who is accused of murdering her older sister (who is also Phoenix's mentor) Mia. When Detective Gumshoe informs Phoenix he'll be facing Edgeworth in court, Phoenix thinks of Edgeworth negatively, referring to him as a cold, heartless machine.[1]

During the first day of the trial, Edgeworth and Phoenix do not give much indication of the past connection. However, following an infamous cross-examination where Edgeworth presents an "updated autopsy report", the player, as Phoenix, has the option to accuse Edgeworth of being a sham, though the judge reprimands this[2]. As the trial progresses, Edgeworth and Phoenix argue back and forth, with Edgeworth seemingly having an answer to all of Phoenix's contradictions. After a hard fought battle, Phoenix manages to prove contradictions in the witnesses testimony, which leads to the trial being extended for a further day of investigation. At this point, Phoenix and Edgeworth show a high level of tension[3].

During his investigation, Phoenix discovers the true culprit is Redd White, who Mia had been investigating for blackmail. Phoenix confronts White directly, which ultimately leads to Phoenix being accused of Mia's murder, though the charges against Maya are dropped. After he's arrested, Phoenix decides to defend himself as the trial continues. Before the second day of the trial, Edgeworth approaches Phoenix in the defendant lobby, promising to secure a guilty verdict no matter what. Specifically, Edgeworth asserts that Phoenix won't get any special treatment from him, indicating their interconnected history for the first time[4]. Phoenix comes close to losing the trial, but thanks to the intervention of Mia (who Maya channels using her abilities as a spirit medium), Phoenix finds the decisive evidence he needs. As a result, the Judge declares him "not guilty", and Phoenix walks free, also breaking Edgeworth's perfect win record.

Case 1-3: Turnabout Samurai[]

Edgeworth and Phoenix face off again in the trial of Will Powers for the murder of Jack Hammer. During the early stages of the investigation, Phoenix and Maya run into Detective Gumshoe, who informs them that Edgeworth has not been taking his loss against Phoenix well[5]. During a later part of the the case, Gumshoe explains that Edgeworth was so angry (due to uncooperative witnesses) he crushed a cup of scalding hot coffee[6].

During the trial itself, Edgeworth's dislike of the witness Wendy Oldbag was such that he did not protest Phoenix's suggestion that the woman was the killer. By the third day of the trial, where Will Powers' guilt becomes increasingly unlikely, Edgeworth has a crisis of conscience. He forces the final witness, Dee Vasquez, to testify about what she had done after finding the body, despite this information being detrimental to the prosecution. Phoenix is unsure of Edgeworth's motivations for doing this, though theorises that Edgeworth has also realised Vasquez's guilt[7]. This allows Phoenix to expose a final contradiction that implicates Vasquez as the real killer. Phoenix and Edgeworth work together during this sequence, building on each other's theories to come to the ultimate truth.

After the trial concludes, Edgeworth approaches Phoenix in the defendant's lobby, where they have their first full conversation in 15 years. Phoenix thanks Edgeworth for his help during the trial[8], and they have the following exchange.

Edgeworth: ...Wright. I must say, I hadn't expected to meet you again after all these years.

Maya: Meet "again"...?

Edgeworth: However. In retrospect, it would have been better had we not met. Thanks to you, I am saddled with unnecessary... feelings.

Phoenix: Unnecessary feelings?

Edgeworth: Yes. Unease... and uncertainty.

Phoenix: Aren't those kind of necessary?

Edgeworth: They only serve to get in my way. You listen to me, Phoenix Wright. Don't ever show your face in front of me again. That's what I came here to tell you.

Both Powers and Maya express confusion about Phoenix and Edgeworth's history together, though Phoenix refuses to elaborate[9].

Case 1-4: Turnabout Goodbyes[]

The two meet again in Turnabout Goodbyes, as Edgeworth is accused of murdering Robert Hammond. Phoenix takes it upon himself to become Edgeworth’s lawyer and defend him in court, facing off against the legendary prosecutor Manfred von Karma, who was once Edgeworth's mentor.

When Phoenix first visits him in the detention centre, Edgeworth says he didn't want Phoenix to see him like this[10]. Initially, Edgeworth refuses to let Phoenix defend him. At first he says his reason for this is because of Phoenix's inexperience, and the legendary status of von Karma, however it is later revealed that the real reason is due to the connection with the DL-6 incident[11]. When Phoenix discovers that the victim in this case served as the attorney for Yanni Yogi, the bailiff accused of murdering Edgeworth's father, Edgeworth finally agrees to let him defend him in court.

Phoenix would have lost the trial, with Edgeworth even receiving a guilty verdict, if not for a last minute interruption by Larry Butz. Ultimately, Phoenix is able to prove Miles is innocent for Hammond's murder. However, as connection to the DL-6 incident becomes clear, Edgeworth tells Phoenix about the depth of his trauma, explaining how he has nightmares that he was the one who shot his own father. As the statute of limitations is at its end, Edgeworth interrupts the trial to 'confess' to the murder of his father. Phoenix, though, is able to prove that Manfred von Karma was the real killer all along, finally freeing Edgeworth of this guilt.

After the trial is over, Edgeworth struggles to thank Phoenix properly in words[12], though they appear to be in a better place. Larry Butz also reveals that he was the one who stole Edgeworth's lunch money, all those years ago. They exchange some friendly banter as a result[13].

Rise from the Ashes[]

Rise from the Ashes was a new case added to coincide with Ace Attorney's international release on the Nintendo DS. As a result, it was written after the rest of the original trilogy had been released, though it fits chronologically just after Turnabout Goodbyes.

Phoenix defends the Chief Prosecutor Lana Skye after she is accused of murdering Bruce Goodman, whose body happened to be found in Edgeworth's red sports car. Edgeworth is still forced to prosecute the case, though shows a greater willingness to together and provides helpful information during the investigation phase. Phoenix notices that Edgeworth has a custom chess set in his office, which appears to be based on their appearances[14].

Over the course of the trial, Phoenix is forced to expose Edgeworth for using forged evidence in past trials. Although Edgeworth did not know this evidence was forged at the time[15][16], as this was orchestrated by Skye and Damon Gant, the chief of police, he is still put under heavy scrutiny, especially revolving the SL-9 Incident, which was Edgeworth's first high profile case. As he comes under increasing pressure, Phoenix and Ema Sky walk in on Edgeworth writing a letter of resignation. Phoenix shows concern for Edgeworth[17], noting his tendency to hide his feelings[18]. While Edgeworth shows signs of depression, Phoenix takes the resignation letter with him.

Phoenix and Edgeworth work together during the final day of trial, even going as far as to collaborate with each other during trial recesses. Their mutual pursuit of the truth results in them managing to expose Gant's corruption, securing Skye a not guilty verdict. However, Edgeworth still has huge doubts about himself, and expresses that he may have turned to corrupt methods himself given enough time. Skye suggests that Edgeworth's case is different, due to him having the support of Phoenix[19].

Phoenix and Edgeworth appear to leave things on an uncertain note, with Phoenix suggesting he'll face Edgeworth in court again[20]. However, during the end credits sequence, it's revealed that Edgeworth disappeared immediately after this.

Justice for All[]

Over the course of the game, Phoenix is vague whenever Edgeworth is mentioned. In Turnabout Bigtop, during an interaction with Franziska von Karma, Phoenix finally reveals that he believes Edgeworth to be dead - most likely by suicide. Following the trial from Rise from the Ashes, Edgeworth disappeared, simply leaving behind the note: "Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth chooses death". Phoenix is clearly incredibly upset by this, and can barely stand to hear Edgeworth's name, specifically asking Maya to not bring him up[21]. Though Franziska does not think Edgeworth is dead, she blames Phoenix for everything that happened, revealing that avenging him is her central motivation.

Edgeworth returns during Farewell, My Turnabout, where Phoenix is blackmailed into defending Matt Engarde by the assassin Shelly De Killer, who has kidnapped Maya as a hostage. Phoenix acts distressed by their reunion[22], and by Edgeworth's apparent nonchalance. Edgeworth responds that this hatred is "one-sided". Phoenix also misinterprets Edgeworth's rationale for disappearing to be due to losing his perfect win record, which causes him to be angry enough to wish that Edgeworth had stayed dead[23].

In an attempt to give Phoenix an advantage during the trial, De Killer shoots Franziska in the shoulder, causing her to be hospitalised. As a result, Edgeworth is forced to step in as the prosecutor for the case. With Maya's situational critical, Phoenix eventually informs him of her kidnapping, as well as his own blackmail. When finding out about De Killer's involvement, Edgeworth mobilises the police force to search for her. The two briefly work together to investigate Engarde's residence.

During the final trial, Edgeworth and Phoenix work together desperately to try and prolong the trial, aiming to buy time for the police to locate Maya and free Phoenix from his blackmail. They put their trust in one another, and with some last minute break throughs thanks to Detective Gumshoe and Franziska, they're able to get to the bottom of the case, and Matt Engarde is declared guilty.

Once the case is over and Maya is safe, Phoenix and Edgeworth speak in the courthouse. Edgeworth reveals his motivations for leaving for a year, including how Phoenix completely shattered his world view. Phoenix, for his part, tells Edgeworth he felt betrayed by his disappearance. Franziska is not ready to hear this answer, and leaves for the airport. The group celebrates together in the Gatewater Hotel, and Phoenix and Edgeworth appear to be in a better place.

Trials and Tribulations[]

During the game’s last case, “Bridge to the Turnabout”, Phoenix falls off a bridge and is unable to defend his client, Sister Iris of the Hazakurain Temple. Larry calls Edgeworth to inform him of the danger Phoenix is in, and Miles immediately books a flight to go and see Wright.

While Phoenix was not in any danger, he asked Edgeworth to defend Iris in court, giving him his attorney’s badge and magatama. When Iris asks Edgeworth what Phoenix is to him in the 3DS HD remake and onwards, he responds with that he is “a very dear and indispensable friend”. Another interesting thing to note is that when Edgeworth presents an incorrect profile (one other than Phoenix) during a Psyche-Lock session with Iris, Iris will mention a deep dark secret that Edgeworth is hiding and he seems shocked that she knows about it. Iris also says that it "takes one to know one." While we never find out more about this, some people believe that Iris could sense Edgeworth also harbors feelings for Phoenix, like herself.

During the investigation and first court trial, Miles figures out how hard a life of a defense attorney is, and gains a little more respect for Wright. After the trial and after his quick recovery, Phoenix meets up with Miles, thanking and complimenting his skills in the trial.

Day 2 of the Investigation takes a dark turn when an earthquake hit Hazakura Temple. Miles’ biggest fear being earthquakes, Phoenix immediately thinks of the danger Edgeworth could be in and rushes over to Dusky Bridge. While Edgeworth is alright, his noticeable fear of earthquakes is present in his behavior, blaming himself for letting Iris slip away because he was passed out.

After sometime, the two meet in the garden, where Edgeworth talks intimately about his relationship with earthquakes and DL-6, opening up to him. During this encounter, Wright even thinks of hugging Edgeworth, but holds back. If you keep presenting profiles to Edgeworth, he’ll start being comedic with Wright after enough profiles have been presented.

Apollo Justice[]

While Edgeworth is not directly named in AJ, Phoenix reveals in DD that during the seven-year gap he went overseas to help him with legal work as well as to study the legal systems there.[24]

Miles Edgeworth: Investigations[]

Similarly, Phoenix is never referred to by name in the spin-off, but Edgeworth does make vague references to him, even remarking that his usage of the word “contradiction” is Phoenix rubbing off on him. He also makes numerous references to the defense attorney in the unofficial fan-translation of the 2nd game, referring to him as “that man” or “a certain friend”, and attributing the cause of the destruction of his own “self-centered sense of justice” to Phoenix. At the end of the game Edgeworth has a little speech and refers to Phoenix by saying “The sight of that man still shines brilliantly in my eyes...”[25] [26]

Dual Destinies[]

When Phoenix mentions going to Europe, he reveals that he went to study the legal systems there, and would help him with some cases from time to time. Phoenix actually became a lawyer again because Edgeworth asked him to return to help him prove Blackquill's innocence and put an end to the “dark age of the law”, meaning that for the second time in his life, Phoenix became an attorney for Edgeworth. While Edgeworth only appears in the last case of the game, the trial itself is full of characters making quips about how close the two lawyers are. Even Fulbright, comments that they exemplify the phrase “close enough to argue.”

Later, Phoenix needles Edgeworth about his aesthetic sense weakening along with his eyesight (as of this game and onwards, he wears glasses) and Edgeworth is not amused. The Judge steps in to smooth things over, assuring Edgeworth that the defense is only concerned about his ocular health. When the trial is over, Athena comments on their “love-hate” relationship. Add it all up, and it seems that quite a few people in-game seem to regard the face-off between the two lawyers as a marital spat. A funny dialogue happens if you mess up in a certain part of the trial and are shown a back and forth between Edgeworth and Phoenix ending with Phoenix being told to “put a sock in it” and him replying with “Y-yes, Daddy” to Edgeworth. [27]

At the end of Dual Destinies Phoenix has realized that Edgeworth stepped in to speed up the process of getting him reinstated because it was too easy a process. Edgeworth had not mentioned this or tried to take credit for it, but he admits he has a lot of debts to pay up to Phoenix. He says the same in the end credits, since he now owes Phoenix again for helping acquit Blackquill, but swears to repay him someday (while doing his head-tilted half smile pose). There is also the bit where Phoenix tells Edgeworth that the frown lines on his forehead are getting too deep and he should smile more; Edgeworth tells him (while smirking) that he will think about it.

Spirit of Justice[]

Miles implies he has seen some of Trucy's shows, and she leans on him while asleep on an airplane in a cutscene implying them to be quite close.[28] He even says later when Trucy is found to have stowed away in his bag that she pulled the old sneak into Edgeworth's bag trick, implying she has done something like that before.[29] Miles and Phoenix also share living accommodations while in Khura'in. Both Phoenix and Edgeworth share some fun back and forth moments when investigating during the last case of the trial. If you ever ask Edgeworth if he has “any ideas”, he grumbles about Phoenix leaving the states without telling him. Phoenix asks if Edgeworth missed him, which Edgeworth characteristically denies. They both speculate how much fun it would be to sightsee in Khura’in if they were not there on business, although Edgeworth teasingly adds that Phoenix is the last person he would want to go with.

Later on Phoenix makes fun of Edgeworth for his gaudy taste and his grey hair, asking if he wants to dye it black. Investigating anywhere at the Bazaar will have Edgeworth wax sentimental about how he and Phoenix are finally investigating a case “side by side”, only for Phoenix to tease him for being so sentimental. Edgeworth goes out of his way to help out in the last investigation, even chartered a jet for the entire Wright Anything Agency to go to Khura’in (a call back to another time he did this in T&T), and even pulled rank with all the investigators and legal officials in Khura’in to help Phoenix. At the beginning of their segment together, Phoenix confesses that he would have been “totally lost” without Edgeworth’s help.

Other Media[]

In the anime, both intros heavily focus on the relationship between the two. The first OP showcases a sort of golden chain that binds the two together, not only a symbol of court, but also a symbol of their relationship. The second showcasing, again, the contrast between the two, but since their relationship has grown, they are both seen smiling at each other while facing in court. Something that was added in the anime is the show Signal Samurai and how it connects them together. Phoenix keeps his signal blue keychain and never lets it go as shown by how worn out it is. While Miles denies it at first he never let his signal red keychain go either but kept it hidden away until it can be seen on his desk years later. He even takes it with him after writing the “suicide” note while saying he was sorry to leaving for the second time, addressing this to Phoenix.

The second season shows Miles’ face softening in a smile when he notices Phoenix behind him in the intro. In “Turnabout Express - Last Trial”, Gumshoe cries tears of joy at the two working together to find the truth to this case. Before the train blows up, Phoenix can be seen looking back into the car at Miles on the screen, and Miles smiles at him. In “Sound the Turnabout Melody”, it is a flashback with Phoenix, Larry, and Miles as kids. Phoenix still has his signal blue keychain showing he has not forgotten about Miles, and even blushes when Larry sees he still has it. It is shown that Phoenix wants to try to send a message to Miles, and in the end he does. Another flashback is shown of Miles and Phoenix together before Miles left, and they both smile and blush at each other. At the end of the last trial, Edgeworth goes to shake hands with Phoenix, but Phoenix takes his hand in both of his while saying he could not done it without his help, and holds onto his hand for quite a bit while they both stare at each other with unreadable but soft expressions on their faces.. Even after Larry and the others interrupt their moment together, they keep holding hands for a bit longer, signifying their gratefulness for one another.

In the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Official Casebook, Volume 2: The Miles Edgeworth Files, Miles can be seen looking up at the stars wistfully as they take the form of Phoenix’s profile, and he thinks to himself, “For some reason, whenever I’m tired, I’m reminded of you”.[30] In another panel, Edgeworth dresses up as Phoenix to help find him and the conversion goes like, starting with Phoenix saying, “D-Don’t tell me, Edgeworth you love m...” and Edgeworth interrupting him with “Don’t finish that sentence”.[31]

In Marvel vs. Capcom 3, they make a brief cameo in She-Hulk’s ending, the two are terrified of her after she breaks a desk with a gavel and jump into each others arms.[32]

The pair has an official set of matching rings [33] made by Material Crown and more recently they've released a set of necklaces as well. [34]

Fanon[]

Narumitsu is one of, if not the most, popular ships in the entire Ace Attorney fandom. The development team, after finishing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, quickly found out how popular it was with fans and the BL community and were pleasantly surprised. Many think the ship could become canon, due to their "undeniable chemistry" making a delightful Yin-Yang pair (prosecutor and defense attorney, red and blue, demon and angel, etc.).

Around 2015, an event called Narumitsu Week was started that celebrates the pairing by giving each day (July 1st—July 7th) a different theme, for which people make fanart and/or fanfiction. It originally started out on Tumblr, but it's been on Twitter as well since 2019. The 3rd of July is also known unofficially as Narumitsu Day, because “7” in Japanese is Nanatsu and “3” is Mitsu, for Naruhodou Ryuuichi (Phoenix’s Japanese name) and Mitsurugi Reiji (Miles’), respectively.

In 2020, AO3 user sophie_inthesky wrote an extensive 57,019-word essay detailing all canon evidence from the games and other related media.

On April 1st 2022, fans banded together to get a pixelated artwork of the pairing on r/place 2022 at the coordinates (1315, 93). They are seen wearing wedding rings and have hearts surrounding them (one for Phoenix in the bisexual flag's colors, one for Miles in the asexual flag's colors, and a red one between them).

  1. Gumshoe: Whoa! And you call yourself a lawyer, pal!? About four years ago, this Edgeworth guy became a prosecutor at the age of 20! Everyone says he's a genius. Surprised you don't know him! Phoenix:(Of course I know him... I was just playing dumb. He's a cold, heartless machine who'll do anything to get a "guilty" verdict! There are rumors of back-alley deals and forged evidence...)
  2. Phoenix:Mr. Edgeworth... I've heard there's nothing you won't do to get your verdict... What reason could you possibly have had to request a second autopsy report? Judge: Mr. Wright! The defense will refrain from personal attacks on the prosecution! Edgeworth:No matter, Your Honor... Mr. Wright. Say what you will, the evidence in this report is undeniable.
  3. Edgeworth: M-my, what a convenient little setup... but it's too late... Phoenix:"Too late"? I suppose you'd like it if it was too late, wouldn't you... After all, it was you who hid the presence of the other man from this court! Edgeworth:Oof! Upstart... amateur...! T-these accusations are... ludicrous!
  4. Maya: Why... Why!? How can you torment an innocent person like this!? Edgeworth: "Innocent"...? How can we know that? The guilty will always lie, to avoid being found out. There's no way to tell who is guilty and who is innocent! All that I can hope to do is get every defendant declared "guilty"! So I make that my policy. Phoenix: Edgeworth... You've changed. Maya: Hmm? Phoenix! You know him!? Edgeworth: Don't expect any special treatment, Phoenix Wright.
  5. Gumshoe: Hey pal, you know Prosecutor Edgeworth is all upset, and it's your fault! I saw him sipping tea and staring gloomily out the window!
  6. Phoenix: How is Edgeworth doing, anyway? Gumshoe: Mr. Edgeworth is outta control! He was in the waiting room and he crushed this paper cup with hot, hot coffee in it. Phoenix: Whoa... Gumshoe: Talk about burns, pal! Maya: Wow! The fury of Edgeworth!
  7. Maya: Nick! Why did Edgeworth...? Phoenix: Who knows? He probably realized she did it, too. Maya: But... but! Wasn't he the one that said he always gets a guilty verdict...? After all that... Phoenix: (Edgeworth...)
  8. Edgeworth: ... Phoenix: ... Edgeworth: ... Say something, Wright. I'm not good at small talk. Phoenix: Huh? What? ... Umm... that was too bad, Edgeworth! Edgeworth: You don't waste any time gloating, do you? Phoenix: No... I really wanted to thank you. Vasquez would have gotten away if you hadn't stepped in.
  9. Will: Umm... Mr. Wright? Was... that guy your friend? Maya: What? Friends? As if! They're rivals! Rivals! Right, Nick? Phoenix: For now we are... I guess. Maya: Huh!? Why do I get the feeling I'm missing something? C'mon, Nick! Tell me! What's the deal with you and Edgeworth?
  10. Edgeworth: ... I hoped you wouldn't come. I didn't want you to see me. Not like this. Phoenix: (I didn't want to see you like this, either. Believe me.)
  11. Edgeworth: Regardless, I don't want you involved in this. You in particular I cannot ask to do this.
  12. Phoenix: So, it's finally over, Edgeworth. Edgeworth: ... Wright. Phoenix: Yeah? Edgeworth: ... I... I'm not sure how to say this. Maya: I know! I know! Try "thank you." Edgeworth: I... I see. ... Th-thank you, Wright. Phoenix: Y-you're welcome. Maya: I think you could have done better than that! Edgeworth: Nngh... S-sorry... I'm not good at this sort of thing. Maya: You got a lot to learn, Edgeworth!
  13. Phoenix: Grr... Where does that leave me!? I became a defense attorney because of what you two did! Edgeworth: Well, you have always been something of an insufferable emotionalist. Butz: Yeah! And you get worked up too easily, too! Phoenix: D-death! The death sentence for both of you! Man, if only I had known, I'd have become a prosecutor! Edgeworth: The same goes for me, only the other way around... For the longest time, I thought that I might have killed my own father. I thought I might be a criminal. I became a prosecutor in part to punish myself. If I had known the truth, I might have become a defense attorney after all. Phoenix: Edgeworth... Edgeworth: Want to switch, Wright?
  14. {| class="mw-collapsible fandom-table" | colspan="2" |Ema: Hey, a chessboard! Phoenix: I'm not too up on my chess but it looks like Blue's in a bit of a tight spot. Ema: The Red Knights have surrounded the Blue Pawn... Phoenix: Huh? Ema: Those horses are mounted knights. Their swords have really sharp "edges!" And check out that poor pawn, his head is kind of spiky... Kind of reminds me of you. Mr. Edgeworth must be an avid chess player! What's wrong, Mr. Wright? Phoenix: (Edges... surrounding a pawn with spiky hair... Nah... It's nothing.) |}
  15. Edgeworth: In truth, I used slightly more... extreme methods than normal. We were dealing with a vicious murderer. If I let him go, the blood would be on my hands. We won our guilty verdict, and the killer was executed. Phoenix: Wait, you didn't... Edgeworth: Of course not! I didn't touch the evidence. Yes, I will do anything in my power to win a trial. However... I do have a code, and I follow it faithfully.
  16. Edgeworth: There's no excuse for what I've done. Two years ago, I used false evidence to obtain a guilty verdict. That's what it all breaks down to, and nothing I do can erase that fact. Phoenix: But you didn't know, did you? I mean, that the evidence was falsified. Edgeworth: The Police Department and the Prosecutor's Office share a bond of trust. If that bond is broken, we stand to lose everything. The Police Department's error is my error, my responsibility as the prosecutor in charge. That fact remains the same no matter what excuses I might have.
  17. {| class="mw-collapsible fandom-table" | colspan="2" |Phoenix: Are you up for the trial tomorrow? Edgeworth: Hmph. First last year's trial, and now this one. It seems all you do is worry about me. To be honest, you're getting on my nerves. |}
  18. Phoenix: (That's Edgeworth for you... Always trying to hide his real feelings.)
  19. Lana: You said, "in order to fight crime on my own, I'd need a 'weapon.'" That may be true, but think back to today's trial. You weren't alone. Edgeworth: ...! Lana: You were working together with Mr. Wright. And because of that partnership, you were able to present evidence that otherwise would have gone undiscovered. Isn't that right, Mr. Wright? Phoenix: Huh? What? Oh, uh... yeah. (What is this, a pop quiz?)
  20. Edgeworth: If you'll excuse me... there are still some loose ends that need wrapping up. Take care, Chief Prosecutor. Phoenix: Edgeworth! What will you do now? Edgeworth: ... Phoenix: Well, whatever you do, just remember. You can let what happened kill the prosecutor in you, or you can let it help you grow. In the end, it's up to you. Edgeworth: I know... It seems I owe you my thanks too, Wright. But what I face now... is my problem. Phoenix: Edgeworth... I'll be waiting for you in court. Edgeworth: ... Farewell.
  21. Phoenix: Maya, I already told you this once. Don't make me do it again. Don't bring up his name in front of me again, OK?
  22. Phoenix: I... I never wanted to see you again! Edgeworth: I think that's enough of a "warm welcome" for someone you haven't seen in a year...
  23. Phoenix: To think your motivation for prosecuting trials was so selfish... It'd been better for everyone if you never came back from the dead, Edgeworth!
