Battle for Dream Island[]

After Match responds with disgust at Needle falling onto a cake, Pencil says that she loves "needies", likely making fun of Needle's hated nickname of "needy". Needle slaps her for this, and then is promptly thrown away by Announcer, as she is part of a different team.

Other than this, Needle and Pencil do not interact directly in BFDI because they are both in different teams and don't have any pre-established relationship other than that one line.

Battle for Dream Island Again[]

However, both share traits of being (debatably) athletic, as Pencil prides herself on her strength in BFDIA, saying that the reason why Ruby couldn't get the HPRC out of the glue was that she was too weak.

Needle is shown to be athletic through her fast running skills, mentioned by Ice Cube and also shown to the viewer. It is also mentioned in her official character guide bio, which states that she's faster than Firey.

While the two were on relatively good terms by the time of BFDIA 2, and arguably good terms in BFDI, as she warns Needle (along with the other Puffball riders) to watch out for a wild Leafy, they are shown to be on worse terms by the time of BFDIA 6 when Freesmart and W.O.A.H. Bunch are put up against each other.

Pencil's strength is also displayed here, as she puts up a good fight against Needle, who, again, is previously shown to be athletic.

A big contrast in their characters is that, while Pencil seems rather prideful of her strength, as seen in BFDIA 5e, Needle doesn't flaunt her strength or athleticism, instead using it to help her friends, such as in TPOT 2 when she runs up on the tower of blocks to help with stacking.

Post-BFDIA 6, the two are on much worse terms as they were fighting each other, with Pencil starting the fight by kicking Rocky and Needle going after in response to that. Their fighting also gets much more focus than any of the other pairings between W.O.A.H. Bunch and Freesmart.

When Yellow Face asks if Needle needs to kill someone, she says she does, using the scribble/"katana" given to her by him to attack Pencil. Even though all of the W.O.A.H. Bunch members have the same tool with different labels (as said by Yellow Face), Needle seems to be doing the best, having a bit of a lead on Pencil.

Pencil stops the fight, saying that she's "had enough of this", implying that she's been holding herself back, before pushing Needle to the ground.

She pins Needle to the ground by standing on her head, and she seems proud and/or smug about it, while Needle calls to Spongy for help.

After W.O.A.H. Bunch and Freesmart finish fighting, W.O.A.H. Bunch also tries to scare Freesmart so they can't fall asleep and win the challenge, which counts as an indirect interaction between Needle and Pencil, as Needle is one of the W.O.A.H. Bunch members telling Freesmart about Evil Leafy to scare them.

She also calls them "silly Freesmart babies", and laughs at their scared reactions with Coiny before Evil Leafy actually appears.

Freesmart, along with Pencil, seem happy when Evil Leafy appears and starts targetting W.O.A.H. Bunch instead of them, with Ruby even laughing at them because they're getting wet.

After the teams join forces together, becoming one team (THE B.F.D.I), Needle seems happy to work with Pencil along with Nickel while making drawings to advertise the ice cream their team is selling.

In BFDIA 12, Ice Cube gets eliminated and the remaining FreeSmarters needs to pick another contestant to join the alliance to replace Ice Cube, Pencil prefers to choose Needle, dismissively referring to her as "that thing with the nickname.", then Needle joins FreeSmart. Later, when the FreeSmarters hide behind Spongy to avoid the clothing store explosion, Needle tries to join them but Pencil excludes her, stating that Needle wasn't a full member yet. Pencil tells her she needs to make a sacrifice to be promoted within the alliance. Later in the episode, she sacrifices Coiny in order to get promoted to member, as promised by Pencil.

In the next episode, Needle approaches Pencil to ask about the perks of being a FreeSmart member, referencing her recent promotion due to a sacrifice she made. Pencil, however, questions when this promotion occurred, as she was dead at the time and didn’t witness it. She asks Book for confirmation, but since Book was also dead at the time, Pencil dismisses Needle's claim and tells her to come back when she actually makes a sacrifice. Needle, frustrated, slaps her.

In BFDIA 14, Needle figuratively and literally carries Pencil until she is able to use anti-poison to unpoison her. Then they (along with Ruby and Book) complete the mini challenges together. Afterwards, Pencil steps up to sing a lullaby for Puffball, but as she opens her mouth, her mind goes blank, unsure of what to sing. In a moment of panic, she turns to Needle for help. Needle, without hesitation, sings a heartfelt lullaby that moves Puffball to tears. Touched by Needle's beautiful performance, Puffball allows them to advance. As the platform with Needle and Pencil rises to the bunk beds, Pencil excitedly cheers and hugs Needle, thanking her for saving the moment. They both climb into bed, Needle’s lullaby replaying softly through the speakers. Puffball announces their team as safe, securing third place in the challenge.

In BFDIA 15, Needle prepares to rehydrate a caterpillar-like creature but is interrupted by Pencil, who takes over, emphasizing her status as a "full FreeSmarter." Pencil completes the task successfully, earning cheers from Book and Ruby. While the mission succeeds, Needle feels disheartened, recognizing that her comment implies she isn't fully regarded as part of the team. Pencil attempts to shoot Pin with the Shrink Ray, but Pin skillfully dodges each of her attacks. Amid the chaos, Pencil accidentally hits Needle with the ray. Pencil acknowledges hitting Needle and not Book, even though Needle isn’t on her team.

The next episode, Pencil calls all FreeSmart members to regroup and shares a celebratory high-five with Needle upon her arrival. A while later, Pencil seems upset at the prospect of Needle switching from FreeSmart, implying she respects her more than she lets on. She contradictorily states that Needle can make her own decisions, before immediately making the decision to stay on FreeSmart for her. Later in the episode, as they're driving through the desert, Book mentions that the journey reminds her of a road trip, prompting Pencil to suggest playing some music. However, when the blaring, awful music from the radio makes her cringe, she quickly turns it off. Pencil then suggests that Needle should sing for them, and Needle agrees. Later, Needle immediately complains about the oppressive heat. In response, Pencil cranks up the van’s air conditioning to provide some relief. Pencil praises Needle for revealing the location of W.O.A.H. Bunch's trinket and hints at a potential promotion for her. She instructs Needle to boost her, and Needle throws her partway up the dirt tower. However, when Pin urges Needle to stop, she switches her sticky note again, races up the tower, and shoves Pencil back down, covering her face in dirt. In response, Pencil retracts her praise and cancels Needle's promotion. Pencil praises Needle when she saves her and Book from being crushed by the FreeSmart SuperVan.

In BFDIA 17, Needle and Pencil hug when it's revealed they are the bottom two at the elimination ceremony. Needle sadly looks at Pencil as she is eliminated. Later in the episode, Needle and Pencil look at each other briefly before Pencil tosses her Leafy Detector towards Needle to help her find Evil Leafy.

In the next episode, Pencil is shown to genuinely really care for Needle, being very upset when she dies in the challenge, and when Ice Cube asks her why she is so upset as Needle isn't even officially in the alliance, Pencil angrily snaps back that Ice Cube isn't either. She then travels all the way back to the Recovery Center to recover Needle, and when she is confused as to why Pencil went to the effort for this, Pencil says it's because even if she isn't an alliance member, she's totally awesome, displaying that she genuinely sees Needle as a close friend.

In BFDIA 23, Pencil happily exclaims that Needle is safe during the Cake at Stake. Later during the race to "Dream Island", Pencil stops Needle because she wants her to do her challenge which at first bugs Needle because she's in last place and needs to catch up. Needle doesn't want to do Pencil's challenge because she wants to win on her own, but Pencil says that's not going to work, stating that she can't win if she keeps pushing people who want to help away. Pencil then explains that The Alliance was created to show that you can have friends in the game. Needle then agrees to do Pencil's challenge, and as a reward Pencil gives her a ride in the FreeSmart SuperVan.

Island Dream for Battle/IDFB[]

Needle has a one-off line mentioning Freesmart, which can be counted as her (technically) mentioning Pencil.

Battle for Dream Island:The Power of Two[]

In TPOT 17, Pencil explains to Book that she has no friends left, quoting Needle being gone as an example.

Fanon[]

Before BFDIA 6, this ship was not at all popular because of their lack of interactions. However, BFDIA 6 gave the ship a big surge in popularity as the two are put against each other and also contrasted. Later on in the season of BFDIA, Pencil and Needle would join forces when Needle would join Freesmart. They would also have times where they'd be a duo together. The two would shortly form a friendship within these episodes and even after Pencil is eliminated, they still have a helpful bond since Pencil gives Needle the Leafy tracker.

Despite still not being a major ship in the BFDI fandom, it has a respectable number of fans, many of which enjoy the dynamic between the more (seemingly) soft-spoken yet still competitive Needle and the more confident and cocky Pencil. The focus on their battle specifically, and the scene of Pencil pinning Needle down, are very prominent moments that made lots of people start shipping it after BFDIA 6's release.
