Nenekasa is the het ship between Tsukasa Tenma and Nene Kusanagi from the Project SEKAI fandom.

Canon[]

Tsukasa and Nene are both part of Wonderlands x Showtime. They also both attend Kamiyama High School, with Tsukasa being a year older than Nene. The two are often seen interacting with one another. Nene often is cold to Tsukasa, picking playful fights and bickering while expressing her annoyance towards him, frequently calling him loud and such, often appearing tired by Tsukasa's dramatic attitude. Often, Nene's remarks result in Tsukasa stammering and angered while Nene remains smug and indifferent. However, Nene deeply cares about him and is often kind as well, showing her worry through unconventional means like insulting his intelligence.

The two are opposites of each other, as Tsukasa is a loud-mouth and outgoing person whereas Nene is more reserved and tends to stay quiet most of the time due to her shyness. Tsukasa calls her the troupe's diva while as Nene calls him an idiot who is headed for stardom. The two are the most responsible in the unit, to the point they share a kizuna/trust rank titled "Legal Guardian's Association". They both are similarly passionate and determined about theater.

Area Conversations[]

In the area conversation, "Tsukasa's Existence", Tsukasa mentions how Nene and Touya are in the same class together. He boasts about how Touya looks up to him and that he has given him countless life advice. Nene notes that it was a bad example from which one can learn. Tsukasa gets offended and tells Rui and Nene that would realize his value someday and would be grateful for his existence.

In an area conversation with all of Wonderlands x Showtime, the group is eating taiyaki. Tsukasa eats his taiyaki from the head and believes that the tail at the end is a good palette cleanser, while Nene is the opposite and prefers having bean paste left for her last bite. Rui notes that Tsukasa and Nene eat taiyaki in opposite ways but do many things similarly.

In an area conversation at Kamiyama High, Nene finds Tsukasa eating by himself. She asks him why he's eating by himself and if his class has decided to shun him. Tsukasa exclaims that there was no need to be rude and that he was only trying to eat an elegant lunch in peace. Nene tells him to not let it get to him. Tsukasa says it was his choice to eat alone, but is cut off by Nene walking away.

In an area conversation at Phoenix Wonderland, Tsukasa explains how he noticed that Nene could easily sing through entire shows. Nene calls him and Emu muscle heads and says she won't let them leave her behind. Tsukasa continues to tell her that he commends her efforts, and that Wonderlands x Showtime is counting on her. Nene, blushing, mutters that she knows and he doesn't have to point it out.

In an area conversation at Main Street, Nene quickly beats Tsukasa in an arcade game. Tsukasa complains about her not giving him a handicap and she replies saying he knew full well she was good at fighting games. Nene smiles smugly and asks him for another round with her eyes closed. Tsukasa's eyes widen in shock and he asks her if she can really do it blind. Nene gets embarrassed but agrees and asks him if he can sit out, saying she could handle an NPC without issues. The conversation ends with Tsukasa happily agreeing to watch her.

In an area conversation at Phoenix Wonderland, Nene's warming up her voice when Tsukasa approaches her in character, acting as a sick traveler, and asks her to cure an illness with her song. Nene gets startled at first, but she then smiles and notices that he's cueing for her to sing and decides to play along and sing for him.

In an area conversation at Main Street with Rui, Nene, and Tsukasa, Rui and Tsukasa spot Nene walking out of an arcade looking awfully happy. Nene explains how she got a higher score than expected on a dance game she doesn't play often, since she's gained more stamina. Tsukasa later says that he wants to try the game too, adding that it'll be a nice way to check if their training is paying off. Nene challenges Tsukasa to battle, telling him that she doesn't usually play this game, but there's no chance a novice like him could beat her. Tsukasa accepts the challenge while Rui giggles and says that this should be interesting.

Main Story[]

The two are first seen interacting in the 7th Chapter of their unit's Main Story, but not as much as they do in later chapters. Tsukasa boldly states that he needs a person who can do a show, not a robot to which Nene replies, asking if he has a problem with it. After giving the Robo-Nene a name, Tsukasa decides to say a few words to Nene. He tells her that they would be singing and dancing at the high quality that's worthy of being a star (himself). He says that the robot cannot dance unfortunately, which Nene insults him and says his eyes are at the back of his head. Nene shows him that Robo-Nene can indeed dance and perform despite being a robot. Tsukasa doesn't believe it at first, with Nene then proving him wrong and controlling the robot to dance which surprises Tsukasa since Robo-Nene could tap dance with such short legs. Tsukasa believes that it is not something you can do with that kind of body proportion, but Nene continues to show off to Tsukasa anyway to prove her point. Nene proves her point with dancing and Tsukasa still cannot believe it, stating that she must be able to sing too.

Nene sings, Tsukasa being amazed before making the assumption that she better not be playing the tape of some professional singer. Tsukasa worries that Nene may get more attention than he will, with Nene mentioning the fact that he doesn't have to include her if he's so worried about not standing out. He claims that he has no fears, with Robo-Nene getting closer to him with a questionable "hmmmmm?". He asks if she has something to say and she says that she does, saying that it was good for him that he had noticed. Rui giggles and points out that the two were getting along well. He finally accepts that Nene had good quality and was good enough to be on the stage, declaring her to be the fourth member. Tsukasa says that Nene should appreciate his generosity, Nene jokingly threatening him that she would target him with her laser beam.

In Chapter 8, Tsukasa brings a script. Rui is amazed that he wrote a script, while Nene is sarcastic towards this and asks if the script would show them his intelligence level. Tsukasa scoffs and points out that she keeps poking at him like that, then claiming that the script was too refined for Nene's understanding and that he wouldn't be explaining it to her. Nene throws it back, saying that his explanation would make it more confusing. Emu points out that the two were great friends now, with Rui agreeing that they were talking on the same level as each other. Tsukasa suggests aname for the troupe, being "Team Pegasus In The Sky!!" with Nene insulting it, calling it lame. He retorts, asking what other marvelous name there could be. Rui agrees with Nene, saying that it is pure lame.

In Chapter 9, Tsukasa is winded from practicing. Nene admits that she assumed that he was all talk but was impressed by how good his acting and dancing was. Then, Tsukasa states how harsh Rui is with Nene asking if he's hit a wall as she calls him Mr. Star. He yells, saying he, of course, has not hit a wall but does want a hint.

In Chapter 10, when they enter the SEKAI, Rui has captured a plushie that Tsukasa saw the other day and says that it was staying right there in SEKAI, not to the real world. Nene asks what he's going to do with more weird stuff like that, Tsukasa agreeing afterwards saying that she was right for once.

In Chapter 11, Tsukasa keeps on blabbering about how he will be a star and how he was ready for the road of stardom, Nene being annoyed by this and making a comment, asking if he ever got sick of talking about being a star. Tsukasa tells her that she can say what she wants, but he was feeling confident. He thanks Rui, Emu and Nene for being able to keep up and doing a great job despite "not amounting to his level of greatness". Nene states that she never recalls keeping up with him, but hopes that everyone would enjoy the show tomorrow too. He continues to boast, Nene saying that he's getting carried away again but Rui says to leave him be.

Later in the same chapter, they're about to be prepared for the show. Nene seems nervous and Tsukasa notices, asking if she was nervous since she had been quiet. She tries to deny it, but Tsukasa reassures her and says that everyone would be paying attention to him so she shouldn't waste her time on being tense since she was just "a weird robot". She's about to say, "He's such a..." but gets cut off by Rui, who says that Tsukasa may be encouraging Nene in his own way while Nene says that he is just being airheaded.

In Chapter 12, the two are acting together as "Prince Pegasus" and "Ne-Neh" the robbit. "Pegasus" asks if "Ne-Neh" would lend him a hand, to which she responds that he had slayed all the evil monsters and so the village was safe. She offers "Pegasus" a thank you hyper drink which will give him energy. He ends up drinking oil, to which the audience laughs. "Pegasus" plans on singing a song after the dragon comes, but "Ne-Neh" says that she can handle it and put the dragon to sleep. She starts singing, to which "Pegasus" is amazed by her singing and how the dragon was getting drowsy. However, the microphone gets muted and Nene-Robo starts to shut down. Tsukasa believes it is breaking down and attempts to buy some time, acting like it is apart of the performance, saying that the audience should cheer on "Ne-Neh" to put the dragon to sleep. Robo-Nene crashes and lands on Tsukasa. The show ends suddenly.

Tsukasa yells

Tsukasa yells at Nene

In Chapter 13, Tsukasa finally learns who Nene is. Nene remains quiet, while Emu tries to encourage her to not feel so down. Tsukasa gets upset, learning the reason (being that Nene forgot to charge the battery) as to why the show had been a failure. Nene apologizes, and Tsukasa then explodes and yells at her and saying that apologizing wouldn't do anything at all. Rui defends Nene and attempts to tell Tsukasa that Nene had no ill intentions of sabotaging the show as Tsukasa once again yells, asking about today's audience and being absolutely furious at the statement of "next time". He continues to shout about how they all wanted a successful show. Nene blames herself for the show's failure and tells herself how she could've done the show if she could show herself without using a robot. Tsukasa agrees, saying something was wrong from the start and that she shouldn't have used a robot to hide and talk without showing herself. He continues to yell at her, telling her to be quiet and insulting her for being shy and not being able to stand in front of people, also telling her that she should be able to stand in front of her audience. Nene apologizes again and runs off and starts to cry, and it seems that Tsukasa is slowly regretting his actions.

In Chapters 15-16, Tsukasa and Emu find Nene at the stage singing. Nene starts sweating nervously before shouting out that she was sorry and escapes on Robo-Nene. Emu and Tsukasa are surprised by this, Tsukasa telling Emu to run and chase after her. Nene continues to run away as Tsukasa and Emu continue to chase after her. Later, Tsukasa is calling out Nene's name to which Nene panics, realizing that the duo hadn't given up on finding her just yet. The duo finally catches Nene. She looks away from Emu, Tsukasa calling out Nene's name once more. Tsukasa is about to apologize, but Nene doesn't want to look at Tsukasa and he realizes that, saying that he said such horrible things and of course she didn't want to look at him. He tells her that she could stay right in place but he wanted to apologize for yesterday. Nene stays silent as Tsukasa continues on, saying he had been frustrated but should've known it was more frustrating for her that the show didn't go too well. He says that he wasn't focused on her feelings or everyone else's feelings and that he was extremely sorry. Nene continues to listen to what Tsukasa has to say.

Tsukasa and Nene reconciling

Tsukasa tells Nene that he wants to make a show that makes the audience smile, that seeing the audience would also make them (as in the whole troupe) smile too. That was the kind of amazing show that Tsukasa says he wants to put on. He asks Nene if he could do a show with her again. She seems hesitant at first, but agrees that she wants to do a show too. He's glad that Nene wants to do shows again and she tells Tsukasa how musical shows were always her dream. She talks about how she was the lead for a junior high casting but the performance hadn't gone well because she wasn't able to say her next line. This shows that the mess up in the show they had done the other day reminded her of that day in junior high. She tells Tsukasa that she agrees that she can't do a great show without facing the audience but she starts to tear up. Tsukasa tells her a quote about never failing if you don't do anything at all which is a quote from a star that he respects. He tells Nene that failure will always come to someone who is taking on a challenge but because they make progress like that, they get closer to creating the greatest show. He admits to Nene that he was wrong and asks her one more time to do a show with her, no matter what. She smiles softly and says she always wants to do a show too, her cheeks turning light red. She asks for Tsukasa to let her join to which he responds that they should both work together.

In Chapter 19, Nene says that the audience size was half of what it was last time. She says that she'll do her best and Tsukasa tells her that him and the others would be there to back her up incase anything had happened. He encourages Nene to give her all, to which Nene is shocked and says okay.

In Chapter 20, Tsukasa asks Nene and Rui what they were going to do. Nene tells him that she wanted to stand on stage some more and someday become a professional actress.

Scramble Fan Festival[]

Tsukasa and Nene are first seen talking in Chapter 6 of the event. In this chapter, Nene asks her troupemates for help with practicing for the Fan Festa. Tsukasa scolds her for not telling them she was participating in the event with Minori, Ichika, Kohane earlier. Nene says that it'd be "because they would come", to which Tsukasa responds that he'll do his best to support her on stage and keep the schedule. With the help of Emu's added encouragement, Nene eventually gives in and introduces the others to one another.

The two aren't seen interacting together in Chapter 8, however, a nervous Minori asks why Tsukasa is backstage. The first reason Tsukasa was that he was there to support Nene and wanted to give his full support and encouragement.

As Nene takes the stage in Chapter 9, the audience is mesmerized by her performance. The rest are watching Nene's performance and Emu's happy to see everyone enjoyed it, and Tsukasa proudly agrees, "That's our songstress for you!" Rui laughs at this, noticing a clueless and proud Tsukasa in tears. Rui says, "Hehe. Is that a tear I see in your eye, Tsukasa?". Because of this, Tsukasa's eyes widen, taking note of Rui's words about his reaction, and their interaction ends with a flustered, blushing Tsukasa.

Desperate Times?! Island Panic![]

In episode 1, Nene and the rest of the troupe are stranded on an island. Nene then finally remembers how they got there, and a flashback starts. Emu's older brothers, Keisuke and Shosuke, inform the group that they'll be going on a fancy cruiser to get to the location of their upcoming show. Tsukasa cheerfully exclaims that they're going to put on the best show imaginable and reach new heights. Nene starts thinking about how Tsukasa's the main reason they got this opportunity, because of their show at the music hall. She continues thinking about how much he's grown as an actor, and how the audience was blown away by his performance. Tsukasa then interrupts Nene's internal dialogue by asking her if he has something on his face, to which she responds that it's nothing, smiling. Flashing back forward to Wonderlands x Showtime on the island, they realize they are now stuck.

In episode 4, after the group wander into the forest in search of food, Emu spots bananas high up in a tree, and they decide to get them by having Emu stand high with the help of Tsukasa and Rui, while Emu holds up Nene. Nene warns them to slow down when they're about to stand up and Tsukasa reassures her not to worry. While Nene tries reaching the bananas, Tsukasa shamefully announces that there's an emergency, that being he needs to sneeze. Nene freaks out and tells him to hold it in. She continues panicking, asking him to hold on a bit longer. Tsukasa tries to calm her down, weakly telling her there's no need to rush, and that he can keep it at bay, (although he is nearing his limit). Nene realizes how everyone's trying their best to keep her calm, and that she needs to do what she can for them. She stands up, and finally grabs the fruits. After everyone gets down, Tsukasa finally lets his sneeze out while Emu celebrates their victory. Later, they all hear strange sounds coming from monkeys trying to attack Nene. A concerned Tsukasa quickly asks her if she's alright. She says she's okay, but in the end the monkeys successfully stole their bananas. Tsukasa then chases the monkeys to retrieve their bananas back, Emu, Rui, and Nene following behind. Nene tells him that he's too serious about getting the bananas back and that they might get hurt. He responds saying that she shouldn't worry, and he wouldn't lose to those monkeys. She retorts saying she has every reason to be worried. The group continue chasing the monkeys and thinking of ways to outsmart them.

In episode 7, Wonderlands x Showtime return to the shore with an abundance of food, having resolved all of their problems with the monkeys. They meet up with Shosuke (Emu's brother), and begin telling stories while having dinner. Rui says that the first thing he would think of would be their ambassador shows. Nene thinks the same and mentions that Tsukasa had recently done an amazing job as Thorpe. They continue talking about their shows, including the one about the Little Mermaid, and how Nene's ad-libbing was awesome. Tsukasa agrees, saying "That's our songstress for you!". The group then talk about their dreams and ask Nene about hers. She thinks about how she loved singing, and how doing shows with everyone reminded her of how fun singing on stage was. Nene finally tells them that she wants to be a musical actress, who travels around the world. Tsukasa excitedly suggests that if they both make their dreams a reality, they could be able to work together on something. Nene says the chances of that seem low, but it would be great if it were to happen. Nene realises they will all have to go their separate ways in the future. She tells them that the thought makes her heart sink, but when it does happen, it'll be the moment when they're taking big step towards their dreams, so she'd want them to be happy and support each other, together. Tsukasa gasps as she continues, adding that she thinks things between them will always stay the same, and that she wants to cherish their time together. Tsukasa says that she's absolutely right, and that they'll encounter problems on their ways to their dreams, but they've accomplished so much together, they can take any challenge thrown at them!

Card Stories[]

In Nene's initial 2* card's second side story, she comes up with an idea. She mentions that Rui had taken Robo-Nene for upgrades and that once they were complete, she'd like to do a show with her. She assumes that Tsukasa will shoot down the suggestion of continuing to do shows, but Tsukasa does the opposite. He asks Nene what kind of performance she has in mind next, which surprises Nene that it was a more positive reaction than expected. Tsukasa is on board with the idea after Rui explains the upgrades he is planning, with Nene saying that it was cool. Rui tells the others to be patient, with Nene saying "Right." while Tsukasa continues to boast, saying that Rui can give her all the upgrades he can think of but that Robo-Nene would never be able to outshine him. Nene calls him the brightest star in the constellation of Goofus. Tsukasa is offended and tells the others to stop, Nene calling him Rufous Goofus Doofus.

In Tsukasa's initial 2* card's second card story, Tsukasa calls up a meeting. Nene asks why he's calling it up and chairing it, to which he responds with that he's the leader of the troupe and Nene thinks he's a self-proclaimed leader. Then, Tsukasa thinks to himself and believes he's becoming quite skilled dealing with Emu, to which Nene is weirded out and says he has that creepy grin on.

In Nene's "Animal Cotton Candy" card's second side story, she tries coming up with ideas for a play that should be more realistic and less fantastic. She thinks about the school festival and Tsukasa asks if Nene had an eureka moment. She says it wasn't that spectacular, but talks about her idea to which Tsukasa says it's simple enough for little kids to understand but asks if it was too plain to what they've been doing.

In Nene's "I Thought I'd Die" card's first side story, Nene mentions that she's looking forward to see the Little Kingdom. Tsukasa asks if Nene knows a lot and Rui says that it was Nene's favorite. The two talk about how they've heard of the Japanese version of the Little Kingdom and are looking forward to the original version. Then, Rui says he needs to build a remote control section for Nenerobo to fly over to them since she has a built in translator, to which Nene and Tsukasa say in unison that Rui doesn't need to. In her second card story, Tsukasa boldly believes that he would not make the same mistake again while Nene says that he would. He says that he checked the hotel room 5 times before leaving, which Nene says that he was checking way too much. Miku and MEIKO appear in Tsukasa's phone, noticing that him, Nene and the others were buying souvenirs. He tells the two that he can get anything they'd like, with Nene saying that it's best to leave it up to him.

In Tsukasa's "One Foot In Front Of The Other" card's first side story, Tsukasa walks around his neighborhood, thinking about how he wasn't able to give Nene any advice, and he wishes he could do something for her since she helped him with his role. A few days later, at the Phoenix Stage, a worried Tsukasa notices Nene's eyebags and realizes that she's putting on a face and pretending everything's okay when it really isn't. While he wonders how he could help her, Sakurako Seiryuin approaches him, and he expresses his worries for Nene to Sakurako, so the two discuss about how Nene could fix her problem.

In Nene’s “Backstage Operator” card’s first side story, the Wonderlands x Showtime members are discussing ideas for their show choreography. Tsukasa tells Nenerobo to stop sitting around and come back on stage to continue discussing their script. This makes Nene think about how Tsukasa didn’t want a robot performing with them at first, but now he treats Nenerobo as if she were an official member of the troupe. Nene smiles and calls him a strange fool. Tsukasa asks Nenerobo if she heard him, to which she responds with a “Yeah, yeah.” He exclaims that once was enough. She responds with another “Yeeeah.”

In Nene’s “Gift from Above” card’s first side story, Tsukasa talks about how Nene overcame her fears and released her true potential and that the rest of Wonderlands x Showtime should break out of their shells too. Nene thinks it’s dumb. The group continues discussing about overcoming difficulties before Rui leaves to bring them a box which Nene is suspicious of. Tsukasa then opens it out of curiosity, and it’s filled with lots of toy bugs and centipedes. He runs away screaming while Rui attempts to cure his phobia by giving him a “bug shower.” Tsukasa yells again as the bugs target him. Meanwhile, Nene asks Nenerobo to shield her from the bugs. Tsukasa complains about this, saying that it was unfair and Nene should protect him too. Nene calls him an idiot tells him to stay away from her since he’s the target. Emu then assists Rui with shooting more toy bugs at the two and they both scream in sync, scrambling to escape.

Fanon[]

Nenekasa is a relatively popular ship within the fandom, though it doesn’t get too much recognition like the other pairings. The reason why is because some consider their dynamic toxic, with Nene constantly teasing and acting sarcastic against Tsukasa, and how some of the player base can't get over Tsukasa lashing out on Nene during their unit's Main Story, when he has gotten over and developed immensely since then. Despite the devoted fan base, a lot of people see Nenekasa as a platonic ship, and some even view the way Nene and Tsukasa bicker as a sibling dynamic. Nenekasa is overshadowed by popular ships within their unit like RuiKasa, Ruinene, Emukasa, and Emunene. Nenekasa is normally shipped alongside Ruiemu. Some fans like to pair all of the ships in one polyamorous relationship, Polyshow. Nenekasa currently has over 400 works on AO3.

However, Nenekasa is still a very loved and popular ship, and whether if it's viewed in a platonic sense or not, its dynamic is well-appreciated due to Nene's light-hearted bullying against Tsukasa, and how they act like an old married couple. A lot of fans tend to think of Nene as a tsundere toward Tsukasa (based off how she calls him an idiot, blushes around him, etc.) or interpreting the dynamic along the lines, and commonly fans like to compare their dynamic to Yuukei Yesterday and Harutaka.

Ship Weeks[]

In 2022, a Nenekasa Week was held on Twitter from September 26-October 2, using the nenekasaweek2022 hashtag on Twitter. Themes were "song, practice, star" for the first day, "games, offstage, #1" for the second day, "comfort, show, trust" for the third day, "growth, adlib, pride" for the fourth day, "fond, finale, realization" for the fifth day, "future, curtain call, promise" for the sixth day, and "AU, encore, free day" for the seventh and final day.

The next year, a 2023 Nenekasa Week took place August 5th-11th. Similar to the last year, it used the nenekasaweek2023 hashtag on Twitter. The prompts for day one were "love language and seasons," prompts for day two were "hesitation and courage," day three was "trope(s) and etude", day four was "day off and behind the scenes," day five was "admiration, dazzling," day six was "co-star and AU," and the final prompt was "encore, free day."
