Newta is the het ship between Newt Scamander and Leta Lestrange from the Harry Potter fandom.
Canon[]
Hogwarts Years[]
Newt and Leta both started at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1908. The two met during their Hogwarts years when Leta is getting bullied and Newt is the only one to understand her. They bonded over their shared love of magical creatures and their outsider status. In 1913, Leta's experiment involving a Jarvey went wrong, endangering the life of another student. Rather than seeing his good friend expelled, Newt took the blame, causing him to get expelled instead. Newt was in love with Leta and remained so for many years, keeping a framed photograph of her in his suitcase.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them[]
When working with the magical creatures in Newt's suitcase, Queenie Goldstein saw the photo of Leta Lestrange and asks Newt who answered that she is nobody. Then Queenie uses Legilimency on Newt and told him that Leta was a "taker" while Newt needed a "giver". When Newt was about to leave New York, Tina brought up Leta Lestrange, asking if she liked to read. Newt responded by saying that he did not know what she was up to anymore.
Between The movies[]
At some point before 1927, Leta got engaged to Newt's older brother, Theseus Scamander. They planned to have Newt as their best man at their wedding.
In 1927, the Scamander brothers, Leta and Newt's assistant, Bunty, participated in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book launch. An article was published, which mistakenly informed that Leta was engaged to Newt.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald[]
When searching for Credence, Tina meets Yusuf, yet another interested party looking for Credence. Newt and Jacob follow Yusuf to Tina, and Yusuf explains that he has sworn to kill Credence, believed to be his half-brother and a member of the Lestrange family.
Newt and Tina infiltrate the French Ministry of Magic for documents to confirm Credence's identity and are discovered by Leta and Theseus. Their search leads from the Ministry to the Lestrange family tomb, where Yusuf and Leta explain their relation and Leta reveals her brother died as an infant, and thus cannot be Credence. Leta felt very guilty and think she killed her brother Corvus, but Newt said that it isn't her fault, Leta respond saying Newt haven't met a mobster he couldn't love.
The trail seems to have been fabricated to lead Credence to the tomb, where Grindelwald is holding a rally for his followers, with Queenie in attendance and Jacob in search of her. In the fight at Grindelwald's ally, Leta sacrificed her life and distracted Grindelwald to give time for her allies to escape. Shortly before she died, she said "I love you" to the Scamander brothers, but it is unclear which brother she was talking to.

On AO3, Newta is the second most written romantic ship for Leta. The ship is less popular than Newtina. Shippers liked the idea of the two childhood best friends who were opposites attract, but also understood each other in a way others didn’t.
On Fanfiction.net the numbers of written works are significantly less than Newtina, with Newtina having more than 600 fan fictions and Newta having less than 100 written fan fictions.
However, shippers like the fact that both of them is outcasts and they all love magical beasts. Some shipper still think Newt would be better if he ended up with Tina, but with Fantastic Beast: The Secrets of Dumbledore releasing in April, the ship have less and less popularity.
