Curse of the Black Pearl[]
Elizabeth and Norrington have known each other since she was a young girl. They are first seen sailing together on the HMS Dauntless, as Elizabeth and her father arrive in Port Royal. The next time they are seen together, Elizabeth has grown into a young woman. Norrington attempts to propose to her, but Elizabeth passes out due to the tightness of the corset she is wearing and falls into the sea. This awakens the cursed pirates of the Black Pearl, and that night they storm the port town and kidnap Elizabeth. Norrington pulls together his forces of the British Navy in an attempt to save Elizabeth.
Norrington eventually finds Elizabeth and Jack Sparrow, marooned on an island. He picks them up and tries to bring Elizabeth home, but she asks him to save Will Turner as well. Norrington at first refuses, but changes his mind when Elizabeth suggests that it could be a "wedding present" to her. Upon rescuing Will and returning to Port Royal, Elizabeth reveals that her true desires are for Will and for a pirate's life. Norrington lets her go, but promises that he will continue to chase Jack Sparrow until he pays for his crimes.
Dead Man's Chest[]
Elizabeth and Norrington meet each other again in Tortuga. Norrington has quit the Navy and is now down on his luck. Elizabeth and Norrington join the ranks of Jack's crew, and sail towards Isla Cruces. Norrington watches while Elizabeth speaks with Jack, and begins to wonder if there is something romantic to their interactions. He approaches Elizabeth on the ship's deck, and tells her that he once wished that she would look so in love while thinking about him. Elizabeth blows Norrington off, but he continues to try and sow the seeds of discord by suggesting to Elizabeth that Jack helped put Will on the Flying Dutchman.
Later, Elizabeth, Norrington, and Jack dig up Davy Jones' heart. Will soon arrives, and attempts to claim the heart as well. Norrington seems annoyed by his sudden appearance, and he, Will, and Jack quickly engage in a three-way sword fight. Elizabeth considers the whole thing to be "barbaric" and tries to convince the three men to lay down their swords. Norrington eventually uses a distraction in the fight to get away with the heart, and use it to reinstate himself in the Royal Navy.
At World's End[]
With Norrington back in the Navy and Elizabeth a newly named Pirate Lord, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the War Against Piracy. When they reunite once more, they are initially relieved to see each other alive. However, their feelings soon change as Elizabeth remembers that Norrington is fighting against her. She reveals that the Royal Navy murdered her father, which shocks Norrington. He sends the pirates to the brig, but offers Elizabeth to stay in his quarters. She refuses, wanting to be as far from his as possible.
Upon realizing the atrocities committed by the side he'd chosen, Norrington decides to change his affiliations. He frees Elizabeth and her crew from the brig, and assists them in escaping from the Flying Dutchman. Upon fully realizing Norrington's change of heart, Elizabeth asks him to come with her and her crew. Norrington, however, chooses to stay back and ensure Elizabeth's safety. He promises to follow her, then kisses her before they separate for the last time. He is killed by Bootstrap Bill aboard the Flying Dutchman, which shocks and devastates Elizabeth.
Fanon[]
Norribeth is a popular ship in the Pirates fandom, although pales in comparison to the popularity of Willabeth and Sparrabeth. Still, it has a large shipping community and is most often enjoyed by fans of James Norrington. Shippers are often those who think that Norrington "deserved better", and wanted to see a full redemption arc for him rather than having him be killed off at the end of the original trilogy of films. Other fans enjoy the inherent tragedy of the ship, with some considering the ship to be representative of the "Right Person, Wrong Time" trope.
This ship currently has over 300 works on AO3. It is the second most popular ship for Norrington, and the third most popular ship for Elizabeth. It is the fifth most popular ship overall in the fandom.
