Nottinghood is the slash ship between Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham from the Robin Hood and Once Upon A Time fandoms.

Canon

The Sheriff is the main villain in the Robin Hood ballads. Since the Sheriff is often depicted as the one overtaxing the citizens, he is a prime target of Robin and they are often considered to be arch-enemies. Some versions of the story have him serve as the rival for Maid Marian's affections. Most version don't have him as Robin's main villain, with him often being the Prince John's lackey or Guy of Gisbourne's superior. Since Nottingham is set far from Sherwood Forest, most stories that pit Robin against the Sheriff have him far from home and butting heads with a local.

Robin Hood (1973)

The movie starts with Robin and Little John escaping an ambush from the Sheriff's archers, nearly hitting Robin but only piercing his hat. Aside from establishing the Sheriff's hatred of Robin and putting him in Prince John's path, this ambush is barely relevant to the plot.

When Robin arrives at Nottingham, the Sheriff is currently crashing the birthday party of a little boy named Skippy, cruelly taking his birthday present of one farthing away from him. Robin enters the party disguised as a blind beggar, with the Sheriff putting the farthing into his cup, but collecting the other three coins that fall out of the cup without the "beggar" noticing. Ironically, the Sheriff has no idea that the beggar is Robin Hood, had he noticed he would've arrested the wanted outlaw then and there.

Robin manages to fool the Sheriff once again by disguising himself as a stork for Prince John's archery tournament. Making the irony even more obvious, the Sheriff brags about his ability to spot Robin Hood in disguise to the stork. Since a kiss from his beloved Maid Marian is the prize for winning, Robin is determined to not lose the tournament when he and the Sheriff are the only ones standing, even as he realizes that the Sheriff is cheating. Even as the Sheriff directly manipulates Robin's bow by shoving it upwards, Robin corrects the path of his arrow by firing another arrow. As Robin Hood is discovered after winning and is sentenced by Prince John to be executed, the Sheriff finds it odd that Prince John, who hates Robin Hood just as much as he does, suddenly orders Robin to be released. So he goes to investigate and notices Little John holding Prince John at knifepoint and distracts him for long enough for Prince John to order Robin's execution again. A battle between the two factions breaks out, but Robin and his allies manage to escape unscathed.

In the Sherwood Forest, Little John and Allan-a-Dale write a song called "The Phony King of England", mocking Prince John. The Sheriff is shown singing the song the next morning, when Prince John angrily calls him out on it, the Sheriff notes that he still hates Robin Hood, but the song became a huge hit in Nottingham. In his pure rage, Prince John overtaxes the citizens of Nottingham and the Sheriff uses this opportunity to try and tax the church as well, only to be beaten by Friar Tuck for it. The Sheriff then arrests the friar for high treason and doesn't hesitate when Prince John orders for Tuck to be hanged, both of them knowing that Robin Hood will try to stop it and run straight into their hands. Robin once again shows up as a blind beggar to ask the Sheriff some questions, which makes one of the Sheriff's vulture henchmen suspicious. The Sheriff however brushes it off, still completely oblivious to Robin disguising himself and bluntly tells him that Friar Tuck shall be hanged. Robin nearly blows his cover in alarm, but manages to reach Little John without rousing suspicion and they plan a jailbreak right where they are.

That night, they scan the jail and notice the Sheriff guarding the gate, with his two henchmen manning the crossbows. Robin and Little John manage to ambush one of the henchmen and Robin impersonates him, approaching the Sheriff. As the Sheriff is already sleepy, Robin sings him a lullaby to steal his keys and gives them to Little John so he can free the prisoners. As Robin is in the process of stealing Prince John's tax money, Prince John orders for Robin to be shot, one of the arrows scrapes one of the sacks of gold, with a few coins raining down on the Sheriff. Little John manages to knock him out and impersonate him getting the prisoners out in a carriage, but Robin ends up trapped trying to save a child. In his undergarments, the Sheriff chases Robin up a tower. Having cornered him, the Sheriff uses his torch to set the tower on fire, intending to burn Robin alive. Robin however, manages to jump out the window and escape as the Sheriff is blocked off by the flames he himself had caused. The Sheriff is later seen again as a prisoner for supporting Prince John's tyranny, while Robin Hood is pardoned by King Richard personally.
