Masters of Spinjitzu[]
Possession[]
Nya inherited her powers from her mother Maya, whose identity as the Master of Water Nya was ignorant of for a number of years. It would not be until the episode "Ghost Story" that Master Wu and Misako, who had known both of Nya's parents, revealed this information to Nya. Wu then declares that it is time for Nya to follow in her mother's footsteps and become the Master of Water in order to combat the current threat of the ghosts of the Cursed Realm. The news about her mother, coupled with this new expectation, causes Nya to faint.
In "Stiix and Stones", Wu attempts to begin Nya's training but finds her a reluctant student at best, since she already has established herself as the heroic Samurai X. He also informs Nya that water is one of the few things ghosts are vulnerable to, making her mastery of it essential to their war effort. Reluctantly, Nya takes on the first exercise: filling a bucket with water...when the bucket has a hole in it. Nya at one point attempts to plug the hole, but Wu informs her that the point of the exercise is to find her weakness. Outraged by the suggestion, Nya tosses the bucket into a pond, unwittingly accomplishing the task she had been set.
Unwilling to accept the role of Water Ninja if it means admitting and confronting her own weaknesses, Nya attempts to abandon her training and go to the aid of her Ninja brother and friends in "The Temple on Haunted Hill." However, upon encountering several ghosts at her Samurai X Cave, she discovers that her high-tech weapons are no match for the spectral foe. In the stress of being at the mercy of the villains, Nya manages to tap into her powers for the first time to summon rain. As such, Nya is forced to confront the dual reality that not only is she the Water Ninja, but she has to be the Water Ninja if they are to stand any chance against the ghostly foe.
Having accepted her role, Nya dons a new Ninja gi and uses her experience with the situation to comfort a distraught Cole in "Peak-a-Boo." In "Kingdom Come", Wu continues Nya's training. In "The Crooked Path", Nya is tasked with making a fountain flow opposite to the way it is currently running. She receives unlikely assistance from Ronin, whose suggestion that she not take the matter so seriously ends up enabling her to accomplish the task without thinking. Unfortunately, when Ronin betrays the Ninja and their allies and escapes down a river, Nya is unable to replicate her earlier feat because of how seriously she cares about doing so.
In "Grave Danger", Wu is perturbed when Nya seems uncaring about her progress in her training in mastering water. Fortunately, Nya is able to make the sea surrounding the Destiny's Bounty rise up to defend them when they are attacked by a number of ghosts, though it is a struggle. She also succeeds in freeing Misako from Bansha's possession by hitting her with a blast of water. In "Curseworld, Part I", Nya suggests a ruse to take full advantage of her powers: disguising herself as Lloyd and then unleashing her Water powers on the unprepared ghosts. Upon being confronted by Morro, the ghost Master of Wind, Nya finds herself outmatched.
In "Curseworld, Part II", Nya uses her powers to battle the Preeminent, the living embodiment of the Cursed Realm itself. However, with the aid of her ghost minions, the Preeminent is fitted with armor and pursues the Ninja and various civilians out to sea. Realizing that her power is truly the only means they have of stopping the monstrous creature, Nya heeds Wu's earlier counsel and reflects on her fears of being weak. Through her contemplation, she is able to unlock her true potential, with a swirling pillar of water surrounding her in the process. She then summons a massive wave from the sea that slams into the Preeminent, sending the eldritch abomination and her forces plunging to their watery doom.
Skybound[]
By the time of the episode "Infamous", Nya has accomplished the feat of summoning her own Elemental Dragon by tapping into her powers.
In "Wishmasters", Nya is able to combine her powers with Jay's to produce a combination Water-Lightning dragon.
The Hands of Time[]
In "Out of the Fire and Into the Boiling Sea", Nya uses her power in combination with Kai's and the magical Dragon Blade in order to produce the Fusion Dragon, a paradoxical combination of the powers of Fire and Water. Using this dragon, she and Kai are able to travel to the sunken, lava-surrounded city of Hono Mizu and obtain the last of the Time Blades. Shortly thereafter, the pair again manifested the Fusion Dragon in order to pursue the Time Twins back to their time machine, the Iron Doom, and then follow the villains into a time vortex. In "Lost in Time", Nya and Kai once again combined their powers to create the Fusion Dragon, using it to battle the Iron Doom in defense of the Elemental Masters of the past. They would then employ it to pursue the Iron Doom back into the vortex.
Seabound[]
In "A Big Splash", Nya unexpectedly loses control of her powers during a mission to intercept vengestone smugglers. Her attempt to blast several trucks with water for Zane to freeze instead produces a water tornado that she is unable to control. At Wu's prompting, Kai suggests that Nya reach out to their mother Maya for advice, but Nya is uninterested in seeking her mother's aid. After Nya's glitching powers cause a number of further incidents around the Monastery of Spinjitzu, however, Kai takes matters into his own hands and invites Maya to come to the monastery to assist Nya.
In "The Call of the Deep", Nya is urged to heed Maya's counsel since she is the individual most knowledgeable about the power of Water. She later becomes discouraged when her powers once again run amok. However, Zane and Pixal return to the monastery from an aquatic mission with startling and important information. Strange energy pulses are emerging from the Endless Sea, and these appear to be responsible for Nya's erratic power displays.
In "Unsinkable", Nya is somewhat reluctant to accompany the expedition beneath the sea due to her continuing power issues, but she eventually agrees to go. Maya is also doubtful of the prospect, but Nya asserts herself by claiming that she is following her own approach to being the Master of Water. In "Five Thousand Fathoms Down", Nya is affected by another energy pulse after entering the Temple of Wojira with her mother. In the ensuing conflict with Prince Kalmaar and his minions, she is revealed as the Master of Water to the prince, much to his grim satisfaction.
In "Long Live the King", Nya uses her powers to prepare her and Maya through the undersea as they flee Kalmaar's minions. In "Riddle of the Sphinx", Nya and her companions are stranded on the Island of the Keepers after Kalmaar cripples the Hydro Bounty. It is then that Benthomaar recalls legends of Nyad, the original Master of Water and Nya's namesake, possessing the ability to communicate with sea life as part of her powers. With some reluctance, Nya attempts to replicate this feat and succeeds-after some frustrated yelling into the water.
In "Master of the Sea", Nya learns how Nyad defeated Wojira millennia ago by merging with the Endless Sea itself at the cost of her humanity. The group then arrived back in Ninjago, towed by whales Nya had summoned, just in time to join in attempting to stop Kalmaar from escaping with the Storm Amulet, which he needed to awaken Wojira. Despite making skillful use of her powers, including the whales, Nya is tricked by Kalmaar with a fake amulet. In "Assault on Ninjago City", Nya uses her powers to help deal with the flooding unleashed by the awakened Wojira and rescue civilians. She later attacks Wojira to get the beast to drop a captured Jay, before using her powers to launch into battle against the giant serpent.
In "Nyad", Nya's battle against Wojira is ultimately unsuccessful, and she is forced to break off her attack. She also finds that she is unable to use her powers to draw a substantial quantity of water from Jay's lungs, which is threatening his life. Desperate to find a means of saving Jay and Ninjago, Nya questions Benthomaar about how Nyad became one with the Endless Sea. Though Bentho warns against this course, Nya eventually does so, becoming a water elemental who easily removes the water harming Jay. She then speeds off to confront Kalmaar and Wojira and bring an end to the fight.
In "The Turn of the Tide", Nya launches a ferocious attack upon Wojira and Kalmaar, only to be vaporized by the malevolent Merlopian. However, being one with Water itself, she is not so easily dispatched and eventually reappears in the form of a dragon made entirely out of water. Wojira also vaporizes Nya, but the Master of Water quickly reappears from a cloud and transforms from her dragon state back into a humanoid form. Nya shatters the Wave Amulet, and Wojira is then destroyed by its own Storm powers, but Nya remains merged with the Endless Sea. Having difficulty maintaining her humanoid form and feeling the call of the ocean, she bids farewell to the friends and family for whom she made this sacrifice and is later seen joyfully traveling through the undersea in company with whales.
Crystalized[]
In "Farewell the Sea", over a year after Nya's departure, Jay has taken to conversing with glasses of water in the apparent belief that they allow Nya to hear him. The citizens of Ninjago also send a float of lanterns out onto the ocean in memory of their defender. In "The Call of Home", Nya-once again in dragon form-saves a sailor during a storm, only to then be approached by Nyad, who is herself still an elemental being at one with the sea. While her predecessor has turned her back on her former identity, Nya finds that her old life and heroic instincts retain a hold on her. Upon encountering the memorial float, she regains her memories in a flash and tries to visit Jay at the lighthouse where he had taken up residence.
Unfortunately for Nya, Jay has departed with the other Ninja, and she still has difficulty maintaining humanoid form outside of the water. Consulting with Nyad, Nya is eventually inspired to seek a means of separating herself from her Elemental Power in order to regain her human form and identity. Though she values her powers, Nya determines that her friends and family mean more to her and sets out to accomplish her goal. In "The Shape of Nya", she manages to reach the Monastery of Spinjitzu through its sprinkler system and convey her plan for regaining her humanity to the other Ninja. With her body remaining unstable, Zane freezes her as a means of keeping her from dissolving, and he and the other Ninja then begin planning to seek the one being they know who might be able to extract Nya's Elemental Power: their old foe Aspheera.
In "A Painful Promise", having been kept in ice form for some time by the desperate efforts of her friends, Nya is finally drained of her powers by Aspheera and restored to human form.
In "Quittin' Time", Nya's power over Water begins to return, much as Kai's powers had when Aspheera had previously drained them. With Ninjago under siege by the Crystal King and his army, Jay suggests that Nya could use her abilities to send a message through the sea to call upon Benthomaar for help. In "Distress Calls", Nya does so, though due to her weakened abilities she is unable to say whether the message successfully reached Benthomaar or not.

Fanon[]
Nya's Water power is a fundamental and iconic part of her character from season five of the Master of Spinjitzu animated series onwards. Notably, it is a central theme of the Seabound season and of Nya's character arc in several other seasons. It is not, however, typically viewed in a romantic context, even jokingly. Nya does obviously value her powers, despite her initial reluctance to accept the mantle of Master of Water. At one point in the Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu season it was even indicated that being without her powers had become her greatest fear. However, Nya was ultimately willing to risk losing those powers forever if keeping them meant losing her connections with other people.
There are 39 works on AO3 in which Nya is merged with the Endless Sea as she did during Seabound.
