Sanemi and Obanai get along well, which is rare considering both their to be rude and ignorant demeanors. However, that is most likely why they get along anyway. The two are similar in a few ways, making them compatible with eachother. They enjoy each other's company, and are among the few Hashira whom they both like. This is stated in one of the official fanbooks, which details every Hashira's opinions on the others. When Sanemi is asked for his opinion on Obanai, he responds with “I get along with him the most.” Obanai reciprocate these feelings, considering Sanemi as a “friend I get along with."

Sanemi and Obanai attend the Hashira meeting together.
Both of them seem to have a hatred for Giyu, Tanjiro, and Nezuko as shown during the Hashira meeting. Sanemi repeatedly stabbed Nezuko and then laughed mockingly while trying to make her to consume his blood, and Obanai prevented Tanjiro from intervening by pinning him to the floor, who was later freed by Giyū. Beforehand, Obanai asked what they were going to do with Giyū, since he had violated the corps rules. In the second fanbook, Obanai states he hates Giyu because “his expression is always unhappy and it irritates me.” Sanemi claims that he doesn't like how he acts likes he's different from or even superior to the other Hashira.
After the incident that happened at the Swordsmith Village, a Hashira meeting was called regarding what happpened in which both Sanemi and Obanai were present.
A while later, Sanemi and Obanai are seen in front of a castle along with two other demon slayers. Obanai discusses the castle's abandonment, and then asks a demon slayer if it's where the abducted villagers were taken. As the demon slayer explains they kept track of them but found nothing, Sanemi gets frustrated at the demon slayer's foolishness. Obanai states that a woman just dissapeared as well, with a demon slayer admitting to losing track of her. Sanemi states his low expectations for them, just as Obanai spots a demon nearby. All four of them charge towards it, following it to the castle. The demon stops as he realizes he is being chased, and then makes his way into the castle. Sanemi, Obanai, and the two other demon slayers enter the castle as well, filled with many demons. A demon strikes from above, but is quickly slashed by Obanai. Sanemi and Obanai begin to engage in a battle with demons, where they kill all of them easily. Seeing their struggle, Obanai orders the other demon slayers to retreat while him and Sanemi go on alone. Sanemi adds that they are only getting in the way, and harshly demands they leave. After they do so, Obanai states something strange is going on in the castle, with Sanemi agreeing. Suddenly, a cry for help is heard in the distance. Sanemi quickly leaps up and finds a large group of demons, which he defeats with just one attack. Obanai then comes to assist Sanemi in fighting them. As all of them are killed, Sanemi complains he did not need Obanai's help. The two spot the demon holding the woman hostage trying to flee, with Sanemi threatening it. A bunch of demons suddenly appear in front of him, much to his annoyance. Sanemi continues to chase after the demon, eventually onto a rooftop where Obanai appears. Sanemi decides to let Obanai take care of the surronding demons, as he goes to rescue the woman. Sanemi corners the demon holding her hostage, who throws her off the rooftop. Obanai swiftly catches her, and then goes after the demon with Sanemi. They fall into a vast, mysterious castle with many demons and rooms. Sanemi launches toward the demon, but misses just as two doors close. Sanemi and Obanai are left in confusion, wondering where all the demons have gone to.
Fanon[]
ObaSane is decently popular in the fandom, but it often gets overshadowed by Obanai and Sanemi's more popular ships, such as ObaMitsu for Obanai and SaneKana or SaneGiyuu on Sanemi's side. Despite the overshadowing, the ship is still relatively popular within the fandom, especially on platforms like TikTok or Twitter. A reason for fans to like this ship could be because the two of them both don't get along with many of the other Hashira. Another reason that fans like this pairing is due to the fact Sanemi and Obanai have a close bond.
Some fans think that Sanemi should've kept Kaburamaru at the end of the manga, instead of Kanao. This could be because Sanemi is much closer with Obanai than she is, and if Sanemi kept Kaburamaru, it would be a reminder of him and Obanai's friendship. However, Sanemi is the one who gave Kaburamaru to Kanao, so he most likely had a good reason to. Fans speculate the reason he gave Kaburamaru to Kanao was to either honor Kanae and Shinobu's memory, or because he believed he wasn't worthy enough to take care of something Obanai once cherished. None these theories have been confirmed, so Sanemi's reason for not keeping Kaburamaru remains unknown.
Occasionally, the pairing can be turned into a polyamorous ship featuring Mitsuri Kanroji, that ship being SaneObaMitsu. The pairing would be considered semi-canon, as ObaMitsu is a canon pairing, while SaneMitsu and ObaSane are fanon. The pairing can also be polyamorous with Giyu Tomioka, despite Sanemi and Obanai's hatred for him. Usually, the reason behind this ship is because all three characters are 21 years old. ObaSaneGiyu can also be referred to as the “21 Trio” because of their shared age.
ObaSane currently has about 134 works on AO3.
