OdyAth is the friendship between Odysseus and Athena from the The Odyssey fandom.

Canon[]

Even during the Trojan war, Athena openly admitted to favoring Odysseus and Diomedes over any other Greek warrior. She even helps him win a race against the Ajax brothers.

On his journey through the sea for decades, Athena had watched him in the heavens, trying to set things so that Odysseus will succeed in returning home. This naturally clashes with Poseidon's desire for vengeance against Odysseus, especially because Athena is Poseidon's most well-known rival.

Finding out that Calypso, a daughter of Atlas, keeps Odysseus prisoner on her island home of Ogygia, she tried to persuade her father Zeus into allowing Odysseus to leave. When Zeus retorts that he prefers not to meddle in Calypso's affairs, Athena suggests that Hermes could deliver the message to her instead. Meanwhile, Athena herself offers to visit Ithaca to fill Odysseus' wife Penelope and their son Telemachus in on his whereabouts. She advices Penelope to reject any advances of the row of suitors all waiting for her hand in marriage, while inspiring Telemachus to look for Odysseus and hoping they could find each other. Athena even offers to follow Telemachus to ensure a save journey, mentoring the young man along the way. Together, they inform Odysseus' old friend Menelaus of Sparta about Penelope being harrassed by suitors aiming to usurp Odysseus' spot in their wedding bed.

Once Odysseus had escaped Ogygia, Athena proceeds to aid him by manipulating the course of the wind to give him a good sail. When Poseidon nearly causes Odysseus to smash into the rocks on shore, Odysseus receives advice from Athena allowing him to survive. Once he makes it back, Athena's words inspire him to the point where he keeps going even after his hands and feet had become sore. Odysseus settling down in the woods has Athena help him rest by closing his eyes.

In disguise, Athena convinces the nearby Nausicaa to assist Odysseus further. Once Odysseus is back on his feet, he begins praying to Athena, though Athena heard him, she was too afraid of Poseidon to directly interfere.

When Odysseus finally makes it to Ithaca, Athena places a spell on him to disguise him as an old man to test Penelope's trust in him. Once Odysseus manages to excel in Penelope's test, Athena lifts the disguise. However, when Odysseus, Telemachus and servants slaughter the treacherous suitors as revenge for trying to steal Penelope away, Zeus and Athena interfere and settle the conflict peacefully.

Because of Athena's status as a virgin goddess, many dislike the idea of shipping her romantically with Odysseus.
