Olympian Twins is the familyship between Artemis and Apollo from Greek Mythology.

Canon[]

Artemis and Apollo were a twin pair of Olympian gods, two of the many children of Zeus through an affair with the titaness Leto. However, when Zeus' wife Hera found out about their affair and Leto's pregnancy, she threatened that she would prevent Leto being allowed to give birth on land. When Leto was going into labor, Hera had cursed all the lands to reject Leto, but Poseidon saw the expecting mother be chased senselessly by the humans and took pity on her, so he raised an island from the sea which circumvented the words of Hera's curse and allowed Leto to settle down. Leto gave birth to a pair of fraternal twins, though a number of sources disagree whether Artemis or Apollo was born first. Leto was given the honor of being declared the goddess of childbirth for her struggle, with Artemis being given the title of patron goddess of pregnant women by association.

Though the twins both grew up discovering a skill and passion for archery, they endlessly butted heads in archery competitions because of it. When Artemis found out that Apollo was given a gift of his own bow after rescuing his mother Leto from an attack of Hera at only three years old (or even as young as four days), Artemis infiltrated the forge of Hephaestus and threatened him to make a bow for her as well. Though while Artemis desired a bow due to her passion for hunting, Apollo accepted it because he deemed it an elegant weapon worthy of someone like him. Following their coming-of-age, Artemis became the respected Goddess of the Hunt and the Night, in comparison to Apollo becoming the god of the Arts and the Light. Similarly, Artemis was the goddess of Chastity and vowed to never allow someone to become her lover with agreement of her father Zeus, Apollo was very driven by his romantic desires and, much like his father, enticed an impressive number of lovers.

Later, the twins were conflated with Helios and Selene, the titans of the sun and the moon respectively, with Apollo drawing the sun across the sky in his chariot and Artemis drawing the moon. Many myths have Helios and Selene coexist with their Olympian counterparts, thus it is often agreed that they retired and gave the responsibility of the day-and-night-cycle to the younger gods. Artemis vow of chastity was threatened by a man named Orion joining her group of so far only female hunters, Apollo was worried that this sister was going to break her vow, so he tricked Artemis into killing Orion. Though Artemis was not romantically interested in Orion, she was nonetheless enraged at Apollo for his deception, so as revenge she killed one of his lovers named Khione (further motivated by Khione claiming to have been more beautiful than Artemis, earning her wrath).

Despite their general rivalry, Artemis and Apollo are perfectly capable of working together to reach a common goal, they were both against the fall of Troy and worked together to try prevent it and teamed up to spite a woman named Niobe after she had insulted their mother Leto.

The twins appear in the Disney movie as incidentals on Mount Olympus, however their interactions are fairly sparse

Percy Jackson and the Olympians[]

Apollo and Artemis are introduced in The Titan's Curse, the third book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Apollo had arrived in his flying bus to pick up Percy's friends and the Hunters of Artemis after Artemis splits from the group to hunt the Ophiotaurus to prevent the destruction of Olympus. Despite the two of them not getting along, Artemis still asks her brother for help because she couldn't take her huntresses with her out of concern for their safety. However, when Artemis is kidnapped by Atlas and used as a lure for the heroes later, Apollo talks to Percy in private while disguised as an old man, saying that despite their differences, he still wants Percy to save his sister.

In The Battle for the Labyrinth, when fighting Geryon, Percy prays to the twins to guide his arrow in a way that would kill the three-bodied in one shot, though he later finds out that the twins weren't the ones who were guiding the arrow.

In The Last Olympian, Apollo and Artemis once again fight alongside each other when the giant Typhon attacks Manhattan, though it is ambiguous whether they teamed up or it was just a coincidence.

The Heroes of Olympus[]

Apollo and Artemis only appear in the final book The Blood of Olympus, where Hera reveals that they were banished to their birthplace of the island Delos for their own protection. There, it is revealed that because of Poseidon having created Delos as an island immune to curses, even curses placed after its creation, the twins are spared of Gaia's curse to trap the Greek gods in their Roman identities. Though the two are frustrated with being unable to do anything to help in the fight against Gaia and only having each other for company, they nonetheless spend most of their time on Delos sitting next to each other and sulking. Only after Reyna succeeds in transporting the Athena Parthenos on Greek ground where it was supposed to be, Gaia's curse had been lifted and Apollo and Artemis are finally allowed to leave Delos to join the battle. However, after the battle in Athens was won, Zeus blames Apollo for the whole mess and Artemis witnesses her brother being whisked back to Olympus as punishment. Artemis promises the heroes that she will try to talk sense into Zeus after managing to calm him down so that Apollo could be spared.
