One Piece is a manga series written by Eiichiro Oda and has been adapted into an anime, multiple movies, live action series and games.
Plot[]
The story of One Piece follows a boy named Monkey D. Luffy who gains the properties of rubber after eating a Devil Fruit and dreams to become the Pirate King by finding the famous treasure, One Piece. He sets out on an adventure to build up his crew, known as the Straw Hat Pirates, and tackle the open seas filled with rival pirate crews, hostile government forces and powerful syndicate groups. Throughout the story, the crew slowly uncover the secret of the world, corruption across the World Government and the Marines, as well as a world filled with racism, slavery and war. Luffy's crew is made up of ten people, including himself, who mean the world to him and intends to conquer the sea with all of them by his side.
So far, the crew have sailed the first half of the Grand Line, entered the New World following a time skip and most recently concluded their conflict with two Emperors of the sea, the world's most powerful pirates. Luffy has gained a bounty of 3,000,000,000 berries and has become the most infamous pirate of his generation and is known throughout the world for causing chaos, being completely insane and incredibly powerful. This has earned him the title of a "Emperor of the sea", one of four to hold such a title. Furthermore, his crew members are all infamous alongside him and have also gained extreme notoriety across the world. The hat that Luffy wears, the Straw Hat, is of significant value to him and represents his pledge to the famous pirate, and Emperor, Shanks, that he would become the Pirate King and intends to return it to him once he completes this task.
The show does not dabble in any serious romance, with almost all ships being fanon. The exception exists for Sanji, a member of the Straw Hats, and Boa Hancock, a Shichibukai, both of whom have expressed romantic interest in every woman (Sanji) and Luffy (Hancock). However, this exists simply as comic relief and has yet to develop into anything of substance, apart from Charlotte Pudding and Sanji.

Fanon[]
One Piece is the best selling manga of all time, with Dragon Ball and Naruto in second and fourth place respectively.
The One Piece community is divided on the idea of shipping, believing that such things undermines the purpose of the story and what the author is trying to create. Non-shippers also point to the fact that there is no credible romance among any of the Straw Hats and that romance existing with any outside character is scarce.
Despite the lack of romantic substance, due to the size of the One Piece fanbase, shipping is still very popular, with many fans passionately supporting their respective ships and often going out of their way to highlight moments or find potential clues on possible romantic outcomes.

Trivia[]
- Some fans believe it's a common misconception that Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece, stated "romance will not happen among the Straw Hats", however, during Jump Festa 2009 interview when a fan asked him "who does Nami like?", Oda believed that there most likely wouldn't be romance among the crew. Oda has also stated that the series is targeted at young boys, and believes that kind of demographic are not interested in romance.[1] While this is a fact, Oda has also been known to change certain plans the more he continues his story.
- However, this stated quote is a misconception when fans refer to a certain SBS in Volume 34. In SBS Volume 34 (released in 2004), "Doesn't anyone on Luffy's crew fall in love?", Oda replies "But they do... They're all in love... WITH ADVENTURE."[2]
