OttoKallen is the het ship between Otto Apocalypse and Kallen Kaslana from the Honkai fandom.

Canon[]

Elan Palatinus[]

1465 When Otto was 13, he met Kallen for the first time in a pretty unexpected way. One of his inventions, a small airplane, flew over a wall and landed on the other side. Kallen found it and brought it back to him. She complimented his work, which made Otto really happy. Since he was sick and weak, his family didn’t think much of him. Kallen was the first person who truly saw his effort and potential. After that, they became close friends.

1466 The children were attacked by Honkai beasts. Kallen's father, Francis Kaslana, gave his life to protect them and died from the burns caused by his weapon, Shamash. That moment was the first time Otto realized that if Kallen followed in her father's footsteps and became a Valkyrie of Schicksal, she might die the same way. This fear stayed with him even into adulthood. After Francis's death, Otto secretly entered the Apocalypse Reliquary to study the family relic, hoping to find a way to bring him back. Known as the Void Archives, the relic offered to revive Francis in exchange for Otto’s life. When Otto brought the Void Archives to Kallen and explained everything, she was far from pleased. Instead of smiling as he had hoped, she slapped him. She explains her father died to protect both of them and that while Kaslanas may die, but they will never yield. She refused to let anyone die for her, especially not Otto. Both were overcome with emotion and burst into tears and Otto apologized. They embraced and mourned together.

1470 Kallen is already a Valkyrie of Schicksal. Her Kaslana oath is put to the test for the first time as her opponents are not Honkai beasts but humans. She decides to fight her opponent, the immortal warrior Fu Hua, but loses because she lacks the necessary motivation. Otto runs across the battlefield and stands protectively in front of Kallen. But her opponent let her live. Schicksal loses the war against Shenzou and Otto carry Kallen all the way back to the Schicksal Headquarter.

1470 A plague ruled the country, claiming thousands of victims. Otto tested a cure on the sick, which resulted in their death. As he spoke of "I must find a cure or she will leave me." and as he find the cure, saying: "I found it! She´ll never leave me now!" you can speculate that Kallen was meant and that she was also ill, mainly because he cried afterwards. He says also that he can make Kallen maybe happy with it.

Octavia (Dorm)[]

1475 The Schicksal army was finally forced to retreat at the Kipchak Steppes in Central Asia. On their way back home, Kallen and Otto found a small girl, struggeling to survive in the ruins. Kallen gave her the name Vera and they took her to Europe, where Otto in particular took care of her. He taught her to read and write. Even though Vera couldn't become a Walltüre, he provided her with someone to train with. Because Vera admired Otto because of his care, she later named herself "Octavia", after his favorite fictional character Octavius. 1543 she died during her sleep. The following sentence was engraved on her tombstone: "Octavia, I hereby offer you your favorite name."[1] (Vera is given special mention here because it is a child that Otto and Kallen raised together and who Otto continued to take care of after Kallen's death and was apparently very important to him.)

Elan Palatinus[]

Schicksal's thirst for power had not paid off. Instead of being able to expand his claims to power, only the losses remained. To cover this, the church increased extra taxes in form of "Indulgences" to absolve their sins. As a result, people in west Europe became impoverished and began to hate Schicksal.

1476 Kallen and Otto were taking a walk through Western Europe when Kallen accidentally bumped into a young boy. The boy dropped his apples in the collision. Kallen immediately apologized and tried to help him pick them up. But when the boy noticed the brooch of fate on her robe, he panicked, begged not to be arrested, and ran away. In the background, people began whispering and accusing Kallen of stealing the apples. Disturbed by the situation, she tried to look for the boy but collapsed from her injuries and was caught by Otto. As she recovered, Kallen asked why people feared the Church so deeply. Otto explained that those who hadn’t taken part in the war were punished with heavy fines, paid in the form of indulgences.

Kallen questioned whether these indulgences were truly just. Before the conversation could continue, Otto invited her to dinner. After their meal, they overheard a woman pleading with a priest for more time to pay her indulgences. Instead of mercy, the priest demanded her daughter, Sasha, as tribute. Outraged, Kallen stepped in and scolded him. The priest insisted he was only collecting payment because she had lost the war. Before things escalated further, Otto stepped in. The priest relented and gave the woman three more days before disappearing. Kallen was furious that he could walk away so easily. Otto reminded her that vigilante justice changes nothing, and told her that if someone strikes her on the right cheek, she should offer the left as well. To ease the tension, he took her to a performance.

On stage was a masked speaker who called herself Shakespeare. Through poetic speech, she boldly criticized the Church. The show was soon interrupted by two guards who tried to arrest her for slander. Kallen acted quickly, grabbing a discarded mask and beach towel to disguise herself. Undercover, she rescued the speaker and helped her escape. In gratitude, Shakespeare gave Kallen the mask. Inspired by the injustice she had seen, Kallen decided she could no longer stay silent. Together with Otto, she made a plan to steal the priest’s money and return it to the townspeople. Otto supplied her with disguises and the tools she needed. They even left a letter for the priest, warning him of the break-in. But the priest cared less about the gold than what was hidden in his basement, which he ordered sealed off immediately.

The next night, with Otto’s help, Kallen disguised herself as a young woman and broke into the priest’s house. She gathered the gold but was caught and recognized by the priest. Even so, she managed to escape through a window with the bag of money and returned it to the people. After Kallen distributed the money to the residents on the second night, she noticed some figures about to kidnap Sasha. Determined to stop them, Kallen followed them, and their flight led her to the priest's house. There, her path took her into the basement, where she encountered the priest. She captured him and forced him to open the door. Inside, Kallen saw four girls bound to crosses and standing around a black box. In front of the box, another cross held Sasha, who was hanging unconscious. When Kallen demanded the girls' release, the priest lied, claiming they were part of a process to find a cure for the growing plague. Kallen immediately saw through the lie and told him that curing the plague only required some herbs, not the sacrifice of innocent girls. Forced to tell the truth, the priest revealed that Otto had lied. Instead of using herbs for the cure, Otto had sacrificed thousands of patients to create it. The priest also explained that the cube was intended to be used as a weapon against their enemies in the East, to exact revenge for the lost war.

Just then, three Valkyries entered the room. One of them was Eleanor Schariac, the first person who had healed Otto with the cure. She lunged at Kallen, intending to kill her, but Otto, who was also in the room, grabbed her spear and stopped her. In the struggle, he injured his hand, which began to bleed. The poison from the spear caused him to faint.

Kallen was eventually captured by two Valkyries and thrown into prison. After a nightmare in which he saw Kallen’s death, Otto’s first priority was to go to the prison. He briefly encountered his father before being left alone with Kallen. He opened the door to speak with her. Otto tried to explain that if the cube could be used against the Honkai, the sacrifices were necessary to secure the future of humanity. But Kallen, who had sworn to protect humanity, rejected this reasoning. A heated conflict ensued, driven by Otto’s fear of losing her, and it ended with Kallen slapping him across the face.

Otto promised that he would ensure Kallen and Sasha’s release, but he also made it clear that he could not stop the experiments. Later, the girl was brought to Kallen, and she took her home. As they walked, Kallen realized that Otto had lied about the tests. Power, she concluded, revealed the true nature of humanity. Determined to follow her oath, Kallen decided to act against Schicksal.

In the great cathedral, Otto, his father Nikolas (the Overseer), and the priest gathered to witness Eleanor removing a crystal from the black box. Overseer Nikolas was thrilled that they could soon reveal the contents of the box. But before he could celebrate, Kallen’s cross was thrown at his feet, which he saw as a betrayal from the Kaslana family. Kallen appeared and declared that she would prevent him from unleashing the box’s contents on humanity. As Eleanor was about to react, the Overseer and priest fled. Eleanor, already corrupted by the box, claimed that God was speaking to her. She ingested the crystal and transformed into a Honkai Beast.

A fierce battle broke out between Kallen and the beast. Kallen managed to weaken Eleanor temporarily and bind her with chains. She turned to Otto and explained that he was wrong. The box had no use for anyone. Otto replied, saying that his father would still believe the box could help humanity. Kallen countered again, insisting that the box had spoken to Eleanor, and that the voice she heard could only have been the Honkai’s. Their conversation was interrupted when Eleanor broke free and lunged at Kallen. In a desperate move to protect her, Otto fired Shamash at Eleanor. Kallen then ended the fight with her "Oath of Judah." The creature from the box, now freed, lunged at Kallen, attempting to possess her. But with her Kaslana oath and pure heart, Kallen was able to banish the creature from her body and send it back into the box. Her last words to Otto were: “It has corrupted too many people here. More will fall victim to its traps if it stays. I must seal it away—far from here. I... I have to go…”

1477 Otto attempts to create a new generation of Valkyrie while seemingly searching for Kallen. Void Archives offers him knowledge with which he can achieve his goal. A messenger brings him a letter which is written by Kallen. She writes that she now resides in the Far Eastern Islands where she met a terrible foe created by the black box. There is someone she wants to save in Yae village, so Otto orders a few loyal priests to send her the Oath of Judah. he also writes her a personal letter, but then never sends it.

In the video "Honkai Chronicles - Otto Apocalypse" released by Mihoyo, it is said that in this letter he wanted to tell her about his feelings for her.[2]

In Game[]

After Kallen was able to reseal the demon from the box, she was found badly wounded by Schicksal Valkyrie and taken back to headquarters. There she is put back in prison. Meanwhile, the overseer has a conversation with Otto that will decide Kallen's future.

"It's a golden opportunity." Said an old man's weary voice. "The aftermath of Schicksal's failed eastward conquest hasn't dissipated, yet the youngest Kaslana incurred a scandal. For thousands of years, The Three Houses have never been in such an awkward position. The League of Castile will not just let it slide."

"Taking down House Kaslana is just the first step. The nobles are going to have a field day. Their purpose is to destroy the system where the Three Houses take power, which must not happen." The old man paused for a moment, casting a meaningful gaze at his youngest son.

"Kallen Kaslana must die." Otto Apocalypse felt the whole world was spinning, though it was an answer he already knew. The girl whom he had always loved was sentenced to death. He went to any length to try to save her, and was rejected when reluctantly turning to his distanced father, which was his last resort. "Kallen Kaslana must die." Every word pounded his heart into deeper despair. He pondered over those words, unaware of what his father continued to say. "I'm old." Said Nikolas Apocalypse, the most powerful man in Europe. "And part of growing old is becoming senile. I can make horrible mistakes without realizing. The failure of the conquest should have been my wake-up call, but I didn't take a step back. Which gave the League of Castile too much leverage. I take full responsibility for the impeachment of the Three Houses."

"After Kallen Kaslana's execution, I will retire, which would be what the League of Castile wants, but unexpected. Thus the question — who could succeed me as Schicksal Overseer?"

"The perfect successor already died. My Ferdinand... if he was still alive, the failure of the conquest wouldn't have incurred such disastrous consequences. Fabian? My second son, tough on the outside, cowardly on the inside. He is more like a Kaslana. As for you, Otto..." Otto was awakened from contemplation the moment he heard his name. He looked up, and was surprised to see a rare fond look on his father's face. "You think I've been neglecting you because I dislike you? That is not true, my son. You are the most complicated one of all my children— You're smart like your mother Sabrina and astute like me, and you even have your grandfather Frank's malevolence. They say you are soft and weak, but I know you're not. You have proven your worth at the time of the plague."

"But I'll be blunt — you are inadequate for the position of Schicksal Overseer." Otto remained silent. He remembered Nikolas once promised at a family conference to let him be the successor. But he waited patiently. "So I have decided," Nikolas Apocalypse confirmed, "to give my seat to Marseille, Ferdinand's eldest child."

"That boy is only 16 years old, but is surprisingly sophisticated and relentless. Your mother and I will retire, as well as Fabian and Risa. It will make the League of Castile lower their guard and believe we've chosen to hand over power. And when they finally realize Marseille is not a puppet young prince but a ferocious tiger, there'll be nothing they can do."

"Your mother and I both think this is the best solution. But an unforeseen incident occurred. This incident is the exact reason why you're standing here." Nikolas took a step forward. The stately, authoritative bearing of the Overseer froze the air in the hall. "Kaslana," his voice took an even more serious tone, "is now the greatest hidden peril to Schicksal, and the Three Houses. Times have changed— the House of Kaslana is no longer our faithful ally. If Francis were still alive, he would never let his precious little girl suffer like that, and the League of Castile would be more well-behaved. Sadly there is no if... Francis is dead. And the capable ones among his children have all been taken away by the plague and the conquest. "Luka, the present head of the House, is a useless sick dog compared to his elder brother. If left unattended, the House of Kaslana will become Schicksal's Achilles' Heel." (I see.) Otto Apocalypse finally understood— The truth was, he was not important, and neither was Kallen. The only thing that mattered was their betrothal, which could put Kaslana in the palm of Apocalypse. (Wily old fox...) The Overseer continued with an aggressive smile, "Otto, my boy... I'm offering you a reward that is priceless to you — Kallen Kaslana's life."

"And what I want you to do in return is also what you've always longed for — marrying Kallen Kaslana. I don't care how you do it, but it must happen. And in exchange, I will manage to save Kallen, make you the head of the House, and deal with Luka for you. A fair deal." The strange thing was, after all those years, the dream of his life was finally about to come true — he could marry the girl whom he had always been pining for. But he didn't feel joy. Because he knew it was not what Kallen Kaslana wanted. [3]

And Otto was to be right, as it turns out later in the conversation with Kallen.

F4shiF3W4AEx-Kl

"Just fulfill our betrothal, please... You know me. I won’t let you die." In the darkness, he could hear Kallen Kaslana’s breath, but she felt so distant at the same time. "Schicksal doesn’t care about you or me, or our relationship. If we get married, I’ll become a hostage held by the Overseer to control my family, am I right?"

"...Yes." Otto didn’t lie to Kallen, because it was the truth. "But it doesn’t matter. This marriage is fake, and it can always stay fake, as long as it can keep you alive... which is what really matters. Kallen..." Kallen’s indifferent voice came from the other side of the bars. "But what’s the point of living, when l have to lie to myself and be comfortable being used as a pawn? It doesn’t sound more dignified than death itself." "..." He already knew her answer, and he could even anticipate her every word. But he could not accept it. Never! He had done so many things that she wouldn’t agree to, just for one of her childhood wishes, what’s one more? And this time it’d be for a more noble cause — to save her life! But he didn’t do anything. He clutched the icy steel bars, as if he was trying to crush them. "Tell the Overseer that Kallen rejected his request, and it was her own decision. She will never subscribe to what Schicksal has done, and she despises its unscrupulous rotting core underneath its shiny, magnificent shell. Kallen Kaslana would rather die. This is her defiance, though it’ll just be defiance..." Otto Apocalypse seemed to be paralyzed with despair. "I understand... Kallen. I really do..." A fierce yet soundless rainstorm fell in his heart. "But I can’t let you die. No matter what it takes — and I don’t care if you’ll agree to it — I will never let you die." The dark dungeon then fell into a long silence. All of a sudden, Kallen broke into a soft laugh in the darkness — "Thank you, my gifted inventor..."

"!" The sound of heartbreak was unexpectedly quiet. He waited patiently. He thought she had more to say to him. Because he had so much to say to her. But the silence lasted even longer than the last one. Words seemed to have become meaningless between them. "Did you bring some wine? I feel like a glass. Just one." Crimson liquid trickled into the glass. Kallen gently swirled the wine, looking surprised: "Is this the bottle of wine I gave you?"

"Yes."

"Lovely." Kallen Kaslana drank the glass of wine in one gulp. She didn’t say a word, and the glass only contained mist, which soon cleared. "Maybe in another world..." Otto didn’t hear the rest. He already left. [4]

Kallen wrote a letter before she was sentenced, but it never reached him. In the box with the letter were Otto's invention, a pistol (apparently Kallen's weapon) and two roses. She wrote following:

Farewell

This is a farewell letter from Kallen Kaslana to Otto Apocalypse. "Thank for your visit and the wine you brought me."

"But sorry. I can´t accept the choice you offered me."

"I tried, Otto, I tried many ways to turn things around and bring justice back."

"But Otto, we´re just too naive too weak..."

"We were played by the old men like chess pieces everything we did failed to make even the slightest difference."

"Otto, do you remember our first rogue action?"

"We were so happy and content, as if we had the solution to all the problems in the world."

"That was the most joyful time I´ve ever spend in my life" "But shortly after that, we hit a wall."

"A wall build with bricks of desire and the adhesive of power. It erected rom hell and split the world."

"Eventually we had to part our ways before the wall."

"I left my world behind but I never found a new continent through which everything could be changed."

"In the distant east, by the hands of twisted fate..."

"Just like you, I did something terribly wrong."

"You killed your own sister Eleanor, and I... I killed her."

"Otto, I know you´ve always looked up to me as your hero."

"But I´m just another flawed soul with shortsightedness and confusion."

"I am not as great as you´ve imaged... I´m just a fool who refuses to act against my heart."

"In your eyes, I´m stupid and stubborn, but even in the face of death, I can never betray my first motivation."

"As long as my heart beats, my body and my mind cannot be turned into a chess piece deprived of emotions and feelings." "In some way, you can say I´m a selfish person."

"Even though, I still ask you for forgiveness."

"Since I´m hellbent on staying true to myself, there´s only one way before me."

"I know this will break your heart." "But Otto, if the hero Kallen in your heart is still alive..."

"She´d tell you why she´d rather die than become a pawn in the political game."

"So... farewell, my gifted inventor."

"Maybe in the end, I can indeed be a hero forever in your heart."[5]

On the day of the execution, the desperate Otto released Honkai beasts to take Kallen with him in the chaos and flee with her. However, this resulted in Kallen attempting to protect the people who were being attacked by the Honkai beasts, losing her life in the process. Otto did not want to accept her death and decided to implement the "promise" and revive Kallen.

500 years Before Present Day[]

Following the reformation of Schicksal and prior to the events of the game, Otto spent centuries attempting to resurrect Kallen while preserving his own life. For five hundred years, he sustained himself using metal prosthetics, engineered with knowledge from the Void Archives, and only in recent times did he begin utilizing soulium body doubles and sentience transfer.

One such attempt is chronicled in Seven Swords where Otto sought to consult the Celestial. But this plan ended in failure due to Fu Hua's condition at the time. It wasn't until 1972 that Otto acquired the technology necessary to begin cloning Kallen which led to the creation of the A-E Series, which consisted of 260 clones in total.

The first two, A1 and A2, were cloned solely from Kallen’s DNA, but both melted within five minutes of creation. As a result, the A3 series incorporated Vishnu genes which produced clones that were physically stable though biologically incapable of aging past twelve.

To test their cognitive development, Otto forced these clones into confrontations, often resulting in one clone killing the other. Ultimately, only two distinct individuals emerged from the A3 series: A303 and A310. A303 would later be named Amber after being spared by A310, who became known as Theresa.

Although Otto deemed the project a failure, he kept Amber as his secretary and adopted Theresa as his granddaughter.

Otto is also the founder of Otto Entertainment, a game company. He is the inventor of the Kallen Fantasy and HOMU series of games. Kallen Fantasy III, on the other hand, never came out and dealt with the following story:

Cecilia: Eh, isn´t this Kallen Fantasy lll? This is an RPG with 3 Characters: Kallen the Valkyrie, her boyfriend Otto, and their pet HOMU. The aim is to defeat the Dark Fox of the East and ensure that Kallen marries Otto in the End. - Source: Babylons Prisoner Chapter Vi

Only the Valkyries use it for training. When Cecilia manages to surpass Otto's score and appear at the top of the hit list, he blocked her account.

Mihoyo released a game called Kallen Fantasy Vll, which is supposed to be an alternative version of Kallen Fantasy lll. Kallen is a student here who fights her way through the various classes and ends up competing against Sakura. But Sakura has nothing to do with the fox from Kallen Fantasy III. 1. It should be called Vixen then and 2. he only knew Sakura as the person who needed to be saved.

Kallen wrote the Letter. She now hides in far eastern Islands called Zipangu. She met a terrible foe created by the black box that she stole from us. There´s someone she wants to save in Yae Village. - Elan Palatinus, Chapter 13: His Reply.

Kallen Fantasy VI takes place in an alternate world and has nothing to do with Otto's series of games in the main story. So Otto was never jealous of Sakura. At least there is no evidence of this.

Second Eruption[]

Otto hopes to get the answer on how to bring a person back to life from the Herrscher of Death. This opportunity arises for him after 500 years, when an abnormality occurs in the Babylon laboratory, in the Babylon tower in Siberia, about which he is informed. When the Anti Antropia arrives in Babylon Tower, he already seems to suspect that Sirin would become a Herrscher. His plan is to make her fully awake, which is why he wants to get World Yang out of the way, when he nearly killed Sirin. In the course of the fight between Sirin and Schicksal, which cost countless lives, Otto manages to manipulate Sirin with the help of Fu Hua so that she can give him the answer to his question. However, Sirin fails in her revival as her mother has no soul. To clarify the answer "What is a soul", Sirin takes Otto to God. He asks him how he can revive Kallen. In response, he stabs himself.

In Chapter 17: Immortal Dreams, Siegfried Kaslana recalls the time he met Cecilia. When he was reunited with his lover, Kallen appears in Otto's ulterior motives, who believes in his good heart and thanks him for allowing the two to be together.

In Chapter 33: Obsession he said to Sirin when she wanted to retrieve the dead body of the fake Herrscher of Death and he eliminated the plasma hands with Shamash: "I am coming for you, Herrscher, no matter where you going. I am a little obsessed about my reunion with Kallen. No one shall get in the way of my obsession... Not even god. "

Second Key[]

Second Key 10 - Sambhogakaya

Second Key 10 - Sambhogakaya

Otto's team is inspecting the Second Divine Key. There, Fire Moth member Su created a bubble universe called the Seed of Sumeru, into which Durandal, aka Bianka ,is now drawn. Realizing that he cannot defeat Bianka in battle, Su draws her into a bubble universe created from his memories.

Bianka takes on the role of Su and Otto the role of Dr. Piers, Su's Doctor. During her time in the bubble universe, Otto assists in her efforts to find an antidote to the Honkai plague, which is transmitted by Honkai and forces the afflicted into eternal sleep. This plague was apparently triggered by a Herrscher who can create dream worlds. Otto is also torn into a dream world in which he sees his wife Kallen. The two of them sit outside at a table and drink some drinks. Otto, realizing he is in a dream world, asks his bodyguard Paul for his gun to shoot Kallen with. As a result, he wakes up bathed in sweat from what appears to be a nightmare, which wakes up Kallen, who is sleeping next to him, and their daughter (who looks like Theresa). To calm down, Otto goes into the kitchen with Kallen, where she pours him some milk. This time, too, he does not fall for the dream world and tells the fake Kallen that his wife and child died of Honkai disease because he could not find the cure in time. He only survived because Dr. Mei amputated his infected arm. The wrong Kallen tried to wrap him up and hugged him from behind. Otto then turned around and stabbed her stomach with a kitchen knife. When she asked why he didn't want to stay in her dream world, he replied that it would be treason to indulge in this false world. This allowed him to wake up again and reactivate the machine Su is in before he dies.

Thus Spoke Apocalype (Kolosten Arc)[]

Tesla directs Theresa and Durandal towards Rogue Square as they might find the anomalies they're looking for there, but they are surprised when Otto appeared looking lost and is looking for Kallen. But this Otto is wearing a different outfit, and doesn't seem to recognize Theresa when she called him "grandpa".

Otto(?) struggles to believe it’s 2017 and that these people recognize him. Theresa calls him Grandpa but Otto asks how he could have lived over 500 years. They surmise that he must have been a parallel version of Otto. Theresa suggests helping Otto get back to his own time, but Durandal thinks it’s worth bringing him aboard their ship to investigate him. Otto then shares what happened right after a battle where they defeated Schicksal HQ’s main army and wiped out their Honor Guards. Tesla and Durandal remember a big campaign from 1491 when Otto led a rebel army against Schicksal HQ. Theresa explains what really happened, that he is the rightful heir to the Overseer position, but his sister and nephew took over first. After years of tyranny, Otto eventually took back control with the support of the people. Otto admits he didn’t win just by his own power but because he became a symbol for the people, who rallied around the Legend of the Holy Maid, Kallen Kaslana. He reveals Kallen died because of him, and the guilt haunted him so much that he fled to Venice and opened a monastery for orphans.

Otto(?) talks about how people’s faith in Kallen became a source of hope and resistance against Schicksal’s rule. Tesla accuses Otto of using that faith to manipulate people and seize power, reminding him of all the terrible things he did—plotting against allies, assassinations, and causing millions of deaths. Theresa tries to calm Tesla as this Otto isn’t the same Otto from their time. Otto(?) accepts the criticism and opens up about the darkness inside him, that he’s haunted by guilt and the pain of trying to live up to the Holy Maid’s legend. If he can return to his own time, he promises to give up his claim to the Overseer position because he believes Schicksal would be better off without him.

Nagamitsu tries to explain Otto's situation with an analogy of a game as while his he couldn't go back to his earlier choices, Otto got to “live his life again” using the Imaginary Tree’s power. Otto reflects on what it would mean to live for 500 years and he admits that someone who lived that long would have even stronger obsessions and probably wouldn’t change as he did. He joined the resistance because they fought under the banner of the Holy Maid, Kallen Kaslana, and he wanted to protect her legacy. When Kallen died, part of Otto’s “ego” died with her, leaving him longing to return to those days when he still had that part of himself. Tesla calls him a puppet despite his long life, but Otto replies by quoting Shakespeare's work about life being a brief shadow full of noise but meaning little. Durandal sees that he's familiar with Shakesphere and he admits that he and Kallen knew Shakespeare’s works and encountered him before. After a brief discussion, they agreed to test for spatial anomalies suspected to be Herrscher of Domination puppet strings at several locations, starting at St. 1491 Square,

The group travels through the place while passing through places that Otto(?) and the gilrs are familiar with, and explain the events that happened. Just then, Amber contacted them, passing a message that the real Otto has found the core of the Herrscher of Domination in the exact place they're at and he is aware of the other Otto as well. The group is suspicious about Otto's motives as he is supposed to be sorting out the aftermath of his resignation, but Theresa accepts the message and plans to meet her grandpa along with the other Otto.

Otto had two plans. In the first, if he won, he would send the entire city they were in back to the past. There, he would use its inhabitants to help save Kallen and gain approximately 500 more years to prepare against the Honkai, though this would come at the cost of destroying their present.

His second plan would activate if he lost. In that case, Otto would break free from his limitations and gain the ability to manipulate the Imaginary Tree, altering the past by creating two separate timelines: one where Kallen dies, and one where she survives.

Animated Short "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" Japanese-Dubbed - Honkai Impact 3rd

"Thus spoke Apocalypse" is a video released by Mihoyo showing Otto's last move to "revive" Kallen. When he lost to the Valkyries of Schicksal, he was able to break free of imaginary control for a moment. He filled "The Wedge of the Earth" with the power of the false god to create infinite possibilities for Kallen. Along the way, he must face Honkai personifications of himself, which transform into a Honkai beast as the battle progresses. His last words again reflect his personality and the reason for his actions.

When you truly want to change the world, you will discover how pitiable your own strength is. The Holy Maid gave her all to the people, and was repaid with merciless shackles und nooses. The world is at chaos. It´s neither fair nor sensible. It wrongs heroes and breeds scum. It is rife with ugliness without a trace of beauty. The malice of the world shall be sundered- by the villain.[6]

In the end, he can finally find his peace as his soul slowly dissolves into the universe. On the other hand, we are shown how Kallen survived the attack of the Honkai monster and how Otto finally managed to create a new timeline in which Kallen actually lives.

On September 10th, a fan video was published on the Chinese video platform Bilibili. In an illusion created by Vita, Kiana is shown a beautiful family life again. Kallen also seems to be Cecilia's and Siegfried Kaslana's child and celebrating her birthday. She eats cake while exchanging text messages with Otto. They are even seen Facetiming together. Otto, on the other hand, is traveling with Siegfried to buy a present for Kallen. Finally, the two men bring their lovers a bouquet of flowers.

Gun Girls Z also known as Houkai Gakuen 2, is the prequel to Honkai Impact 3rd. In the Reborn Chapter, in the Stigmata Space, the current-era Theresa encounters her Era: ZERO self, who is talking to someone about her mom and dad. She also notes that the girl seems to be a real child, unlike the current Theresa, who only has the appearance of one. Later, in the same Stigmata Space, Otto sees a memory of him, Kallen, and Theresa in a family-like setting. The scene is shown briefly, without any context about the three's relationship, but from what Theresa saw earlier, it can be inferred that it was Otto and Kallen that she called mom and dad.

Quotes[]

“Hey, Master Inventor... Do you want to join me on a quest? Let's go save the world and make it a better place.”
— Kallen
“My dear Kallen...”
— Otto
“Maybe in another world...”
“Otto… Do you still dream of making a flying machine?”
— Kallen
Otto“I'll make Sir Francis live again! I'll do anything to make you happy! I promise! I'm doing this for you!”
Kallen“Father died saving our lives, Otto! How dare you throw it away for a lie? We Kaslana may die, but we never yield! He's gone. We... We must be brave enough to live with it.”
Otto“I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry, Kallen...”
Kallen“I won't let anyone die for me, especially not you, Otto.”
— Elan Palatinus
Otto“ I don’t think of myself as one who clings to power. The reason I joined the resistance army was that they fought under the banner of the Holy Maid. Maybe I just selfishly wanted to keep the name “Kallen” from being defeated again.”
Tesla“You...”
Otto“I’m telling you the honest truth. Maybe you’ll find my motivations funny, or not worth caring about. But you should know that when Kallen died, that part of myself called the “ego” went with her. So, if I may be frank… There’s not a moment when I don’t wish to return to the past, to those days when Kallen was still in our world. To return to the time when I had an “ego”.”
— Otto explaining his motivations to Theresa and Durandal - The Birth of Tragedy
Kallen“Hmm, big inventor, can you do me a favor?”
Otto“Huh? A favor?”
Kallen“Yeah! When we grow up… let’s save the world together! And before that happens, you have to keep yourself healthy, understand?”
— Dusk of the Fool
Otto“My only wish is to support you as much as I can. I… I didn’t give much thought to what you said.”
Kallen“Otto… I don’t have much faith in the crusade this time. War comes with bloodshed. Bringing everyone safely home is my biggest wish right now.”
Otto“…You can do it, Kallen. I believe in you.”
— Dusk of the Fool
“I am coming for you, Herrscher, no matter where you going. I am a little obsessed about my reunion with Kallen. No one shall get in the way of my obsession... Not even god.”
— Otto
Otto“ That’s the story. I traveled to the distant future and experienced the impossible to have a chance to tell you the truth about the world. Don’t worry. Everything will be different this time because of you. Just like how very long ago, you changed the life of a certain teen. It was a spring morning… He was a sickly boy without any friends, and he ran into you, who got across the wall. You said hello to him and asked him to play along. At that very moment… The boy received his lifelong salvation.”
Kallen“Farewell... My great inventor”
— Otto's final goodbye to Kallen - Beyond Will

Fanon[]

OttoKallen is popular mostly in the Eastern fandom. The ship is beloved for it following the childhood friends to lovers trope and having one of the most tragic stories. Otto's dedication to Kallen is also one of the major reasons it is shipped. The ship is mainly rivaled by SakuKallen and OttoWelt shippers.

Aside from sexuality discourses, the ship has a lot of criticism surrounding it in the Western fandom due to many disliking Otto. As one of the main antagonists, his inability to move past Kallen's death and his obsessive desire to revive her have led to mixed reactions from the fanbase. There's also the widespread belief that Kallen doesn't love him, when the story shows that she is open to marrying him for love if their circumstances were better.

Ironically, after the "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" arc concluded and the animated short was released, the ship gained popularity as Otto's reputation vastly improved across both sides of the fandom. This was largely due to the story softening some of his more unpleasant traits and reframing his motivation from obsessive love to a guilt-driven desire to revive Kallen. As a result, many fans came to respect his unwavering dedication to bringing her back even if they still disliked his character. Meanwhile, Kallen's popularity declined in the Eastern fandom, where some fans blamed her for being the root of the conflict and suffering caused by Otto throughout the main story.

Many like to see it as a sibling dynamic or close friends who grew apart. Some also see it as Otto being a devotee to Kallen who is shown as a symbol like Christ, and Otto as one of her fallen angel. This also comes from when Otto turned into a 'false god' during his final battle with Kiana Kaslana and Durandal.

Otto's unwavering love and dedication to Kallen, despite her rejecting his offer of marriage, earned him the nickname "Simp" from fans to the point that he is even known as that outside the game. His love for her is so well-known that it’s become his most recognizable trait.

In AU works featuring the Kaslana family, Otto often appears alongside Kallen and is commonly regarded as a rich uncle figure to them. He is also humorously depicted as an overworked housewife/chef that cooks for them whenever he and Kallen visit due to the entire Kaslana family being notoriously dangerous in the kitchen.

It currently has 22 romantic works and 35 platonic works on AO3.

Fan Theories[]

Shattered Swords (T)

Shattered Swords (T)

One of the mysterious characters in Honkai:Star Rail is Luocha, who can be seen as an Expy to Otto Apocalypse. Luocha is often seen traveling the cosmos while carrying a mysterious coffin. Fans have speculated that the coffin may contain Kallen Kaslana, based from the Seven Swords visual novel where Otto is shown carrying Kallen in a similar manner. This connection has fueled numerous theories about Luocha's true identity and the continuity between the two games. However, by the end of the Wardance Arc, it’s revealed that the coffin actually holds a fragment of Tayzzyronth's divine body, the Aeon of Propagation, debunking prior speculation though his motives and origins still remains a mystery.

Trivia[]

  • In the official description of “Elan Palatinus” is "Year of our Lord 1470, Schicksal rallied the princes of Europe and unleashed a Crusade to conquer the Far East, only to be defeated by an immortal warrior. Kallen Kaslana, a powerful Valkyrie warrior, must make a choice between love and her oath". Since Yae Sakura is mentioned only towards the end of the manga, the sentence "to make a choice between love and her oath" is about Otto.
  • In the box with the letter to Otto, Kallen Kaslana left two roses, which according to Chinese traditions are considered a sign of apology between lovers.
  • In “Thus Spoke Apocalypse” before little Otto and Kallen were shown sleeping by the tree, there were two bright stars, Altair and Vega. Old Chinese legend tells of the forbidden love story between the goddess Zhinü (symbolized by the star Vega) and the cowherd Niulang (symbolized by the star Altair).
  • In the Chinese Honkai fandom, Otto is referred to as a "Pure Love Warrior/Soldier" (纯爱战士), a fandom slang where a male character is deeply and wholeheartedly in love with only one person, often to the point of obsession or self-sacrifice that he could do good or evil choices. He (alongside Kevin Kaslana) has also ascended as a "Battle God of Pure Love" (纯爱战神), someone who takes that devotion to legendary extremes and is capable of doing unimaginable things out of love. This term became popular because most male characters in Chinese Sci-Fi and fantasy media have multiple love interests, and in Hoyoverse games, confirmed romances are rare, so characters archetypes like Kevin and Otto who are completely devoted to one person stand out and become iconic within the community.
  • Otto is the only antagonist and non-playable character in Honkai Impact 3rd to have his own animated short called Thus Spoke Apocalypse which depicts his sacrificing his life to create a new branch in the Imaginary Tree. This created a new timeline where Kallen survived, though it isn't clear if that world's version of Otto survived or not.
  • The clothes Kallen wears during her heists are implied to have been sewn by Otto himself and they all fit her perfectly despite it being suggested that he never took her measurements.
  • Kallen has admitted on several occasions that she is open to marrying Otto. However, she rejected his proposal because she didn’t want them both to become pawns in the political games being played among the three great houses.
  • In the St. Freya manga, Otto possesses a VR simulation of Kallen's death which Kiana and Bronya accidentally discover. It's implied that Otto knew exactly where to strike the Honkai beast that killed Kallen because he ran this exact scenario countless times over the course of 500 years.
  • In Guns Girl Z, it's hinted that The AI handling Project Stigma identified Otto as a figure with the potential to advance humanity’s fight against the Honkai but concluded that he needed a powerful motivation. To achieve this, it orchestrated Kallen’s death and manipulated Otto by implanting harsh truths, pushing him to develop the revolutionary technologies that would one day help humanity overcome the Honkai. This is hinted to be the cause why Kallen died in Newborn and in Honkai Impact 3, and Otto's actions did pave the way for the main characters to defeat the Honkai once and for all.
  • In the event «Bon Voyage! Toward Blessing and wishes!” Theresa in stage 1-1 calls Otto grandpa and she calls Kallen grandma.
  • In the event «Bon Voyage! Toward Blessing and wishes!” Kallen blushes three times by some Otto's words.
  • In the event «Bon Voyage! Toward Blessing and wishes!” Otto and Kallen were in a romantic relationship.
