- Nagito – “Are you just going to lie about it [Kokichi's secret organization] after I pay you...? Or raise the price even higher after I make an offer?”
- Kokichi – “Wooow, you're absolutely correct! You know me so well, Nagito!”
- — Nagito is shown to be able to read through Kokichi's behavior in their Ultimate Talent Development Plan.
Debuting in different games and sagas, Nagito and Kokichi have never met in canon. However, they have one Friendship Event together in the non-canon bonus mode of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony - Ultimate Talent Development Plan.
In said event, Komaeda tells Oma that even with his talent, he had no luck in finding out any piece of information about the Ultimate Supreme Leader's secret organization. As a result, he claimed it's almost as if this organization doesn't exist, but he adds that he doesn't doubt Kokichi's talent. Oma responds by claiming that he was planning on giving him answers after he decided on a form of payment. However, Komaeda isn't interested, knowing that Kokichi would likely lie about his organization or raise the payment further after making an offer. The latter confirms Nagito's suspicions and points out how well he knows him.
The two share numerous similarities to each other. Both obsess over one half of their respective games' main theme, although Nagito obsesses over the typically positive side (hope) while Kokichi obsesses over the typically negative side (lies). Both are more logical than emotional, antagonize some of their classmates, and sometimes go into philosophical mumblings, resulting in the others distancing themselves. Their talents also contribute to them being outcasts, with some avoiding Komaeda because his luck could be dangerous to them and some avoiding Oma because of his ominous title as well as his status as the compulsive liar. Even certain of their poses are similar, such as these two.
Their similarities also include their roles in the game. Both act as The Rival to the respective protagonists, whom they also consider worthy rivals. Being intelligent and figuring out certain elements of the cases ahead of everyone else, both tend to steer the conversations during the Class Trials, with often resorting to casting suspicion on someone to clear their name. Both have also orchestrated the fifth case of their respective games, where both ended up being the victims. In doing so, both have also orchestrated a case with seemingly impossible to figure out victim and/or culprit, although there are differences in their methods and motives to do so, as Nagito operated within the game's rules to kill the other Remnants, whereas Kokichi aimed to break the game by creating a scenario where continuing it would be impossible.
The ship sailed as a result of the multiple similarities between Nagito and Kokichi. In fact, those common traits between the two led some fans to claim they're outright like the same character, ignoring the differences between them that exist as well. The ship was further fueled by their interaction in Ultimate Talent Development Plan.
Many fan fictions portray them bonding with each other as a result of being similar in many areas. Some also reference their interaction from the bonus mode, portraying Komaeda as more intrigued in the truth behind Oma's talent as a result of his interest in the Ultimates. Others will focus on the differences between them, such as Nagito being fine with the killing while Kokichi is seemingly fine with them but secretly despises them.
However, as a result of being a ship based on two characters being Foil to each other and only having one interaction in a non-canon bonus mode, it's a rare pair. While still incredibly popular for such a minor ship, its popularity is nowhere close to both characters' main ships, such as Komahina, Komanami and Komamiki for Nagito and Saiouma, Oumatsu and Oumeno for Kokichi Oma.
