Owling at the Moon is the femslash ship between Octavia and Loona from the Helluva Boss fandom.

Canon

For the longest time, Loona and Octavia never met each other, only being connected to each other through their dads being in a (rather complicated) relationship with each other. This changed one day when Octavia snuck into I.M.P.'s office to obtain her father's grimoire so she can watch a meteor shower on Earth on her own. Loona actually spots Octavia trying to sneak in, but deliberately chooses not to say anything (partly because of lingering anger from a discussion she had with her father earlier). It's only after Blitzo, Moxxie, and Millie find Octavia entering the portal to Earth that Loona finally reveals she knew about the intruder. After smelling that Octavia went to the mortal city of Los Angeles, Loona is forcibly brought along with the rest of I.M.P. and Stolas into searching the city for Octavia.

With Moxxie and Millie getting sidetracked by some street artists, and Stolas and her father getting caught due to the latter being mistaken for an actor, Loona is the only one of the group able to actually search for Octavia. While wandering around the city, she discovers that Octavia had been to a shop she just took a selfie of and posted about it on her social media. After seeing Octavia had posted more photos of her travels, Loona uses them to track her movements across the city. She continues to do so, especially when Octavia begins making new posts, but comes up empty when she actually arrives at the location. Eventually, with night beginning to fall, Loona reaches an observatory.

On the roof, Loona finally finds Octavia - incredibly depressed and crying. Octavia is surprised Loona (who's dropped her human disguse) found her only for the hellhound to inform her about the photos while also complimenting them. When Loona asks what's wrong, Octavia angrily says that she was a fool to go to Earth to see the meteor shower since the sky was too full of smog to see anything, while also angrily claiming that her father would rather argue with his soon-to-be ex-wife than uphold a promise he made to her. In response, Loona says that all fathers (referring to her own, as well) make mistakes all the time but they still care for their children. She also notes that Stolas is out in the city looking for Octavia, that he's trying and that should be enough - which Loona says with a smile. As Octavia processes what Loona says, the smog clear enough for the moon to begin shining through, while the hellhound asks if Octavia is ready to head home. Handing Loona the grimoire, Octavia agrees before hugging her - which Loona reciprocates. The two eventually find their fathers and reunite, with Loona being particularly happy at Octavia's renewed happiness.

Fanon

Owling at the Moon was initially a smaller pairing in the Helluva Boss fandom. The ship initially only had passing support due to only being tied to their fathers being a popular ship and that being their only uniting factor since they hadn't been onscreen together. With the two finally meeting each other in Seeing Stars, however, this ship has gotten a severe jolt in support. The common consensus of them bonding over their complicated relationships with their fathers turned out to be correct. As such, fans of the ship hope this newfound bond continues into future episodes.

While a small part of the fandom seems to ship the two girls romantically due to their similar interests and personalities, the majority of the series' fans avert it, largely due to Loona and Octavia's respective fathers having a (complicated) romance. A portion of people also say that Loona is ‘too old’ for Octavia, given their five year gap and the fact that Octavia is a teenager while Loona is a young adult. Because of that, most fans seem to be satisfied with the two having a sisterly dynamic, instead, stemming from the idea that when Blitzo and Stolas eventually form a stable relationship in the show, or even marry, the two girls will share a family.

The ship's name is a play on the phrase "Howling at the Moon", which stems from Octavia being an owl-like demon, and Loona being a wolf-like hellhound.

On AO3, Owling at the Moon is the third most written ship for Loona and the fourth most written for Octavia. There are currently 34 written works.
