Papa Geppetto is the family ship between Geppetto and Pinocchio from the Pinocchio and Once Upon A Time fandoms.
Canon[]
Pinocchio (1940)[]
Geppetto is a lonely old man living in his workshop, currently finishing his latest creation: a wooden boy. Though he had no children of his own, he loved to make children happy by building toys and cuckoo clocks for them. As he tested out the joints of the puppet by dancing with him, he had genuine fun, but as he went to bed, he muttered how much he wished the wooden boy could be a real boy. As he slept, the Blue Fairy entered his house, praising Geppetto's kindness and selflessness, deciding to grant his wish. After the Blue Fairy leaves, Geppetto awakens to a loud noise, only to see that all is well when he sees Pinocchio looking at him. It startles him to see Pinocchio talk and refer to him as "father". When he urges the boy for an explanation, Pinocchio tells him about the visit of the Blue Fairy. Though Geppetto is happy, Pinocchio explains that he isn't a real boy just yet, telling him that he has to prove himself worthy by behaving accordingly.
The next day, Geppetto tries to help Pinocchio by sending him off to school. He gives him an apple for his teacher and fully trusts him with knowing his way. But then Pinocchio stumbles across a duo of conmen, who are fascinated by the living puppet, telling him that he would make a great actor. Despite Pinocchio's conscience trying to lead him back to school, Pinocchio is tempted by the idea and abandons Geppetto's request. Once he crashes the performance of puppet player Stromboli, he latter sees quick riches with Pinocchio's lack of strings. When Pinocchio's act becomes a huge success, the boy thinks of telling his father about it, but Stromboli locks him up in a cage.
Meanwhile, Geppetto and his pets are waiting for Pinocchio deep into the night at the dinner table. As Geppetto figures that Pinocchio isn't coming by himself, he realizes that something must've happened. So he grabs the two animals and a lamp, wandering off into the night, crying Pinocchio's name.
Pinocchio manages to escape Stromboli's imprisonment, but is then caught by the conmen duo, who send him off to Pleasure Island, to be sold off into servitude. Pinocchio manages to escape that as well, but instead of having a warm welcome at home, he finds that Geppetto has gone missing. A seagull gives him a letter of his father, detailing that Geppetto had gone out to sea and had been swallowed by a whale named Monstro. Despite the warnings of his conscience, Pinocchio sets off to rescue his father.
Geppetto almost starves to death trapped in the whale, but uses a makeshift fishing rod to catch the fish the whale has swallowed. He then finds Pinocchio among the fish and the two of them reunite. Pinocchio gets the idea of making the whale sneeze by starting a fire inside of him and the small family gets shot out of the whale. That wasn't the end of it, as the whale is now furious at them, but Geppetto narrowly escapes, while Pinocchio gets smashed into a rock. He was washed up on shore, motionless and Geppetto mourns his son, carrying his lifeless body home to mourn him in safety. But then the Blue Fairy rewards Pinocchio for his selflessness in saving his father has proven him worthy, bringing him back to life by turning him into a real boy. The small family then celebrate together.

Lies of P[]
After Geppetto lost his son Carlo, he models the humanoid Pinocchio after him, in hopes of bringing Carlo back to life. By having P (Pinocchio's nickname) gather ergo (crystalized human souls) and key items he'll need for his goal. To help Pinocchio in his task and to ensure that his final puppet becomes human for the P-Organ heart that holds Carlo's life essence in P's chest, Geppetto doesn't have Pinocchio be chained by the grant covenant, giving him the freedom to lie, and used law zero of the covenant to make the city's puppets go on a murderous rampage. Killing many innocent people before Pinocchio awakens and is left unware of his father's crime, believing that the King of Puppets was the one who caused the Puppet Frenzy. Sophia helps Pinocchio to find Geppetto with the promise that he will answer the questions he has, and ends up killing a human that tried to attack his father creator for being the creator of puppets. Geppetto is shown to be happy to see his puppet and although he address the animatronic Pinocchio as "son" and acts like a father to him, Geppetto only saw Carlo as his son. While Pinocchio's face is a reminder of the child he lost. Instead of answering his questions, Geppetto gives Pinocchio orders.
Once Geppetto saw that P is becoming more human and is able to grow like one, he wasn't sure what to make of it. Each time Pinocchio lies, the nose on the portrait that Geppetto had commissioned of Carlo starts to grow, hinting that Carlo does in fact live on within Pinocchio, but Geppetto was unable to see this. Pinocchio has been given hits and warnings of his creator's true intentions, but doesn't put them all together until the very end. Along with Pinocchio showing signs of him truly being Carlos reborn, from inheriting Carlos's personality and uncovered parts of Carlos's thoughts and memories of Geppetto. Revealing that Geppetto was neglectful of Carlo and wasn't always the caring father he made himself out to be towards Pinocchio. When Pinocchio goes save Geppetto on the Isle of the Alchemists, Geppetto asks him if he was ever a good father to him. One of the truth and lies options even give Pinocchio the choice to either reveal Geppetto as the cause of the Puppet Frenzy or lie to protect him.
Once Geppetto has all that he needs to bring Carlo back, he asks Pinocchio to give him his heart, with the promise of him making Pinocchio a real boy. Should you to agree to give up Pinocchio's heart and have him lose his humanity for Geppetto's true son, he would go back on his promise after using a hug as a means to tear his heart right out of his chest. Leading to a darker version of Carol taking Pinocchio's place for the aftermath free play of this bad ending. That has Pinocchio's allies at Hotel Krat be killed and replaced with puppets to serve Carlo, as Geppetto aims to make a utopia of puppets that serve and watch over his son. That is how he alone wants Carlos to be like, rather than the young man who grew to resent his father. This ending also hints that Geppetto might have left Pinocchio for dead, after getting his actual son back. Should you refuse, Geppetto would have his Nameless Puppet attack Pinocchio. Before the Nameless Puppet could deliver the final blow that would destroy the heart Geppetto created for Carlo, he uses his own body to shield Pinocchio. The ending of this version can go two ways, Geppetto calling Pinocchio a useless puppet for failing in his assigned task, if Pinocchio wasn't able to reach full humanity at the end of the game. The "Rise of P" ending that does have Pinocchio reach his final stage, has he shed a tear for his dying father as he holds him. This will have Geppetto acknowledge him as his son and apologies before he dies. It is unclear if the tear was of Pinocchio crying for his creator, or a small part of Carlo morning his misguided father through his new identity and life as Pinocchio.
Fanon[]
Since almost all shipping for the Pinocchio story is platonic, Papa Geppetto is second to Wooden Cricket as the most popular platonic ship for the Disney movie. It has a few more fics for the Pinocchio stories as a whole.
Due to how Geppetto's character was presented in Lies of P, it has people having mixed feelings of the bond he has with his Pinocchio. From how it has Geppetto use P as a means to an end for getting his actual son back, while tossing his puppet son aside like he was nothing. Making people think that his kindness towards P was either an act, or him losing himself from how mush Pinocchio looks like Carlo. Many like to think that Carlo lives on within Pinocchio and that the two have become the same person, and that Geppetto realised this in the "Rise of P" ending.

Trivia[]
- Pinocchio is a regular character in the Shrek franchise, with Geppetto being occasionally seen with him. He seems to hate his son in this incarnation, however.
- The "fairy tale ending" option of Lies of P having the revived Carlo take the place of the animatronic Pinocchio protagonist, after Geppetto removes his puppet's heart to bring his son back to life, is a reference to a scene from Carlo Collodi's original novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio." After Pinocchio becomes a real boy he gains a human body so he can be more like his father, while his wooden puppet body is left lifeless in the cornor. Just as Geppetto had left P for dead after taking away his heart and humanity, so they could be placed in Carlo.
