“No, no. Amethyst, you're not the mistake, you're just the byproduct of a... big mistake. No, that's not-. I-I just never thought of this as you. None of this is your fault, you didn't build this place. I-I'm sorry, Amethyst... I hope you can forgive me. You're the one good thing that came out of this mess! I always thought you were proud of that.”
— Pearl to Amethyst.

Pearlmethyst is the non-binary ship between Pearl and Amethyst from the Steven Universe fandom.

Canon[]

Pearl and Amethyst have a rather tense relationship, as their personalities contrast with each other, as well as their ways of doing things; Pearl is clean and tidy while Amethyst is noisy and not afraid to get your hands dirty. Amethyst often teases Pearl, who often reproaches her in turn. Although they are of opposite personalities, they esteem each other both as teammates and as friends and take care of each other.

In the episode "Secret Team", it is shown that they get along only when they risk getting into trouble or during fights against other opponents. Amethyst had thought that Perla perceived her as a "mistake", because of her origins in kindergarten. She had since rejected the idea when Pearl assured her: "You were the only good thing that came out of this mess. I always thought I was proud of it". In the episode "Cry for Help", Pearl and Garnet merge to form Sardonyx, as opposed to Amethyst and Garnet merging to form Sugilite, causing Amethyst to complain and Pearl to be jealous. However, when Steven and Amethyst learned that Pearl was repairing the Communication Hub just to create Sardonice, Amethyst was not angry or upset once she discovered Pearl's motivation to do so. When the truth is revealed to Garnet, Amethyst defends Pearl because she knew why she did it.

In the episode "Keystone Motel", when Steven, Garnet and Greg return from their journey, Amethyst can be briefly seen trying to console a very distraught Pearl, while Garnet is ignoring because of Pearl's irresponsible actions.

In the events of "Return to the Barn", Amethyst has shown great respect for Perla after her extraordinary performance. It is also shown that Amethyst was rather stunned by Perla's display of physical ability and willpower, showing a much more compassionate side of the relationship between the two.

In the events of "Know Your Fusion", Pearl embraces Amethyst and tells her that she is stunned by what Quartz Fumé has been able to do, and lets Amethyst know how much good influence she had on Steven, while Amethyst blushes and admits that it was really the opposite. In "The Last Out of Beach City", Barbara plays cards with her and Vidalia. In the same episode, Amethyst compliments Pearl for how hardcore and cool she is, but also shows concern for Pearl in fear that she may be rejected by the mysterious woman. According to Guide to the Crystal Gems, Opal is a balanced fusion, showing how the personalities of Amethyst and Pearl balance in a fusion so peaceful that it is sometimes easy to forget them. However, this balance is tiring to maintain. If Pearl and Amethyst begin to fall into their usual dissonance or encounter a problem otherwise, they can separate almost immediately. Opal's first appearance takes place in the episode "Giant Woman", and the episode focuses more on the relationship between Amethyst and Pearl, and although they are opposite in personality and quarrel very often, they have been able to successfully carry out the merger becoming Opal and saving Steven from danger. It seems that their relationship has greatly improved starting from "Log Date 7 15 2", since Pearl and Amethyst have to put their heads on the drill. Amethyst transforms into Purple Puma to lift the drill, but Pearl says they should be more careful. The two merge into Opal who places her head on the drill. Opal's appearance briefly shocks Peridot, however, understands that Opal is present for a reason.

Fanon[]

Pearlmethyst is one of the first ships to appear in Steven Universe, and has been very popular since the beginning of the series, especially its popularity stems from the episode "Giant Woman", where it focused more on the relationship between Pearl and Amethyst. Over time the popularity has slightly plummeted in favor of its rival ships Bispearl, Pearlrose, MysteryPearl by Pearl part and Amedot by Amethyst part, although it is still popular in its own right.

On AO3, Pearlmethyst is the second most written ship for Pearl and the most written for Amethyst, having more than 900 works in the Amethyst/Pearl tag, as well as ranking as the 5th most popular ship in the fandom.
