Canon[]
A Quality of Mercy[]
This is episode mostly takes place in an alternate reality where Pike was never injured and Jim never took over the Enterprise.
Uhura tells Pike that they're getting a message from the Farragut, and Pike asks who the Captain is. Uhura says it's James Kirk and Pike is surprised that it's Sam's brother. He tells Uhura to put it on screen and Jim answers offering assistance. Pike says it's good to see him and Kirk says that they got the distress signal. He asks if they know who did this and Pike says that they are trying to determine that.
Kirk knocks on Pike's door, who tells him to enter. Kirk asks if he's interrupting something and Pike says that he was just talking to himself. He offers Kirk a drink, which Kirk accepts. Pike says that he can't really explain it, but he feels like he was supposed to meet Kirk and Kirk feels the same. He says that he came by to see how Pike was and is sorry for how things went down, since he tried for something better. Pike says that he did and lost, the two sharing a toast. Kirk asks if Pike ever thinks that you can't always avoid a fight, and says that if they'd chased the Romulan ship things might have gone down differently. Pike says that Kirk is a good captain, and that the Enterprise would be lucky to have him. Kirk asks if Pike is thinking of retiring and Pike laughs, saying not yet. He invites Kirk to have a seat and tell him about himself and Kirk starts to talk about his life.

Pirk has a decent following within the Star Trek fandom, specifically within the AOS fandom. Although it is slightly controversial within the fandom, as many see Pike more as a father figure to Kirk rather than someone to ship him with. The ship still remains a staple of the fandom though. As there are a decent amount of fans who started shipping the two with Kirk appearance in SNW episodes. On AO3, Pirk is the third most written ship for Pike and the ninth most written for Kirk. There are currently 250+ written works.
