PlaidViolet is the femslash ship between Patty Swanson and Violet Gray from the Peanuts fandom.
Canon[]
Patty Swanson and Violet Gray are two of the earliest female characters introduced in Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip, with Patty debuting on October 2, 1950 (in the very first strip), and Violet joining on February 7, 1951. When Violet moved to town, she and Patty quickly became friends. In the early years of the strip, the two are frequently depicted as close friends and a duo, often seen together in social settings or engaging in activities like antagonizing Charlie Brown, although in the early days, Violet and Patty's interactions with Charlie Brown varied; sometimes they talked about how much they liked him, while other times they were mean-spirited. Over time, however, their behavior evolved, and they became known for their teasing and exclusionary actions, particularly towards Charlie Brown. They would also be seen walking about with each other, talking, and making mud pies.
Their dynamic is characterized by their shared snobbish personalities and a tendency to assert their superiority, although Violet is generally the more dominant of the two (therefore Patty's role-in her later appearances-was reduced to that of a yes-girl). In general, however, Patty seemed to be less malicious than Violet (and Lucy Van Pelt).
Violet and Patty often use social exclusion as a tactic, occasionally taking it to the point of isolating Charlie Brown and emphasizing his outsider status. This behavior mirrors the common "in crowd" dynamics, where they assert their social dominance over peers outside their clique. For instance, in a February 3, 1952, strip, they lure Charlie Brown into joining their "secret club" only to reject him immediately after he agrees. Similarly, in an early Sunday strip, they enlist Charlie Brown and Shermy to build a clubhouse, then exclude them by posting a "No Boys Allowed" sign once it’s complete. On several occasions, especially in the early years of the strip, the two did their best to make Charlie Brown understand that they were throwing a party to which he was not invited.
Their partnership was a key feature of Peanuts in its initial phase, with Schulz often drawing them side by side to highlight their camaraderie. However, as the comic evolved through the 1960s, new characters like Lucy Van Pelt and Peppermint Patty took center stage, pushing Patty and Violet into smaller roles. While both of the girls' appearances dwindled after the 1960s-70s, their early prominence cemented them as a notable pair.
Canonically, there is no romantic relationship between them; their interactions remain platonic, often revolving around their friendship and occasional mean-spirited antics. Despite this, not all their interactions were friendly, as on the 4th of April 1953, Patty calls Violet a 'tattletale' and storms off.
Fanon[]
In the Peanuts community, PlaidViolet has emerged as a niche but liked femslash pairing. The fans interpret their close friendship and synchronized behavior as a foundation for a deeper bond, imagining scenarios where their confident personalities complement each other romantically.
Common themes in PlaidViolet fanworks In fanworks tend to lean into their dynamic as the “mean girls” in Peanuts, with a twist of softness reserved for each other. Popular scenarios include Patty braiding Violet’s hair during a quiet moment or Violet defending Patty from Lucy’s bossiness. The ship’s popularity, while not as widespread as pairings like Schrucy or Sallinus, has a dedicated following.
